  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY,(NEW)AMERICA

On this 239th birthday of (old) America, there can be no doubt in anyone’s mind that our country is completely different than the one that the founding fathers envisioned. Beginning in the 1960s, powerful forces have worked to transform America from the land of the free-thinking and free-speaking to the land of the emotion-driven. A very similar transformation happened in Germany immediately prior to the Nazis taking over that country.

I awoke with a start at the loud noise. I thought it might be early revilers when I realized it was just my tenants stomping their displeasure at the lack of hot water. I had hoped to be able to sleep later on my day off from my rotating shift at the Rite-Aid medical clinic. As my mind began to clear I realized today was the Fourth of July. In my youth it was known as Independence Day. Since it was removed from the list of federal holidays for its racist past not many people find reasons to celebrate. Even...

I was saving this for the Fourth of July, butt it occurred to me that it would be too depressing for such a glorious holiday. So I leave you to ponder its implications today, and save tomorrow for rolling out the flags. And you can bet that at least half of the people interviewed here about America’s Declaration of Independence were on the honor roll at their school.Remember: Sheeple are made not born. So if you must blame anyone for this sort of wanton ignorance, blame our public education system as well as its school of continuing education – MSM.All I...

Former CIA Deputy Director Michael Morell said Monday on CBS This Morning there was “nothing routine” about July 4 terrorist attack warnings by the FBI and Department of Homeland Security, adding that he would not be surprised if “we’re sitting here a week from today talking about an attack.” Federal authorities issued warnings across the United States of potential terroristic targeting of Independence Day celebrations

A Monday piece in IO9 contained some revelations about the upcoming sequel to 1996’s “Independence Day,” which is entitled “Independence Day: Resurgence.” 20 years after the great alien invasion flattened many of Earth’s largest cities and killed untold millions of people, the world is still united in building up its defenses against a return engagement. These defenses apparently include a moon base.

China.org: Hungary marks anniversary of 1848 uprising against Habsburg rule Hungarians commemorated the 167th anniversary of their revolution and failed war of independence against the Habsburg Monarchy in 1848 by holding a series of social and political events on Sunday. A major event was the awarding of the nation's highest cultural and scientific awards, the Kossuth and Szechenyi Prizes. President Janos Ader awarded the prizes in arts, sciences, and humanities, to thirty two people in areas ranging from veterinary science to nuclear physics and photography to opera. Acknowledging the significance of the red letter days of celebration, Ader noted that...

(VIDEO-AT-LINK) Since the American colonies declared independence from Great Britain in 1776, there have been questions of what that independence means for America’s black citizens. As early as 1781, states were officially observing Independence Day – a full 82 years before Lincoln would issue the Emancipation Proclamation and 85 years before the last slaves were freed in Galveston, Texas. Abolitionist and former slave Frederick Douglass was asked to speak at an Independence Day celebration in 1852 at Rochester’s Corinthian Hall. In a time when most other blacks were still not free, he gave the speech - though it may not...

It is good to remember, at least once a year, that Independence Day is more than an old movie with Will Smith. “The enemy fleet was nearing Philadelphia,” Bob Morrison, a senior fellow at the Family Research Council writes. “Many delegates to the Continental Congress knew that if they were arrested, they would be tried for treason against the British Crown.” “The punishment for treason was hanging, drawing and quartering. Massachusetts’ Samuel Adams was not afraid. He moved that the delegates pray for God’s protection and guidance. But we are not all of one denomination, responded the devout young New...

Before he was America’s first president, George Washington was a spy and a soldier, serving on America’s frontier. His spying activities in advance of the French and Indian War brought him a national reputation and helped precipitate that great war. The reputation he built then secured a military command for him in that war which would eventually lead to international acclaim as America’s first commander-in-chief. In the year of 1753, French soldiers marched south from Canada into an area where claims of sovereignty between France and England were in dispute. This area is roughly where Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is now located...

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania We meet to celebrate the birthday of America. The coming of a new life always excites our interest. Although we know in the case of the individual that it has been an infinite repetition reaching back beyond our vision, that only makes it the more wonderful. But how our interest and wonder increase when we behold the miracle of the birth of a new nation. It is to pay our tribute of reverence and respect to those who participated in such a mighty event that we annually observe the fourth day of July. Whatever may have been the...

As we celebrate the 4th of July let's take a moment to reflect on the enormous cost, in lives and treasure, that it took us to earn our independence. •8.37 years was how long the war lasted •80,000 militia and Continental Army soldiers served at the height of the war •56,000 British soldiers fought at the height of the war •30,000 German mercenaries known as Hessians fought for Britain during the war •55,000 Americans served as privateers during the war •25,000 Revolutionary Soldiers died during the war •8,000 Revolutionary Soldiers died from wounds inflicted during battle •17,000 Revolutionary Soldiers died...

We all know the story of American independence, don’t we? A rugged frontier people became increasingly tired of being ruled by a distant elite. A group calling themselves Patriots were especially unhappy about being taxed by a parliament in which they were unrepresented. When, in 1775, British Redcoats tried to repress them, a famous Patriot called Paul Revere rode through the night across eastern Massachusetts, crying “The British are coming!” The shots that were fired the next day began a war for independence which culminated the following year in the statehouse in Philadelphia, when George Washington and others, meeting under...

On this Fourth of July, 238 years after Congress declared independence from the British Empire through the Declaration of Independence, it’s well worth reminding ourselves of a number of things about the Founding era. In 1776, numerous individuals, families, committees, congregations, localities, and states had already proclaimed their independence, and almost no remaining imperial structure could continue to operate with any legitimacy in what would very soon become 13 states.  By the very beginning of July of 1776, it became clear that members of Congress would have to catch up quickly to the more activist localities if they hoped to...

On the Fourth of July in the United States of America we celebrate freedom. In particular we celebrate freedom from tyranny, freedom from government that is not representative, and freedom from unchecked power and unaccountable sovereigns.Yet as Christians, we cannot overlook that there are ways of understanding freedom today that are distorted, exaggerated, and detached from a proper biblical, Christian, or Natural Law context. Many modern concepts of freedom treat it as somewhat of an abstraction.Yes,  many speak of freedom in the abstract and have a hard time nailing down the details. So let’s talk about some of the details. Most people...

The chaos unfolding at the border demonstrates the catastrophic, real-world consequences of the president’s lawless conduct. For the last five years, with average household incomes falling and Americans being pushed out of the workforce, the president has been engaged in a sustained campaign to strip away Americans’ immigration protections. He has accomplished his aims: Interior removals have been cut by more than 40 percent. President Obama’s own former ICE director reported to the Los Angeles Times that “if you are a run-of-the-mill immigrant here illegally, your odds of getting deported are close to zero.”

“We are subject to the men who rule over us, but subject only in the Lord. If they command anything against him, let us not pay the least regard to it.” Book Four, Calvin’s Institutes “I fix all the blame of these extraordinary proceedings upon the Presbyterians.” So one colonist loyal to King George wrote to friends in England. Around the same time, Horace Walpole spoke from the English House of Commons to report on these “extraordinary proceedings” in the colonies of the new world. “There is no good crying about the matter,” he said. “Cousin America has run off...
