WASHINGTON -- The members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus will meet next week with Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to discuss enforcement of Alabama's immigration law, according to Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill. Gutierrez, a leading critic on Capitol Hill of states that try to police immigration themselves, said he wants the federal government's top immigration officials to emphasize that they will not deport illegal immigrants snagged in Alabama's dragnet unless they have a record of other crimes. President Barack Obama's administration has announced that its policy puts a higher priority on deporting those with criminal records, and less...

Carlos Martinez Gutierrez got caught smuggling three Mexican children into California. Now, his travails have reached the Supreme Court. On Tuesday, the court agreed to hear Gutierrez's case and another that raise questions potentially crucial for other children of illegal immigrants. If Gutierrez wins, some immigrants may find it easier to avoid removal and stay in the United States.

Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) thanked President Obama for circumventing the Legislative branch when it comes to immigration law. Title 8 Section 1325 of the U.S. Code makes it a federal crime to be in the United States illegally. Nevertheless, the Obama administration in August directed federal immigration officials to use "prosecutorial discretion" in deciding which illegal aliens to detain and deport. “We had a president of the United States that recently was speaking at National Council of La Raza who said during his speech, ‘There are those who simply wish me to bypass Congress when it comes to immigration,’ and...

After he was brought into the U.S. illegally as a 1-year-old, Luis Pedrote did so well in school that he won a President's Education Award in 2006. Today, his family says, Pedrote, 19, sits in a Dallas detention facility after he was picked up last month by Chicago police who realized his illegal status while questioning him at his Gage Park home about a potential suspect. "We just want our nephew back," said Pedrote's aunt, Elizabeth Manjarrez. "He's a good kid. He didn't do anything wrong."

On July 26, 2011, Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Illinois) was arrested outside of the White House after refusing to move when asked by authorities. Gutierrez, who sat in front of a sign that read "Stop Separating Our Families" with a line of protesters, refused to leave when asked by the police. Gutierrez was in attendance at a rally urging President Obama to do more to stop the deportation of illegal immigrants. MRCTV caught up with Gutierrez before he was arrested in which he said, "I think (President Obama) should use the broad discretionary power that the laws have conferred upon him...

Another day, another loony toons Democrat from Chicago. Luis Gutierrez doesn’t want to bother with the Senate or the House to pass the Dream Act (because he knows it will never pass). Instead, at a rally, Gutierrez shreaked at the top his lungs yelling at the crowd and challenging Obama to bypass Congress on the Dream Act. Gutierrez may be the new Anthony Weiner. Except no one has received any lewd photos of his private yet (at least that we know about.) Video posted by The Blaze. VAN NUYS - Immigration activists, officeholders and Christian leaders rallied at a San Fernando Valley church on Saturday, renewing angry calls for President Barack Obama to order a halt of deportations they say shatter the families of legal U.S. residents. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Rep. Howard Berman, D-Van Nuys, and immigration-reform proponent Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill., were among the speakers at La Iglesia en la Camino (The Church on the Way) in what was billed as a bipartisan town-hall meeting. "When communities are terrorized by ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) raids, when nursing mothers are torn from their babies, when children...

President Obama is pledging border security and pleading for help from Republicans as he steps up his campaign to pass an immigration reform bill, but new polling suggests the rift within his own party is actually deeper than within the GOP on the issue. The data from the Pew Center for the People and the Press’ massive look at political parties, released last week, found that the gap between the ends of the Democratic coalition on favoring stricter enforcement and on legalization is twice as large as the gap between hard-line Republicans and their more libertarian-leaning cohorts. Mr. Obama will...

The Illinois congressman charged with crafting President Obama’s amnesty bill has embarked on a national tour to promote a special program that allows illegal immigrants with children to remain in the United States. Launched by Democrat Luis Gutierrez, the "Campaign For American Children and Families” aims to grant a special parole to illegal aliens who have relatives in the U.S. so that families can remain together in the land of opportunity. The measure is essential to help those “whose lives are being turned upside down by deportation,” according to the veteran lawmaker who authored a bill to give the...

