Michael Schumacher will make a shock return to Formula 1 to replace injured Ferrari driver Felipe Massa. The seven-time world champion retired at the end of 2006 but will drive at the European Grand Prix on 23 August. Ferrari said the 40-year-old will stand in for as long as Massa is sidelined with the serious injuries he sustained in the Hungarian Grand Prix last week.

Felipe Massa's Formula One career appears to be hanging in the balance following confirmation he has suffered some damage to his left eye. Massa is currently in intensive care at the AEK military hospital in Budapest after suffering a skull fracture following a freak accident on Saturday during qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix. Although the 28-year-old, still in a medically-induced coma, has shown signs of improvement after undergoing emergency surgery, it has now emerged Massa may have sustained eye problems. If that is the case, and the Brazilian is unable to see properly in the future, it will mean...

Lewis Hamilton clocked the quickest lap of the day during the second practice session for the Hungarian Grand Prix. McLaren's world champion left it late with a lap 0.047 seconds faster than team-mate Heikki Kovalainen, who had topped the morning timesheets. A low-key day for Brawn's Jenson Button ended with the championship leader posting the 13th fastest time. Red Bull's championship-chasing duo Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel were fourth and sixth fastest respectively.

Brazilian Formula One driver Felipe Massa was fighting for his life tonight following a crash during a qualifying session that knocked him unconscious. Massa was airlifted to hospital where surgeons operated on him to treat a fracture to his skull. The Ferrari driver ran over a piece of debris, thought to be a spring, on the track during the qualification session for the Hungarian F1 Grand Prix in Mogyorod near Budapest, Hungary.

LOS ANGELES – It could crash through burning buildings, make a fool of any number of small-town Southern sheriffs, help save the world from giant robots, even take criminals off to jail while engaging in witty repartee with its driver. In the end, about the only thing a Pontiac automobile couldn't do anymore was persuade enough people to keep buying it. So General Motors announced this past week that it is killing off the Pontiac brand, maker of muscular, noisy, gas-guzzling V-8-powered vehicles immortalized in song and movies for the way they seemed to shout to every other car on...

When Kimi Raikkonen, racing for Ferrari, won the 2007 Formula One world championship on Sunday, it definitely had the feeling of karma finally coming back around for him — although it took a while to develop. After qualifying on Saturday, Raikkonen sat third, behind Felipe Massa and Lewis Hamilton, who qualified first and second. Fernando Alonso was fourth. At that point, it would’ve been tough to believe in a Raikkonen title. Then Hamilton made a big mistake. Fighting Alonso for position through the fourth corner, he braked late and ran wide, falling behind and tracking over the...

McLaren achieved the first part of their plan for the weekend by taking the two top qualifying slots for the Italian Grand Prix at Monza on Saturday. Fernando Alonso held a small but crucial advantage over team mate Lewis Hamilton throughout the three sessions, and took the pole with a best lap of 1m 21.997s, having earlier set the fastest lap thus far this weekend of 1m 21.356s in the second.
