An Indiana police officer has irked several in his South Bend community with a T-shirt he’s selling that touts a take-off slogan of the “I Can’t Breathe” mantra that followed New York suspect Eric Garner’s death — “Breathe Easy: Don’t Break the Law.” The aim of the shirt’s message is to say “police are there for you,” the South Bend uniform store owned by Mishawaka Police Cpl. Jason Barthel said in a statement, the New York Daily News reported.

A group of artists have claimed responsibility for hanging three effigies of lynching victims around the University of California-Berkeley campus this weekend. The artists, who say they are a 'collective of queer black and (people of color) artists, posted a message on a campus bulletin board today saying that the images - which many students and faculty found deeply offices - were part of an art project. The statement said the perpetrators are from the San Francisco Bay area - but does not state whether the people behind it are students. The artists did not identify themselves, but said that...

Parties and protests don’t typically overlap, but the “Selma” cast made an exception and a statement on Sunday night following the film’s Manhattan premiere. At one point during the otherwise splashy festivities, director Ava DuVernay took to the steps of the New York Public Library with actors David Oyelowo, E. Roger Mitchell, Wendell Pierce, Omar Dorsey, John Lavelle, Stephan James, Kent Faulcon, Lorraine Toussaint, Andre Holland, Tessa Thompson and Colman Domingo, donning “I Can’t Breathe” T-shirts over their partywear and raising their arms in the “don’t shoot” pose. It was not just an unusually sobering photo op, but also a...

Chippewa Falls, WI — Dashcam video has been released that shows the disturbing last moments of a man’s life as he’s detained by a Chippewa Falls police officer on the way to the hospital. 29-year-old Casey Kressin died after suffering a severe asthma attack when the vehicle that was rushing him to the hospital was pulled over by a Chippewa Falls police officer. After they were stopped, Kressin’s girlfriend immediately starts to beg the officer to take him to the hospital. The officer instead calls for an ambulance. The couple was just 3 miles from the hospital when they were...
  • 76 Arrested in London Die-In for Garner

Why can't the majority of black people and the rioters accept that the reason blacks are much more likely to get into trouble with the police is because they are much more likely to commit criminal acts, both serious and petty, and the reason they are much more likely to be harmed is because of the way they interact with the police, resisting arrest or even assaulting the officers? The question is rhetorical. They don't accept this because it's always difficult for every human being to recognise one's faults - or, as in this case, the faults of the...
  • Harvard Law Students Want Exam Delays Amid Brown, Garner Cases

Minority students at three prestigious law schools say they want to delay final exams because they’ve been busy protesting grand jury decisions in the deaths of unarmed black men at the hands of white police officers in New York City and Ferguson, Missouri, and haven’t had time to study. Student groups at Harvard Law School, Georgetown University Law Center and Columbia Law School say demonstrations and rallies over the Eric Garner and Michael Brown cases have prevented many students from adequately preparing for exams. Cities across the country have seen large-scale demonstrations since grand juries in both cases recently decided...
  • MSNBC Guests on 'Can't Breathe': Capitalism a Key Problem

A segment on today's Ed Show was very instructive as to what lies not far beneath the surface for many in the current protest movement. Two guests, discussing Ferguson and Staten Island, agreed that a key problem in America is . . . capitalism. First up was Rosa Clemente, a "hip hop activist" and 2008 Green Party VP candidate: "Capitalism, I think that is the institution all over this country. It is really the oppressive force." Next, Georgetown Prof. Marcia Chatelain, who said that the current moment has revealed "an incredible critique of capitalism that it isn't just police brutality...

Several players on both the Cleveland Cavaliers and Brooklyn Nets, including LeBron James, Kevin Garnett, Kyrie Irving and Deron Williams, wore black "I Can't Breathe" T-shirts during pregame warm-ups Monday, following in the footsteps of Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose who wore the same shirt in a game Saturday to show support for the family of Eric Garner. Of his T-shirt, LeBron James said: "It's not a Cavs thing. It's a worldly thing." "It's not a Cavs thing," James said before the game. "It's a worldly thing." On several occasions in the past couple weeks, James has spoken out about...
  • Howard Dean: Athletes Wearing 'Abortion is Murder' Not Same as 'I Can't Breathe'

Hypocrisy, thy name is Howard. The former Dem prez candidate is predictably all good with NBA players wearing "I Can't Breathe" t-shirts. But what, posited Joe Scarborough on today's Morning Joe, if other players wore "Abortion is Murder" shirts? Dean claimed that's "not exactly the same" and is "a different kind of debate." Why? Because, according to Dean, "the survival of our country depends" on resolving the police/black men issue. You really want to talk about "survival," Dr. Dean, when tens of millions have not survived since Roe v. Wade? View the video here.

If you’re in New York right now trying to get somewhere, good luck. The streets are full of idiots screaming “I Can’t Breathe”. There are lots of signs about white supremacism, imperialism and justice. Justice being the thing that happens when a court does something, not when a lynch mob demands something. Hipsters are lying down stiffly in Grand Central Station. NYPD cops are collecting overtime thanks to the morons screaming at them. The Revolutionary Communist Party and its splinter group, the Really Revolutionary Communist Party are out in force with signs. It’s hard to pick the ten biggest idiots...
  • Not a chokehold: Truth of the Garner arrest

It wasn’t a chokehold. That’s just the biggest single distortion in all the talk about the Eric Garner case, in which the public has been misinformed and misled from the start. The Rev. Al Sharpton has never had to put himself in harm’s way to protect our streets against crime, as our police officers do every day. He’s in no way qualified to stand on his soapbox and dictate procedures. I spent decades in law enforcement. During my time with the NYPD, I was responsible for over 1,400 felony arrests — any of which could’ve required the use of deadly...
