People see the strangest things in clouds and burnt toast, but this latest sighting can't be topped -- a face on a testicular tumor. Canadian doctors at Queen's University were shocked when they found the image in an ultrasound from December 2009, the Toronto Star reported. “It was very ghoulish, like a man screaming in pain. His mouth was open and it looked like one eye was gouged out,” said Dr. Naji Touma, a professor at Queen’s University Medical School and urologist at Kingston General Hospital. The image was sent to the journal Urology and recently published under the tongue-in-cheek...

IF YOUR face and name are anywhere on the web, you may be recognised whenever you walk the streets—not just by cops but by any geek with a computer. That seems to be the conclusion from some new research on the limits of privacy. For suspected miscreants, and people chasing them, face-recognition technology is old hat. Brazil, preparing for the soccer World Cup in 2014, is already trying out pairs of glasses with mini-cameras attached; policemen wearing them could snap images of faces, easy to compare with databases of criminals. More authoritarian states love such methods: photos are taken at...

Dallas Wiens, 26, of Texas, who had previously come to terms with a vastly deformative injury which virtually erased his face, expressed gratitude to the family of his new face's donor and doctors remarked on his transformation as he made his first public appearance after becoming the first recipient of a full facial transplant in the United States. Most of Wiens' face was burned off during an electrical accident in 2008 in Fort Worth. He was working on a cherry picker, finishing a painting job at Ridglea Baptist Church, when the machine hit a power line. He awoke from a...

Study: Botox Cuts Ability To Read OthersPublished on April 23, 2011 by Staff Reporter LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (USA) OfficialWire News Bureau Botox, used to reduce facial wrinkles, may also reduce its users' ability to read other people's emotions, U.S. researchers say. **SNIP** Botox paralyzes facial muscles, and Neal suggested having a less expressive face may make someone less able to read other faces. Neal and his colleague worked with two groups of subjects. One tested 31 women who had been treated with either Botox or Restylane, a skin filler, and the other a somewhat larger group of women and men...

RUSH: Remember, we had the audio yesterday, these teachers leading students in an anti-Walker chant, "Hey, hey! Ho, ho! Scott Walker's gotta go!" Can we get rid of the myth once and for all that school teachers, anymore, are these average, ordinary (as Obama wants to say), next-door neighbors who are just doing everything they can to further the educational experience of your children? That's not who they are. They are left-wing activists, active members of unions who are oriented first by a political agenda, second by their own well-being, and your kids come last. Can we just get that...

Cairo - Egypt's new military rulers faced their first unwelcome diplomatic exposure on Wednesday as Israel reported that two Iranian warships were approaching the Suez Canal to pass through for the first time since 1979. (Snip) "For warships to pass through the canal, approval from the ministry of defense and the ministry of foreign affairs is needed and this applies to all warships owned by any country," a Canal official told Reuters. No notice had been given so far. Neil Partrick, an independent UK-based Middle East expert, said he presumed Iran decided on the ships' mission before Egypt was engulfed

There is no proof yet that Christianne Amanpour is a child molester. Let that sink in for a second. Outrageous, right? Especially when simply said out of the blue like that. Yet that is how the media is treating the insanity of the left-wing progressive charge that conservatives, Sarah Palin and the Tea Party are somehow responsible for the actions of a man who had been obsessed with his target since 2007, more than two years before the Tea Party was in existence. Amanpour, on her low-rated “This Week” program on ABC, said the following in her report of the...

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- In this bloody free-for-all of a recession, Americans in their 50s are really taking it hard on the chin. Their 401(k)s have been cut down to 201(k)s. Their pensions have been frozen, or worse. Their home equity has evaporated just as their kids' college bills come due. And while younger workers may have been hit harder by unemployment, 50-something Americans who get laid off are stuck in jobless limbo longer than any other age group.

WILMINGTON, Del. -- Just two days after her upset of Rep. Mike Castle (R-Del.) in the state's Republican Senate primary, Tea Party-backed Christine O'Donnell shared a stage with New Castle County Executive Chris Coons (D) in their first meeting of the general election contest. Thanks to the format of the yearly candidate forum sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Delaware, the stage was shared by eight candidates, but the main attraction was the impending battle between O'Donnell and Coons. The result was a standing-room-only crowd in a packed auditorium. The forum was an early test for O'Donnell, who despite having...

Congressional Democrats and the White House will continue their attempts to enact policies they believe will boost the economy—and which are also aimed at persuading voters they are working to make things better. ...And while the economic situation remained dire when President Barack Obama took office in January 2009, most Democrats assumed that the economy would rebound by the time they stood for office this year. A series of disappointing economic reports has made clear that won't be the case. The most recent one came Friday, when the government reported that the economy grew at a much slower pace in...

SYDNEY, Aug. 26 (UPI) -- A military prosecutor says she may pursue charges against several Australian troops in a raid in Afghanistan last year in which five children died. Brig. Lyn McDade, the director of military prosecutions, says she is considering the unprecedented step of charging several Defense Force commandos, a move that has infuriated senior officers, The Sydney Morning Herald reported Thursday. Australia's Chief of Army Lt. Gen. Ken Gillespie and other commanders have expressed concern in writing, the newspaper said. Of about 30 personnel involved in the raid, only a few appear likely to face court martial, including...

