This may be the beginning of the end for the beloved Chiquita Banana sticker. Brazilian advertising agency, AGE Isobar, has developed a way to grow fruit embossed with company logos. The agency sealed tropical fruits in plastic molds that, if done correctly, would produce fruit bearing their clients' logo. In an AGE Isobar video, set to the tune of "Old McDonald Had a Farm," the agency walks the viewer through the process of growing, harvesting and displaying the branded fruits. A tour through a Brazilian orchard quickly turns from rustic to creepy and futuristic as a gardener displays baby guavas...

Devastating fungus has already stripped shrubbery in Europe and New Zealand. Shrubs may be trembling by doorsteps across North America as an aggressive fungus disease of boxwood invades the continent. Boxwood blight, caused by a Cylindrocladium fungus, was unknown to science before 2000 but has now spread through Europe and New Zealand. In October, U.S. authorities confirmed that the blight had jumped continents, with infections confirmed in North Carolina and Connecticut. By mid-January, with growers and pathologists on alert, the fungus had turned up in at least five more states — Virginia, Maryland, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Oregon — and...

Scientists are reporting the first evidence that consumption of a healthful antioxidant substance in apples extends the average lifespan of test animals, and does so by 10 percent. The new results, obtained with fruit flies -- stand-ins for humans in hundreds of research projects each year -- bolster similar findings on apple antioxidants in other animal tests. The study appears in ACS's of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. Zhen-Yu Chen and colleagues note that damaging substances generated in the body, termed free radicals, cause undesirable changes believed to be involved in the aging process and some diseases. Substances known as antioxidants...

Rocketing prices of fruit juice in commodity markets could soon make apple and orange juice an unaffordable "luxury," a trade publication says. The Grocer magazine says a series of bad harvests from Florida to China, combined with increased demand from Asian countries, has pushed the price of orange and apple juices up on the world market, Britain's Daily Telegraph reported Friday. Industry experts say prices could increase by as much as 80 per cent for orange juice and 60 per cent for apple juice in 2011, the newspaper said. In the past year, the price of a one-quart carton of...

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.(Psalm 1:1-3)In the first Psalm, God reveals the marks of the truly blessed man. His blessedness comes not from outward...

Mr. Spillane, I have to admit that I'm puzzled by one of your recent columns accusing me of a “cheap shot” on Barney Frank. You said: “So today, Bielat is out with a press release announcing that Barney Frank 'cooked the books' for House Financial Services Committee member Maxine Waters but he offers no fair-minded evidence that that was the case.” I know you're an intelligent man, and even the smartest of us make mistakes. So let's go look again at the evidence, shall we? Last week, The Washington Post broke the story that OneUnited Bank received special treatment from...

An analysis by Mount Sinai researchers of over eight years of dietary data from more than 400,000 people has found that the relationship between high consumption of fruits and vegetables and a reduced risk of cancer is not as strong as commonly thought. The study is published online April 6, 2010 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. It is widely believed that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables can reduce the risk of cancer. In 1990, the World Health Organization recommended eating five servings of fruits and vegetables a day to prevent cancer and other diseases. However,...

After Anti-Gay Cartoon, How Will Notre Dame Respond to Outcry? Posted: 02/16/2010 SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Notre Dame's student newspaper made national headlines when it printed an anti-gay comic strip on Jan. 13. The backlash was vocal, intense and deserved -- the comic depicted one character asking another how to turn a "fruit" into a "vegetable." The response: "a baseball bat." On campus, the response has also been adamant -- in support of the LGBT members of Notre Dame's student body, faculty and staff. And as a result of the incident, a group of students and faculty...

NORTH ROSE – A Wolcott fruit grower is accusing the U.S. Border Patrol of racially profiling four of his workers who were stopped on Route 414 Aug. 17 as they were returning to his farm from a trip to purchase clothing. The men were all detained and taken for processing; Border Patrol Officer E. Rodriguez, who was in charge of the scene, told fruit grower Brian Doyle the men volunteered they were in the U.S. illegally. Doyle said Rodriguez then accused him of being a “federal criminal” because he employed the men. He said Rodriguez continually referred to the men...

Bret DeLone winced, wobbled and occasionally whined on Monday as he gamely walked nearly a mile in a pair of high-heeled shoes as a protest of rape, sexual assault and violence. "I've got a blister on each foot," the Camp Hill resident said, happily slipping out of black high-heeled sling-back open-toe pumps and donning his sneakers. "These shoes didn't fit very well. But I received more than a few compliments on my legs, so I can't complain. It was all for a good cause." DeLone and about 40 other men wearing women's shoes strolled down Market Street in Camp Hill...

So there are a lot of environmental wackos, organic food junkies, hippies, libtards, the sportos, the motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, waistoids, dweebies, and dickheads that think genetically modified food is evil. But what they don't realize is, this practise has gone on for thousands of years through grafting, selective breeding, etc. No "organic" food they eat today is exactly the same as it was 1000 years ago. Plus, when you look at amazing foods like those listed below, you have to admit there is some use to genetic modification. Graisins (Image via Elanso) The graisin (or giant raisin) is a...

Somewhere on an old Nike missile site in an undisclosed Chicago location, a tiny tropical-looking paw-paw tree is rising mysteriously out of the scrubby soil. Credit its emergence to John Vukmirovich, the Johnny Appleseed of the pawpaw world – a self-proclaimed member of the “pawpaw conspiracy” (a type of pawpaw liberation front, if you will), a surreptitious sower extraordinaire of this country’s largest native fruit. Never heard of it? That may change. Earlier this month Ohio declared the oval, green produce its “official state native fruit.” And proponents of local food, who eschew imported fruit, regularly declare the environmental and...