PROVIDENCE –– U.S. Rep. Luis V. Gutierrez, D-Ill., and hundreds of Rhode Island immigrants, both legal and illegal, gathered at a town-hall style meeting Saturday afternoon to draw attention to the toll that deportation is taking on families. In just one year with Barack Obama as president, Gutierrez pointed out, 400,000 people were deported from the United States –– more people than any other president has deported, he asserted. And most of them, Gutierrez said, are not violent criminals, but law-abiding, hard-working people. Speaking almost entirely in Spanish to a standing-room-only audience that packed the auditorium of the former Oliver...

http://www.floppingaces.net/2010/12/16/obamas-class-warfare-and-incitement-to-violence-bears-fruit-reader-post/ Police and fire officials are investigating an arson fire in Sandwich that has a disturbing similarity with a suspicious incident in Barnstable. In both cases, the arsonist left a calling card, the message, “(expletive) the rich” at the scene. At 3:30 a.m. on Nov. 24, flames engulfed an unoccupied home still under construction at 16 Boulder Brook Road in Sandwich. Only the exterior of the house had been completed. The home, which was valued at $500,000, had a three-car garage and three bedrooms, but no plumbing or electric service, Sandwich Fire Chief George Russell said. The heavy damage burned...

United States Congressman Luis Gutierrez has threatened civil disobedience if the DREAM Act, which would have offered a pathway to American citizenship to millions of illegal immigrants, is not passed into law. "We're going to make it uncomfortable for the Democratic Party," Gutierrez said, adding that immigration advocates would step up the pressure by drawing lessons from the movements for civil rights and women's suffrage. "There'll probably be civil disobedience. There will probably be a number of different actions. What we have to do is we have to break through this wall of silence, because we're invisible." Well, the DREAM...

Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) admitted to the FBI that he accepted free upgrades on a town home he purchased from convicted Chicago influence-peddler Tony Rezko, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. The congressman has previously been the subject of a federal investigation for engaging in real estate deals with a developer named Calvin Boender.During a 2008 interview with the FBI, Gutierrez reportedly said that he asked Rezko for upgrades on the town house before purchasing it. The congressman claimed that the price of the home had risen by $35,000 since he had first considered buying it, and Rezko agreed...

Congressman told FBI he asked for -- and got -- free home upgrades ### Convicted political fixer Tony Rezko gave U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez free upgrades on a riverfront town house after the congressman asked for them, Gutierrez told the FBI, the Chicago Sun-Times has learned. Gutierrez's comments to federal agents in a previously undisclosed 2008 interview contradict what the congressman told the Sun-Times in 2006 about the purchase. "I walked in with my wife -- as any other consumer could have -- and purchased the unit at the listed price, with no considerations," the Northwest Side congressman said then,...

Chicago bid for Rep. Gutierrez could be loss for immigration reform pushBy Russell Berman - 09/11/10 10:03 PM ET While Chicago supporters of Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) are pushing him to run for mayor, immigration advocates in Washington are less enthusiastic about seeing one of their leading champions leave the Capitol. Now in his ninth term, Gutierrez is considering whether to join a wide-open field of contenders for Chicago’s top job after longtime Mayor Richard Daley announced this week he would not seek re-election. A winning bid by Gutierrez would be an unmistakable loss for the immigration reform movement in...

The FBI has interviewed City Hall employees and Chicago aldermen about U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez's ties to a corrupt developer, according to records and interviews that raise new questions about the congressman amid an ongoing federal investigation. A former alderman convicted in the investigation told FBI agents that Gutierrez boasted of helping his longtime political supporter Calvin Boender obtain a lucrative zoning change for a development on the city's West Side. Another alderman told agents this year she thought Gutierrez was going to buy a home in the development.

During Saturday’s illegal rally supporting illegal aliens outside of the White House Congressman Luis Gutierrez was arrested chanting “Si se puede” (Yes, it is possible) and wearing a shirt saying “Arrest me not my friends” in English. Dems vigilant on Puerto Rico bill Two of the most prominent Hispanic Democrats in Congress are continuing their all-out offensive to kill a bill that would mandate a vote on Puerto Rico’s political status. And they’re taking direct aim at their leadership. Democratic Reps. Nydia Velazquez (N.Y.) and Luis Gutierrez (Ill.) sent out an e-mail to members of Congress Thursday morning urging them to vote no on the Puerto Rican Democracy Act, which would allow the island’s residents to vote yes or no on whether they want to continue their political status. An Arizona congressman urged businesses on Tuesday to boycott his state if the governor signs into law a bill to make illegal immigration a state offense. Rep. Raul Grijalva, a Democrat, said businesses need to punish the state if the bill becomes law as a way of making sure no other states follow suit. "Do not do business with the state," Mr. Grijalva said at a press conference on the Capitol grounds in Washington. Rep. Luis V. Guttierez, Illinois Democrat, also said if the law is signed then President Obama must assert the primacy of federal law in this area...

