A decision was made on whether four beer stores in Whiteclay will have their liquor licenses renewed. The Nebraska Liquor Control Commission voted to deny the license renewals for the four beer stores in the town of eight people. The three-member panel cited inadequate law enforcement in the unincorporated village of eight residents. Most of that beer, amounting to almost 4 million cans annually, is sold to residents of the Pine Ridge Reservation, located a mile away across the South Dakota border where alcohol is banned. The decision comes after more than 10 hours of testimony during the hearing two...

  • Before European Christians Forced Gender Roles, Native Americans Acknowledged 5 Genders

It wasn’t until Europeans took over North America that natives adopted the ideas of gender roles. For Native Americans, there was no set of rules that men and women had to abide by in order to be considered a “normal” member of their tribe. In fact, people who had both female and male characteristics were viewed as gifted by nature, and therefore, able to see both sides of everything. According to Indian Country Today, all native communities acknowledged the following gender roles: “Female, male, Two Spirit female, Two Spirit male and Transgendered.”

Some Democrats are saying they plan to hold up the appointment of Neil Gorusch to the Supreme Court but a new development is going to make that a little tricky. Two Native American advocacy groups apparently like Gorsuch and want to see him seated on the bench. Ryan Lovelace reports at the Washington Examiner: Support for Gorsuch from Native American groups could put pressure on Western Democrats Two leading Native American organizations have penned a letter of support for Judge Neil Gorsuch’s Supreme Court nomination to the leadership of the Senate Judiciary Committee. In a letter obtained by the Washington...

An ongoing source of controversy in baseball is the Indians' ongoing use of the Chief Wahoo logo. For the uninitiated, here's the logo in question: The team has, without much acknowledgment, de-emphasized Wahoo in recent years, but it's still an occasional part of the team's uniform. As for the league, MLB addressed the issue in passing during last year's ALCS, but now it appears that commissioner Rob Manfred and the team are having more in-depth discussions about the use of Wahoo ... [Snip] The Indians were of course just awarded the 2019 All-Star Game ... If recent hints and cultural...
  • Minnesota Rep. Susan Allen Is Two-Spirit, a Lesbian, and She Won’t Be Assimilated

When Susan Allen was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2012, she became the first openly lesbian Native American woman to win office in any state legislature. But framing that achievement as one for the lesbian community alone obscures another aspect of Allen’s identity, and one that is directly connected to her Native American ancestry: Allen also identifies as “two-spirit.” While Americans are increasingly familiar with the elements that make-up our modern LGBTQ abbreviation, other, often older queer identities like two-spirit remain unappreciated to the point of erasure. But if Allen and other two-spirit folks have their way,...

A Standing Rock Sioux Tribe representative said the Dakota Access Pipeline controversy served as a springboard for discussion this week during a listening session with the Donald Trump’s transition team and tribal leaders. Chad Harrison, member of the Standing Rock Tribal Council, was among tribal leaders from around the country who participated in a listening session Wednesday in Washington. While the event was not focused on Dakota Access, the Standing Rock Tribe’s lawsuit over the pipeline’s Missouri River crossing raised awareness of broader issues, such as the need for greater tribal consultation on infrastructure projects and other policy issues, Harrison...

On Monday, Native Americans conducted a forgiveness ceremony with U.S. veterans at the Standing Rock casino, giving the veterans an opportunity to atone for military actions conducted against Natives throughout history. In celebration of Standing Rock protesters’ victory Sunday in halting construction on the Dakota Access Pipeline, Leonard Crow Dog formally forgave Wes Clark Jr., the son of retired U.S. Army general and former supreme commander at NATO, Wesley Clark Sr. This was a historically symbolic gesture forgiving centuries of oppression against Natives and honoring their partnership in defending the land from the Dakota Access Pipeline.

Perhaps significantly advancing the time frame designated in the Army Corps of Engineers’ notice several Standing Rock Camps would face some form of eviction on December 5, North Dakota Governor Jack Dalrymple opportuned an incoming winter storm to issue a mandatory emergency evacuation order — for all encampments north of the Cannonball River. Although the evacuation appears not be one of force, it is obligatory — all water protectors camping in Army Corps-managed land have been ordered by Dalrymple to take all possessions and vacate the area. “These persons are ordered to leave the evacuation area immediately, and are further...

