An estimated 100 protesters littered the grounds surrounding the Thomas Jefferson statue at the University of Virginia (UVA) Tuesday night to show strength behind a list of demands the Black Student Alliance gave to the university in August in response to the now infamous “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville. If you feel like your First Amendment rights as an American are being trampled on, it might be because a staggering number of people don’t know what they are. According to a recent survey by the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania, a mind-boggling 37 percent of respondents either didn’t know or couldn’t name any of the five First Amendment rights guaranteed to all Americans by the Constitution: speech, religion, press, assembly and petition. The University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign’s Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) chapter has gone radical on Facebook calling for “violent resistance, whether black bloc or full-scale armed conflict” in its fight against fascism, White Supremacy and Zionism. SJP’s latest event: “Smashing Fascism: Radical Resistance Against White Supremacy,” claimed “there is no room for fascists, white supremacists, or Zionists” at the Illinois university. MORGANTOWN — West Virginia University has named two new varieties of tomatoes created by school researchers to commemorate the sesquicentennial of the Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design. U.S. Rep. Anthony Brown (D-Md.) announced he will introduce a bill to limit free speech or “hate speech” at universities and colleges and force the schools to report hate crimes to local law enforcement. His logic behind the bill is to require universities to demonstrate they have programs in place that will define for students “what is acceptable speech and what is not acceptable speech.” Brown said funding will be set aside in a grant for institutions unable to secure the resources to create the programs.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico's Education Department is encouraging people who might be affected by the termination of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program to apply for jobs as English teachers in Mexico. The United States is terminating the program, which temporarily protects people brought to the U.S. illegally as children, or whose parents overstayed their visas. WILLIMANTIC -- Dozens of Eastern Connecticut State University students gathered on campus Tuesday to rally against President Trump’s announcement to roll back the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrives, or DACA. The Superintendent of Cherokee Schools District in Georgia has apologized after a teacher told students they were banned from wearing Trump T-shirts. Days after Hurricane Harvey hit, Quartz published a fiery article under the title, "Houston’s flooding shows what happens when you ignore science and let developers run rampant." This piece and others like it are pushing a false narrative about Houston's planning.