A new image just released by NASA confirms what the space agency has said all along: That's no face on Mars. It's just a rocky mesa. In 1976, NASA's Viking space craft first captured the stunning picture of the area, showing what clearly looked like a face on the surface of Mars. Conspiracy theorists went bonkers, describing the image as clear proof both that Martians existed and that NASA and the government were aware of their existence. The new image comes from the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment camera (HiRISE) on board the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, a multipurpose satellite...

Europe Could Face Hundreds Of Iranian Missiles - Gates By REUTERS June 17, 2010 WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. intelligence showing Iran likely would have the capability to attack Europe with "scores or even hundreds" of missiles factored into the Obama administration's decision to overhaul missile defenses, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said on Thursday. Citing the growing Iranian missile threat, the United States announced plans last September to integrate sea- and land-based missile defenses in and around its NATO allies in Europe, referred to as the "phased adaptive approach." "One of the elements of the intelligence that contributed to the decision...

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama's Democratic allies in the Senate promise to cut the deficit by almost two-thirds over the next five years, but their budget plan could threaten about 30 million people with tax increases averaging $3,700 in 2012 and after because of the alternative minimum tax. The alternative is tax increases elsewhere in the revenue code averaging up to $100 billion a year after 2011 to continue alternative minimum tax relief and also curb taxes on people inheriting large estates.

Citizenship and Immigration Minister Jason Kenney is free to disagree with the rights enjoyed by homosexuals, but he is not entitled to censor those legal protections in a document that purports to tell the story of Canada. A new citizenship study guide was issued last year to give immigrants a better and more complete understanding of Canada, including its strong attachment to collective and individual rights. It offered a more truthful picture of our history, warts and all, and noted that Canadians have both rights and responsibilities. The goal, in part, was to ensure that newcomers understood the country they...

DNA analysis of human hair preserved in Greenland's permafrost has given clues as to what the owner looked like. A study, published in the journal Nature, says the individual's genome is the oldest to have been sequenced from a modern human. The researchers say the man, who lived 4,000 years ago, had brown eyes and thick dark hair, although he would have been prone to baldness. They say the genome also shows that his ancestors migrated from Siberia. The man has been named Inuk, which means "human" in the Greenlandic language.

LONDON (AP) - Oxford, Cambridge and other British universities said Tuesday that the government's plan to cut hundreds of millions of pounds (dollars) from their funding would put their world-class reputations in jeopardy. Unlike most elite institutions in the United States, Britain's top schools rely almost exclusively on taxpayers keeping them going. But strapped for cash, the government has slashed its higher education budget by 600 million pounds (nearly $1 billion) over the next three years—a figure British media say comes to a 12 percent reduction when combined with other cuts.

Countries from Italy to Sweden are debating the right of women to wear the niqab. Canada is the latest country to enter the fray, with the Muslim Canadian Congress desiring to ban it. Is such a ban possible in the U.S., where its prevalence is evident in certain urban centers, like Philadelphia? Muslim women's wearing of niqab, the veil covering everything but the eyes, and, by extension, the face-concealing mesh that is combined with a long garment to form the burqa in South Asia, has been introduced into the West as a purported religious obligation, and therefore, is put forward...

After Attack GRAPHIC IMAGE! NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A Connecticut woman who was attacked by a 200-pound chimpanzee says she repeatedly warned the animal's owner that the primate was dangerous and could hurt someone. In a telephone interview Wednesday with The Associated Press, Charla Nash said she saw the chimpanzee throw large objects around his cage, flash his teeth and pound the bars so violently his hands would bleed and the cage had to be rewelded. Nash, who appeared on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" Wednesday, said she told the owner, Sandra Herold, eight or 10 times he was dangerous.

Anger Issues: Obama's STFU FaceBy Owen Thomas, 7:00 PM on Fri Jan 23 2009 During the campaign, Barack Obama presented himself as the sunny heir to Ronald Reagan's style of optimistic Americana. During the primary, he held back lest he seem unchivalrous to Hillary Clinton. When John McCain started ranting in the debates, Obama restrained himself lest he be perceived as being mean to an...

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Sen. John McCain hasn't campaigned in North Carolina since the primary election. But some people used Sen. No official date has been set for McCain to visit the Tar Heel State, but he did recently increase the number of paid campaign staff in North Carolina from about 20 to about 30. That's an effort to defend a state that hasn't...

Why Face Symmetry Is Sexy Across Cultures And SpeciesHigh and low symmetry composite faces for macaques, Hadza, and Europeans. All images are normalised on inter-pupillary distance to control relative image size, have been made perfectly symmetric, and each high/low pair possesses the average colour information of both. Perceptual differences are then dependent on shape differences between high and low symmetry faces that are independent of symmetry. (Credit: Image courtesy of Public Library of Science) ScienceDaily (May 8, 2008) — In humans, faces are an important source of social information. One property of faces that is rapidly noticed is attractiveness. Research...

BOSTON, January 22, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Attorneys with the Alliance Defense Fund filed a lawsuit in federal court Friday against a new Massachusetts law that creates a 35-foot "buffer" zone around abortion clinics. "Pro-life advocates shouldn't be penalized for expressing their beliefs," said ADF-allied attorney and lead counsel Michael DePrimo. "The buffer law is breathtaking in its scope.
