Is anyone else seeing issues with Internet sites right now? I just had both LinkedIn and Reddit give me the following message: Safari can't open the page "here the link is spelled out in the message unique to the site I was trying to get to". The certificate for this site is invalid. You might be connecting to a server pretending to be "again the site here" which could put your confidential information at risk. I was using long saved bookmarks and also tried to type in the addresses manually but got the same thing. Possible another DOS attack similar...

Someone successfully shut down many websites Friday, attacking a crucial part of the internet that has been made more vulnerable due to an Obama administration decision to surrender American control, according to experts. Websites like Twitter, Spotify, Reddit and many others were not working for a large portion of U.S. citizens Friday, after unknown hackers breached the servers of Dyn, a major domain name system (DNS) host. Essentially the “yellow pages” of online addresses, DNS is the technical network that converts web address names into numbers. “We began monitoring and mitigating a DDoS attack against our Dyn Managed DNS infrastructure....

Obama administration officials sought on Monday to reassure the public that it was taking steps to counter new types of cyber attacks such as the one Friday that rendered Twitter, Spotify, Netflix and dozens of other major websites unavailable. The Department of Homeland Security said it had held a conference call with 18 major communication service providers shortly after the attack began and was working to develop a new set of “strategic principles” for securing internet-connected devices. DHS said its National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center was working with companies, law enforcement and researchers to cope with attacks made possible...

Chinese firm admits its hacked DVRs, cameras were behind Friday's massive DDOS attack Botnets created from the Mirai malware were involved in Friday's cyber attack. Michael Kan - IDG News Oct 23, 2016 A Chinese electronics component manufacturer says its products inadvertently played a role in a massive cyberattack that disrupted major internet sites in the U.S. on Friday. Hangzhou Xiongmai Technology, a vendor behind DVRs and internet-connected cameras, said on Sunday that security vulnerabilities involving weak default passwords in its products were partly to blame. According to security researchers, malware known as Mirai has been taking advantage of these vulnerabilities...

Default passwords on devices from the digital video recorder in your living room to the security camera in your office threaten the stability of the internet, as hackers build vast networks of “Internet of Things” devices to bombard websites with traffic. The attack on Dyn, a domain name service provider, that disrupted access to high-profile sites such as Twitter, Spotify and the New York Times on Friday, highlighted the risks posed by the billions of devices connected to the internet with little or no cyber security protections. Unidentified hackers took over tens of millions of devices using malicious software called...

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is reportedly investigating. The attack raised fears that this could be a trial run for an attempt at a major disruption of the U.S. presidential election. While many of the websites affected by the first attack, which hit the East Coast, are back up, sites hosted on the West Coast, including Twitter and Recode, have been hit, and were unavailable for many as of 11 a.m. Friday. As of 11 a.m., Dyn’s online update about its response to the attacks said the company was continuing to “investigate and mitigate.” The outages appear to have resulted...

Twitter, Spotify and Reddit, and a huge swath of other websites were down or screwed up this morning. This was happening as hackers unleashed a large distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack on the servers of Dyn, a major DNS host. It’s probably safe to assume that the two situations are related.

The US government’s plan to relinquish stewardship of key internet governance functions is under attack from Republicans who are using blatant falsehoods and fear-mongering to obstruct the historic transfer, according to internet policy experts. Led by Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, Republicans are working to sabotage the US government’s long-standing plan to transfer oversight of core internet technical functions, including management of the Domain Name System (DNS), to a nonprofit group of global stakeholders.

For more than two hours on Friday morning, much of the web seemed to grind to a halt—or at least slow to dial-up speed—for many users in the United States. More than a dozen major websites experienced outages and other technical problems, according to user reports and the web-tracking site downdetector.com. They included The New York Times, Twitter, Pinterest, Reddit, GitHub, Etsy, Tumblr, Spotify, PayPal, Verizon, Comcast, EA, the Playstation network, and others. How was it possible to take down all those sites at once?

U.S. Google Trends for "How to vote for Trump," "How to vote for Hillary" and "How to vote for Clinton" over the last 30 days show a spike in searches following the first and second presidential debates. Not surprising: People are fired up and want to know how to cast a vote! But the data show one disparity worth noting: "How to vote for Trump" usually ranks higher than "How to vote for Clinton" and "How to vote for Hillary." There could be a number of reasons why, but the trend brings up one important point: Trump doesn't have as...

WikiLeaks said Monday that founder Julian Assange had to put into play “appropriate contingency plans” after a “state party” severed his internet link. The night before, WikiLeaks published three cryptic tweets that left followers alarmed and confused. Here’s the Monday morning tweet: here The three tweets sent out the night before referenced (Secretary of State) John Kerry, Ecuador and UK FCO (the United Kingdom’s Foreign Commonwealth Office). Each was preceded by the word “pre-commitment” 1, 2 or 3, and followed by a 64-digit number.
