JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - After a long, expensive and sometimes bruising, Jacksonville voters elected a new mayor on Tuesday. When the first early votes and absentee votes were reported just after 7 p.m., Republican Lenny Curry had a 1 percent lead over incumbent Mayor Alvin Brown. Two hours later, with 98 percent of the 200,000 votes counted, that lead was only slightly larger, but enough to declare victory. After thanking his family, his volunteers, his donors and the Republican Party of Florida, Curry turned to the future.

Most members of Congress make $174,000 a year. Two senior House Democrats say lawmakers deserve a raise. Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) told reporters on Tuesday that he’s concerned that static congressional salaries — the pay level has remained the same since 2009 — will dissuade all but the uber-wealthy from serving in Congress. “This will be the seventh year in a row that we have not done a cost-of-living adjustment….I think it was appropriate at the time of the recession,” Hoyer said. “But to continue that on, we will dictate that the only people who can serve are the...

All 20 Republican lawmakers who voted against an amendment that prevents illegals from enlisting in the U.S. military refused to answer questions from Breitbart News regarding the expedited citizenship most illegals would have been eligible for once they joined the armed forces. They also each refused to answer whether they agree with House Minority Leader Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) calling their Republican colleagues who voted for the amendment “xenophobic” and “un-American.” That means that for now, the 20 Republicans who defected and joined Democrats in opposing the amendment are allowing Pelosi’s comments to remain unchallenged. ... As the 2016 presidential field slowly takes shape, the race — even with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) announcing his candidacy — centers on former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former Gov. Jeb Bush (R-Fla.). While neither has officially declared, both are working feverishly behind the scenes, building an infrastructure; testing policy platforms; and preparing for a grueling campaign season. By many outward appearances, Bush has moved more aggressively toward an announcement with the formation of the Right to Rise PAC and a bevy of policy speeches. Yet, given the potentially crowded field of Republican candidates, including current and former...

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) said Saturday that former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) would make a poor president for American women should he ever enter the White House. “He was a terrible governor for Florida women,” Wasserman Schultz tweeted. “Would be a disaster for women across the country.” Wasserman Schultz, who is also the Democratic National Committee (DNC) chairwoman, was responding to an article she encountered online. [Snip] “And at the end of the day, while Jeb’s right-wing rhetoric might make him stand out from his family, in 2016’s ultra-conservative GOP field, Jeb’s positons will just make him blend...

Rubio this is due to the 2014 border crisis and "unilateral actions the president took in his executive orders." "The problem is the votes aren't there in the House," Rubio said Sunday. "And as you know, for example, the Majority Leader of the House partially lost his election on the perception...

In a sign of Jeb Bush’s broad Hispanic outreach, his intensely private wife, Columba Bush, slowly started to raise her profile Friday by opening her own Twitter and Instagram accounts. Columba Bush, using the handle @ColumbaBush, plans to reach out in English and Spanish to various segments of the nation’s Latino community, which has one of the highest rates of social-media use in the nation. -snip- “This is a really important first step. It’s beyond dispute that Hispanic voters are more and more important in each election, and we need to capture at least 40 percent of that vote,” said...