Native Americans protesting the construction of the 1,200-mile Dakota Access oil pipeline: quit throwing rocks at police; stop setting cars ablaze; discard your “Children Don’t Drink Oil” signs—and join your fellow brothers and sisters in making America great again. “We don’t have weapons. … We are looking out for … the children who are not even born yet,” Standing Rock Sioux chairman David Archambault II said to defend his 10,000-member tribe’s use of violence, aggression and disorderly conduct to protest the construction of the $3.7 billion Dakota Access pipeline. No weapons? “A line of sheriff’s officers retreated in the face...

A couple of Chicago Cubs fans are fighting a bitter custody battle... of two precious baseball tickets. A divorcing suburban mother submitted an 'emergency petition for World Series tickets' this week, according to Cook County court documents obtained by the Associated Press Friday. Nancy Riddle wanted to the Cubs's Game 4 against the Cleveland Indians Saturday. But a judge's order says the tickets are held by her estranged husband and fellow Cubs fan John Riddle. Judge Marya Nega ruled after in-court arguments that the husband can keep the tickets for himself and the couple's 12-year-old son but should pay for...

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump delivers a line in the Indian language Hindi in a campaign commercial airing on Indian-American cable stations. The ad features some of Trump's comments at a recent speech to the Republican Hindu Coalition. Several top Bollywood stars were in attendance as Trump talked of his love for the Indian people and his desire to end terrorist violence, like the attacks on Mumbai. He also delivers the line "ab ki baar Trump sarkar," which translates to "this time, a Trump government." A recent analysis of minorities in the 2016 election by UPI and CVoter found Trump...

As a 43-year-old lifelong Red Sox fan, I understand heartbreak. I know exactly what it’s like to be a Cubs fan as they hurtle toward another potential devastating post-season loss. That’s why I should be excited and rooting right along with Cubs Nation as they set their sights on their first World Series title since 1908. But I just can’t get into it. Why? Because their owner, the Ricketts family, has done more to kill constitutional conservative campaigns this election cycle than just about any group in America. Who are the Ricketts and how are they protecting Big Government RINOs...

A Toronto court will hear arguments Monday on an attempt to bar the Cleveland Indians from using their team name and "Chief Wahoo" logo in Ontario. The legal challenge by indigenous activist Douglas Cardinal comes on the same day the team plays the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series in Toronto. The long-standing logo, which appears on some team caps and jerseys, depicts a grinning, red-faced cartoon with a feather headband. Cardinal's lawyers will ask the court Monday to bar the usage of the name and logo by the team, Major League Baseball and...

A Facebook Live video of the protest shows a pickup truck revving its engine in front of the crowd that had spilled onto the street in Reno's downtown. Several protesters confronted the driver and the passenger before the truck drives through the crowd, tires squealing, at about 6:40 p.m. Monday. Soto said the activists did not have a permit to protest in the street, but some had gathered in the travel lanes of Virginia Street on the main casino drag. Seemingly every day some politician or another, usually from the left of the political spectrum, calls for more infrastructure investment. In North Dakota there is a $3.7 billion infrastructure project under construction. This project received all the necessary federal permits and is 60% complete. But now the Obama administration, bowing to radical left wing protestors, has thrown the project into doubt with its unprecedented decision last Friday to halt construction on one section of the project. Apparently infrastructure investment is not the priority we were led to believe. The project in question is known as the Dakota Access Pipeline. It...

The Obama administration shocked the oil industry last week, pulling the plug on a major oil pipeline from the Bakken that had become a flashpoint between a pipeline company on the one hand, and a growing coalition of Native American tribes and environmentalists on the other. Everyone was anxiously waiting a Friday ruling from a U.S. federal judge, who was weighing a request from the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe to stop construction on the Dakota Access Pipeline, a $3.8 billion 1,168-mile oil pipeline that would run from North Dakota to Iowa and Illinois. The pipeline would threaten sacred lands and...
