(CNN) Donald Trump has called Indiana Gov. Mike Pence and offered him the vice presidential slot on his ticket, CNN has learned. Pence has accepted. The pick sets up a stark clash in styles: a brash presumptive nominee with a tendency to freelance into controversies alongside a cautious former congressional leader who's stuck close to conservative orthodoxy since starting his career in talk radio. Trump said Thursday evening he's postponing the official announcement, previously set for Friday morning...

Reports surfaced on Thursday afternoon that presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump picked Indiana Gov. Mike Pence as his vice president (VP). “As Trump narrowed in on his choice of Pence, the two men spent time at both Trump’s golf resort in New Jersey in early July and at the Indiana governor’s mansion this week,” Roll Call notes, citing an anonymous Republican source for the report. The New York Times and CBS have also reported the pick is Pence. However, the Trump campaign is denying this is true. 1/2 A decision has not been made by Mr. Trump. He will be...
  • What a Pence VP pick would mean for Indiana’s race for governor

    Fox News, Channel 59 ^ | July 14, 2016 | Jessica Hayes
If Mike Pence is chosen, he must drop out of the Indiana governor’s race. Indiana law does not allow a candidate’s name to appear on both the gubernatorial ballot and vice presidential ballot. To do that, either Pence or his lawyer must deliver that paperwork to the Secretary of State’s office by noon on Friday. Then, anyone else who wants to run for the governor’s seat will have the same Friday noon deadline to formally add their name. The Republican Party Committee then has 30 days to name a replacement candidate for the governor's race. A 12-vote majority of the...

Indiana Gov. Mike Pence would bring constitutional fidelity, conservative credentials, traditional faith, foreign policy, Washington know-how, and a calm, steady, Midwestern demeanor to a national ticket with Donald Trump, boosting the New York businessman with several types of voters that may prove to be the key to building an electoral coalition that could propel Trump into the White House.

Joe Scarborough couldn’t have been kinder as he put the shiv into Mike Pence this morning. The opening segment of Morning Joe was devoted to the veepstakes, and Scarborough politely trashed Pence while making the case for Chris Christie. Scarborough went out of his way to praise Pence as an “able leader” and someone he likes. But he proceeded to say that Pence wasn’t “ready for prime time.” Joe broke out the deer-in-headlights metaphor and analogized Pence to previous running-mate “disasters.” On the other hand, Joe argued that Christie is someone who has been on the national stage, capable of...

CLEVELAND — A night highlighting the tragedy in Benghazi, Libya. An appearance by onetime football star Tim Tebow. A presentation detailing former President Bill Clinton’s sexual misconduct. Donald J. Trump, the presumptive nominee, has been promising a different kind of Republican National Convention, and plans obtained by The New York Times show that he is eager to put his showbiz stamp on the party’s gathering, even as he struggles to attract A-list talent. The roster of speakers obtained by The Times, and confirmed by two people with direct knowledge of the convention planning, reveals a lineup lacking many of the...

The Republican Party’s Platform Committee adopted a draft document Tuesday that not only recognizes the unborn child’s “fundamental right to life,” but also calls for defunding Planned Parenthood and states that the GOP will “not fund or subsidize health care which includes abortion coverage.” The draft platform still has to be adopted by the full GOP Convention, which will be held in Cleveland next week. The Platform Committee, which was chaired by Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) — who has a 100 percent pro-life voting record, according to the National Right to Life Committee — and dominated by social conservatives, adopted...
  • What Newt Gingrich Really Thinks of Donald Trump

Newt Gingrich, a leading candidate to be Donald Trump’s running mate, told Republicans at a closed-door meeting earlier this year that Trump is not a conservative, speaks to voters “at the lowest level of any candidate in either party,” and could lose in a landslide if he didn’t significantly change his approach to campaigning. Gingrich suggested Trump’s move from campaigning to governing would be challenging: “How we make the transition from, you know, language for fourth graders to real policy, I don’t know.” His comments came in a February speech in Washington to the Republican State Leadership Committee, months before...

Donald Trump's political director, Jim Murphy, told House members that the campaign would focus on 17 states this fall, the Wall Street Journal reports. Included are 12 states Barack Obama won in both 2008 and 2012 (145 electoral votes) and five states Mitt Romney won in 2012. Not in the list are extreme longshots like California and New York, states Trump has previously indicated would be competitive for him.

Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich -- two other top candidates for the veep position -- were also spotted heading to Indianapolis Wednesday. According to CNN, Gingrich is meeting with Trump Wednesday at the ex-speaker's request. And Sessions, the first senator to endorse Trump, told CNN of a possible Trump gathering: "We'll have a visit, I think." According to a New York Times report, the sudden flurry of activity from VP contenders to Indiana could be due to mechanical problems from Trump's plane, which prevented the candidate from flying back to his home base in New...

They simply care about making money and disrupting events for dead people.”

Evan Bayh is mounting a return bid to the U.S. Senate, giving national Democrats a boost as they aim to retake the chamber in November. An announcement about Bayh's candidacy for the Indiana Senate seat is expected soon, said a source familiar with the plans said on condition of anonymity because they will not be released publicly until later Monday. Initially expected Monday, the formal announcement has been delayed because of logistics. National Democratic leaders have encouraged Bayh to run for more than a year, ever since incumbent GOP Sen. Dan Coats announced he would not run again. Sen. Chuck...

He voted for the bill before he was (sort of) against it. Today much of the mainstream media jumped for joy when announcing that the Democrat Senate nominee in Indiana, Baron Hill, would step aside in favor of former Senator Evan Bayh to once again run for his old seat. Missing in all the happiness was any mention that Bayh, whose Senate career was rather undistinguished except for being the crucial 60th vote that made Obamacare possible, subsequently voiced extreme dissatisfaction with that same bill. Perhaps Bayh and the MSM hope that Bayh's radically shifting attitude would be sent down...

Indiana scheduled for Tuesday is raising speculation that the presumptive Republican nominee will announce Gov. Mike Pence as his running mate. The Washington Times reported Sunday evening that Pence has a “95 percent probability” of being Trump's choice, according to sources close to the campaign and to the governor. The first-term Indiana governor’s name has surfaced in recent weeks as a contender for the position. Pence tepidly endorsed Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas before the state's May primary, but later backed Trump, praising the chance to "take a new direction" in Washington. "The kind of leadership that I truly do...

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Rumors continue to swirl around Indiana Governor Mike Pence. Speculation continues on whether Donald Trump will pick Pence as a running mate. One of Trump’s former top aides is weighing in on a possible Pence selection, as is a fellow Midwestern governor. Pence only has ten days to make the decision to continue in the race for governor, or join Donald Trump as the vice presidential candidate. The governor spent the Fourth of July walking parades in Greene and Hamilton counties. This is after spending with weekend in New Jersey meeting with Trump. He said the two...
