Russell Steen, a 48-year-old sales and delivery man for Taylor Printing, stood with his kids in the front yard of his house in Pratt, Kansas (pop. 6,500) last Friday night. “We were watching the lightning about 9:30, quarter to ten,” he told me. “It was one of those Kansas lightning storms that you tell people in L.A. about and they just don’t believe you. The whole sky was filled with it. It was amazing.” Steen doesn’t have cable. He doesn’t even have broadcast TV. Maybe he doesn’t need it. “I mean, that storm was something to see.” Eventually, he went...

Also the AG of Kansas seemed to have backtracked on earlier statements that they didnt have enough for the cleanup and reconstruction. Now the story is they meant for future disasters they would be strained.

GREENSBURG, Kan. Four Fort Riley soldiers were arrested for looting from a store in Greensburg. Major General Tod Bunting, the state's adjutant general, said the soldiers came to Greensburg to help on their own, and were not part of any official detachment. He was not sure what store they went into, but it was one of the few buildings still standing after Friday night's storm. Bunting also did not know exactly what the soldiers...

They photographed generals and presidents. They also shot street scenes of ordinary Koreans doing their laundry and getting haircuts. It was 1953 and Roy Behrens and Dom Emanuele were serving as photographers at the tail end of the Korean War. "We photographed everything you can imagine," says Behrens, 74, who now lives in Tucson.
