An 'important' patch from this month’s Black Tuesday causes odd problems in many applications. It’s taken more than a week for various problem reports to take on a coherent theme, but it now appears as if an “elevation of privilege” patch for Windows, MS 15-038/KB 3045999, causes intermittent problems with a wide array of software.... [For example, on systems with McAfee:] Several applications fail to start after you install Microsoft Patch MS15-038 on systems with DLP [Data Loss Prevention for] Endpoint. Affected applications include, but are not limited to: CMD.EXE Explorer.EXE MMC-based applications Microsoft Office applications PowerShell ... it’s another...

We talk to professional photographer Julian Calverley about making art with a phone -- and the importance of Instagram. See the photo on the linked site: Julian Calverley Taking photos has long been one of the main selling points of the iPhone, but mobile photography has largely remained the realm of enthusiastic amateurs, populating Instagram and other social networks with artful snapshots. With their lower resolution and lack of upgradeable lenses, phones haven't played a big role in professional photography. Commercial photographer Julian Calverley, however, views his iPhone as more than just a casual tool. More accustomed to working with...

I need some advice. I have a rather large collection of vinyl records that I plan to record to an external computer hard drive. The record player that I have uses i-tunes to process each cut onto the computer. Does anyone on here have any experience with this that could maybe recommend a different/better idea to handle saving everything on to the hard drive. I am looking for flexibility in moving the finished product between computers. This is going to be a pretty long-term project, what with cigar and bourbon breaks, and I want to get it as near right...
  • iTunes stops working for Windows XP users, Apple security change likely to blame

iTunes users who still run Windows XP started to experience connectivity issues this week. As documented in an Apple Support Communities thread, they can’t log into the iTunes store, meaning functions like buying content, watching already purchased movies and TV shows, playing DRM-protected content, backing up, updating, and syncing all do not work. The issue has to do with the secure connection iTunes uses to connect to the iTunes Store, meaning it doesn’t affect users until they try to log in. While the support thread in question only has some 50 replies at the time of publishing, we expect it...

Darth Vader, the masked villain in the "Star Wars" sci-fi universe, has had a makeover. Japanese jeweler Ginza Tanaka unveiled a gold Darth Vader mask on Wednesday, months before the latest film in one of the most popular movie franchises of all time, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens", hits cinema screens in December. While the gold-plated mask is not for sale, commemorative gold coins engraved with Darth Vader or his Stormtroopers will be from May 4.

    NBC Bay Area ^ | Thursday, Apr 23, 2015 | Kris Sanchez
A gun enthusiast died in his Mountain View home on Thursday morning during a one-alarm fire that set off live rounds of ammunition in the garage, firefighters said. The fire broke out in the 700 block of Lola Lane about 3:30 a.m. When firefighters arrived, they found the man dead in his bedroom. Gary Macloud said he wanted to save his neighbor, "Dan," whom he identified as a gun aficionado and gun writer. But when he saw the thick smoke and the flames, he knew he couldn't help. "We were yelling, Dan, Dan, Dan," Macloud said. "Your first instinct is...

Sammiches! With Summer coming, I'm looking forward to nice tomatoes, and one of our favorite sandwiches is the classic BLT, for which nobody needs a recipe. (Before he died, my father-in-law would ship us boxes of his first eating tomatoes from PA, and we always looked forward to that - and to the sore gums that were a measure of our delighted excess :-) But when I was growing up, my favorite Summer sandwich was just thick tomato slices on white-bread toast, with lots of mayonnaise and salt and pepper. Due to this love of fresh tomatoes on bread, I...
  • Dead Pacifica Whale Tagged With "East Bay Rats Motorcycle Club" Graffiti

    04/23/2015 2:34:53 PM PDT · by nickcarraway · 82 replies
The carcass of a dead sperm whale that washed up on a beach in Pacifica was tagged with graffiti bearing the name of a local Bay Area gang. The graffiti, which spelled out "East Bay Rats Motorcycle Club" in what appeared to be white spray paint, was erased by Wednesday's high tide along the Sharp Park State Beach south of San Francisco. But photos posted online showed the graffiti scrawled across the whale's body. Several visitors to the beach told NBC Bay Area they deplored the action, with one visitor saying the whale's body should have been left to rest...

