Gilberto Escaramilla was fired in August and arrested after authorities obtained a search warrant and found packages of the Tex-Mex food in his refrigerator. Investigators subsequently checked vendor invoices and determined he would intercept county-funded food deliveries and deliver them to his own customers. The scheme imploded when he missed work one day in August for a medical appointment and a delivery driver showed up with 800 pounds of fajitas, but officials said the juvenile department didn't serve fajitas.

A woman informed the driver that the juvenile department didn't serve the Tex-Mex food - but the driver said he'd been delivering it for nine years, Cameron County District Attorney Luis V. San Francisco police commissioners cleared a police captain of misconduct charges related to his alleged interference with a police investigation of off-duty officers accused in the beating of two men on the street in 2002. The so-called "fajita-gate" scandal grew out of an early morning incident outside a Union Street bar on Nov. 20, 2002, between three officers and two men, one of whom allegedly refused to hand over a bag of steak fajitas to the officers. The men said they were punched and kicked, and one was reportedly hit with a bottle. The disciplinary charges, filed by the city's...

What are FReepers fixing to eat during these hot August days? I try to have something substantial without heating up the kitchen. We have only a charcoal grill and concluded a few weeks back that it's too much work to use very often -- no doubt those w/ gas grills are using them regularly as they aren't as much trouble.
