Sometimes the problem is that votes were miscounted. That's what happened, officials say, with precinct-by-precinct results posted on the Orange County elections office Web site showing that Democrat John Kerry beat Republican President Bush by 9,227 votes in Orange. That was off by 8,400 votes. U.S. space agency scientists received about 20 minutes of communications from their Mars rover spacecraft Spirit Friday, as they tried to diagnose the problem causing its breakdown. They gave no details, but said it responded properly to a command from earth and that they hope to get enough more information from it to restore its scientific functions. Since Wednesday, Spirit has responded to transmissions from earth, but has sent no new data about Mars.