A congressman from the president’s home state is threatening that he will urge Latino voters to stay home this November if the Democratic Party does not make a concerted effort to pass comprehensive immigration reform. Rep. Luis Gutierrez (Ill.) is arguably President Barack Obama’s biggest Democratic critic in Congress. And he’s not fond of Obama’s top advisers at the White House, either. The Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) member has strongly criticized the administration’s policy on deportation and questioned its commitment to far-reaching reform. Some Democrats have felt little urgency in pursuing the controversial issue, partly because they see no risk...

Last month immigration reform, one of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s “10 most important legislative priorities,” took another step forward when Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) unveiled the “Comprehensive Immigration Reform for America’s Security and Prosperity Act of 2009.” Over 85 house Democrats have co-sponsored his bill. Gutierrez’s proposed legislation includes “earned legalization” for undocumented workers including their spouses and children. A payment of a $500 fine is required and a criminal background check must be passed. Gutierrez’s bill is not the only one working its way through Congress featuring a path to citizenship. In January 2009, for example, Vermont’s Sen....

There is no doubt the Democrats should be fearful of losing seats in Congress in the midterm elections; however, their blasé attitude about the Great Tsunami of November 2, 2010 suggests they have a plan. There are an estimated 15 to 20 million illegal aliens living in the U.S. On December 15, 2009, Rep. Luis V. Gutierrez (D-IL) introduced the Comprehensive Immigration Reform for America's Security and Prosperity Act of 2009, to the U.S. House of Representatives. WASHINGTON -- Rep. Luis Gutierrez, a leading congressional advocate for immigrants' rights, has introduced a bill that would allow millions of illegal immigrants to become U.S. citizens and would end a controversial program that enlists local police to enforce immigration laws. The bill is widely viewed as too liberal to pass. Obama administration officials have said they are looking instead to a more moderate, bipartisan immigration-reform bill to be introduced in the Senate early next year by Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.).Still, the Chicago Democrat made it clear that he and his allies expect a seat at the...

Most notable among the petitions for clemency granted during Holder’s tenure is the request from 16 members of a Puerto Rican Marxist terrorist group, the Armed Forces of National Liberation, known by its Spanish acronym FALN, which engaged in a robbery and terror campaign in both the U.S. and Puerto Rico during the 1970s and 1980s. The clemency petition, which was supported by Reps. WASHINGTON—Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Our history, our prosperity and our values have been shaped by immigrants. But our current immigration system does not work. President Bush has long called for an overhaul of the system to protect our borders and promote our prosperity. “This year presents a historic opportunity. Three months into the new Congress, immigration legislation is hitting some unexpected roadblocks. A mix of presidential politics and unforeseen fissures between Democrats and their Republican allies has stalled movement in the Senate. Key lawmakers in both chambers seem to be moving to the right to assuage conservatives who helped derail immigration legislation last year. Now there are doubts as to whether Congress will actually send an immigration bill to President Bush this year. Only a few months ago, Democrats and Republicans alike were predicting that immigration legislation would move relatively smoothly — with bipartisan support — through the new...

But now that he's a presidential candidate wooing conservative voters, McCain appears hesitant to stand next to his liberal colleague from Massachusetts. Now is a good time for the two senators to file an updated immigration bill. The country desperately needs reform. President Bush says he wants it. And Democrats control Congress, creating a political opportunity that didn't exist a year ago. But McCain and Kennedy have failed to reach agreement. Aides say they are arguing...

March 21, 2007 Yesterday, Congressmen Jeff Flake (R-AZ) and Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) held a conference call with reporters in which they announced their intention to introduce a "comprehensive immigration reform" bill on Thursday.
