A 28-year-old Winder man called 911 on Feb. 17 and said he was invisible. Paramedics with Barrow County Emergency Services and a deputy with the Barrow County Sheriff's Office responded to a Chancey Circle residence following the 911 call. According to an incident report, when the deputy arrived at the location he was advised by first responders that the caller did not need medical assistance and this was the fourth or fifth time paramedics had been to the residence in the past couple weeks. The deputy was told the caller wanted a ride to the hospital "so he could get...

It’s an anniversary of sorts. It was four years ago this week, the day after the New Hampshire primary when I first began to become an invisible man. It all started when I fell down dead on the living room floor. Apparently, a lifetimes of cigarettes, brownies and Italian sausage has consequences. At midnight, without any warning other than mild heartburn, I collapsed and heard my wife call 911. She alternated between assuring me that I was fine and telling the 911 operator that if they didn’t get there soon, I would be gone. Within minutes there was the loud...

This month's Freeper Reading Club (now over 100 members) discussion is about Ralph Ellison's "Invisible Man." As I stated when assigning this book, as soon as you think you know where this book is heading, it completely changes directions and surprises you. Upon re-reading "Invisible Man" it seems apparent to me that Joseph Heller, author of "Catch-22," must have read this book since much of the surreal absurdity in "Invisible Man" was reflected in his own acclaimed book years later. As we saw in "Invisible Man," nobody really saw the man (never named) as he really was. To them he...

Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama Monday warned of an erosion in business ethics, which he said offended US morals and endangered the might of US financial markets. In a major speech on economic policy, the Illinois Senator condemned the Bush administration's "massive tax cuts" and called for more transparency in the housing market, following the subprime mortgage crisis. "In recent years, we have seen a dangerous erosion of the rules and principles that have allowed our market to work and our economy to thrive," Obama said in a speech at the NASDAQ market site. "Instead of thinking about what's good...

<p>"Battle Royal" is perhaps the most memorable chapter in Ralph Ellison's acclaimed novel, "Invisible Man," published 51 years ago.</p> <p>It likely will make an impression on the class of 2004 at Fort Cherry High School, though not necessarily for its literary value.</p>