Microsoft released Build 10052 of Windows 10 for phones on Tuesday, along with a revised rollback tool that should help solve the bricking problems that Lumia 520 users and other unlucky souls experienced. The major problem that the new build solves is an issue where some users—including owners of the most popular Windows phone, the Lumia 520—suffered catastrophic failures that “bricked” the phones when they tried to roll them back to Windows 8.1. Microsoft said it has solved the bug on Lumia 520 phones, with an update to the Windows Phone Reset Tool.

When Hilda Gurney’s name crops up, they love to tell stories about her switcheroo involving aviator Charles Lindbergh at the Van Nuys Airport. The pilot and her copilot husband, Harlan “Bud” Gurney, decided in 1969 to take out a small plane, and Lindbergh — a close friend of the family who often stayed with them when he was in Los Angeles — asked if he could fly alongside. But the press got wind of the renowned aviator up in the SoCal skies, and reporters descended upon the airport to wait for his landing. Wise to the plan, Lindbergh and the...

IMPORTANT -- This thread is a followup to http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/3278876/posts - New Redirect to SMB Flaw in all Windows versions including Windows 10. It contains a list of the specific software packages affected, and there are a LOT of them. What would you say if we told you that your version of Windows is affected by a vulnerability that dates back to 1997? You’d laugh, right? Surely, after all, Microsoft would have patched the fault prior to releasing Windows 98, or at the latest, Windows 2000? Well, not quite. This Redirect to SMB vulnerability has its roots in the identically-named attack...
  • Looking for an outdoor nature microphone

I am trying to set up a system for my bedridden and hard of hearing aunt so that she can hear her beloved chimes in her backyard. The chimes are heavy mothers. Has anyone set up a system in their backyard to hear birds and sounds of nature and piped it into their house? I ordered and tried a product called Nature's Window NW3 monitor. I sent it back as it had a defect and for $350 probably had about $50 worth of electronic parts. On the internet I found lots of microphones and naturist setups geared for recording purposes....

Dear Diary: A singer often in need of a handy practice area, I sometimes vocalize in the subway (in addition to busking). The cathedral-like acoustics of these underground passages are friendly to the voice, and on my lunch break I can loosen my tie and warm up with some scales. I have found a little cul-de-sac perfect for this at a station near work, out of the paths of the Midtown commuters rushing through. Passers-by who hear my tenor coloratura sometimes pop their heads around the corner in curiosity; some smile or wave. But I go there for the architecture,...

At the top of this year Magpul announced yet another ground-breaking product, the PMAG 17. An inexpensive polymer 17-round Magpul magazine for Glock 17s, the PMAG 17 was guaranteed to succeed even before it hit the market. About the only thing that could go wrong was if some small, but critical step or test was overlooked. A small but critical mistake was made. Just a few days after the public release of the PMAG 17 Magpul has confirmed that some magazines are not feeding correctly when paired with other 9mm Glock pistols, specifically the Glock 19 and Glock 26. “Of...

An overzealous selfie photo snapper was arrested in Santa Cruz, the California Highway Patrol said Friday. A CHP motorcycle officer said he noticed a woman was driving on Highway 1 while taking selfies of herself with a cellphone. Cara Baldwin, 44, of Santa Cruz, was driving in heavy Thursday 5 p.m. rush hour traffic near the Morrissey Boulevard exit. Using a cellphone without a hands-free device while driving is illegal in California. When the officer tried to get Baldwin's attention, she did not notice, and almost hit the officer's motorcycle, the CHP said. Baldwin was eventually pulled over, and the...

I like savory tarts, quiche-s, pies. I think I enjoyed my first quiche in the mid-1970s, at a little party. I had never had anything like it, and began making them. Many years ago, I found on the 'young' WWW, a recipe for a sausage quiche on the website of the Mason House Inn of Betansport, in Iowa. I don't see the recipe on their website anymore, but it's been saved here: https://virtualcities.com/ons/ia/z/iaz86011.htm The change I make in it is to use hot sausage, not Italian Sweet. Also, I recently found this 'Tomato Galette', which is more of a rustic...
