A group-wide IT system failure at Lufthansa (LHAG.DE) stranded thousands of passengers on Wednesday, which the German airline blamed on underground engineering works at a railway station in Frankfurt cutting several fibre optic cables. Repairs would take until Wednesday afternoon according to Lufthansa, citing information it had received from Deutsche Telekom (DTEGn.DE) . It expects flight operations to stabilise by early evening. Photos and videos from several German airports showed thousands of passengers waiting to be checked in.

Delta Air Lines Inc. has grounded all flights worldwide as a computer glitch is leaving passengers unable to check in. The second-biggest U.S. airline DAL, -1.78% said via Twitter that “all flights are grounded due to a system outage,” prompting long delays at airports around the world.

Officials reported big delays Saturday at New York and Washington airports because of an air traffic control issue. Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport reported that a computer outage was limiting flight arrivals and departures there as well as Washington's Reagan National Airport and Dulles International Airport. The problem also affected flights leaving New York’s LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy airports, according to FlightAware’s online tracker. A buddy of mine works at AA headquarters and he says that they are freaking out there over a outage in the reservation system. He says that they are grounding all flights globally. They can't figure out what's wrong and suspect it may be cyber terrorism.
