Let me first apologize to Rush Limbaugh. Last week in explaining why NFL commissioner Roger Goodell needed to put an end to Limbaugh's latest publicity stunt, I attributed racially insensitive quotes to Limbaugh that I read in two Missouri newspapers, saw on CNN and confirmed through a Google search. Prior to posting the article, I never found a denial of these quotes by Limbaugh, and had no reason to believe those statements were not true. It was unfair to Limbaugh. And I regret that. For some reason, I'm not afraid of blogs. I enjoy them. I post on message boards using my real name. I respond to the e-mails of bloggers. They don't threaten me or the newspaper/journalism industry I love. So I was somewhat stunned Tuesday night when one of the great journalist/authors of this era, Buzz Bissinger, erupted on HBO's "Costas Now" at the mere sight of deadspin moderator Will Leitch. After appearing on the CNN programs Lou Dobbs and Anderson Cooper 360, Jason Whitlock may be on his way to national stardom not as a sportswriter but as a pundit and political commentator. We went to Youtube for evidence and by jolly there it was. Among Whitlock’s greatest hits on MSNBC's Tucker Carlson show (and we’re paraphrasing here): ‘Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are domestic terrorists lighting fires and picking everyone’s pocket on the way out of town. Jackson should be down at Duke apologizing to those lacrosse players – he owes them an apology for stirring up that mess....

Thank you, Don Imus. You’ve given us (black people) an excuse to avoid our real problem. You’ve given Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson another opportunity to pretend that the old fight, which is now the safe and lucrative fight, is still the most important fight in our push for true economic and social equality. Jason Whitlock is standing in for Rome this week, and while I don't know much about him, from what I've seen I enjoy his shtick. He's smart, funny and seems to successfuly walk the fine line of expressing strong views without being malicious. Another plus: his physique and bearing remind me of one of my all-time favorite movie characters in my all-time favorite movie - Sydney Greenstreet as Signor...
