KANSAS CITY, Kan. (BP) -- What's the best movie ever made? A subjective question, if ever there was one. That's the magic of movies: some folks will enjoy a film that may seem an endurance test for others. While "Casablanca," "Citizen Kane" or "Lawrence of Arabia" may be prime examples of technical and artistic innovators, I challenge you to suggest a more important message than that found in "It's A Wonderful Life." In this film about an angel sent to Earth to rescue a man on the brink of suicide, James Stewart's George Bailey is given the opportunity to see...

United States: Indispensable member of the free nations of the globe In the 1946 Fred Capra film It’s a Wonderful Life, Jimmy Stewart plays the part of George Bailey whose life challenges–legal, financial, personal–seem so overwhelming that he believes it would be better if he’d never been born. An angel named Clarence shows him what a world without George would look like. George realizes that he has affected the world in countless positive ways, and a world without him would be dark, hopeless and cruel. I wonder if the world is currently having an It’s a Wonderful Life experience. There...

We’ve seen Ted Cruz’s story before. In 1939 Jimmy Stewart and Frank Capra teamed up to produce the classic, ”Mister Smith goes to Washington.” What started out as a nice little “what if” movie about one man’s influence in Washington and ended up being an enduring reminder of the power of truth to destroy lies. The parallels between Stewart’s Senator Jefferson Smith and Texas Senator Ted Cruz aren’t exact, but strong enough to make the point Capra was trying to make. Both are young, intelligent, fearless and idealistic. When Smith tries to pass a simple, wholesome sounding bill he is...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKJ7Tk0sfbc The pick for this week's feature is "Night Passage". This 1957 western features decorated WWII vets and patriots Jimmy Stewart and Audie Murphy as brothers on the opposite sides of the law. I miss patriotic, pro-American actors like Stewart and Murphy. Also features, Hugh Beaumont(a/k/a Ward Cleaver, one of TV's best on-screen dads) as a railroad tycoon.

One of the best of the Anthony Mann-directed Jimmy Stewart westerns of the 1950s. Love the scene at the beginning when Stewart tosses the guns to the two cowboys. It's definitely one of his grittier roles.

The full edited title: The Yeti, a severed finger spirited from Nepal, and a famous film star. DNA tests will finally solve a truly bizarre mystery Set high in a remote Himalayan mountain range stands the Pangboche Buddhist monastery. During heavy snowstorms, it can be found only by travellers who listen for the monks’ ceremonial horns. The walls are lined with traditional Nepalese paintings depicting the treacherous tracks to the monastery. And among them are pictures of the legendary ape-like creature we refer to as the Yeti.

This wonderful Christmas perennial is very unusual for films in that Hays Code Era, a villain gets away with the crime. Does that affect your feelings about this movie? For me, when I saw this movie in my youth, it did catch my thought and I remember asking my parents why. Now as a seasoned adult, I think that I appreciate a movie that does not wrap up all of the threads into a neat package.

The Jimmy Stewart Museum needs a George Bailey moment. It needs a community of good-hearted people who revere all that’s good about Hollywood to dance in with baskets of cash to save it from a dreary Pottersville of a future with shuttered windows and sidewalks of scowling strangers. It needs a Sam Wainwright to wire it a line of credit to ensure future generations of Americans won’t forget about a Yankee Doodle Dandy whose charm and patriotism still resonate. Hee! Haw! “It’s touch and go right now,” says museum executive director Timothy Harley. “We need a cash influx to help...

A brilliant scene from the end of "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington", when Jeff Smith, after 23 hours of talking sense to the nation, gets hit with 50,000 phony telegrams demanding that he resign. If this scene doesn't move you, then you have a stone heart and a leather soul!

the case of It’s a Wonderful Life. When the film was released in 1946, it was given a 28-year copyright term which was eligible for a 28-year renewal. For whatever reason, a request wasn’t put in for renewal, and it was believed to have fallen into the public domain in 1975. Had it not connected with the American people on its rediscovery, it would have become a resident of dollar DVD bins, like other public domain mainstays such as the Fleischer Superman cartoons or Bill Cosby’s TV movie Tell All My Friends on the Shore. However, the movie studio smelled...

When it comes to a Christmastime movie, a perennial favorite of most everyone is It’s a Wonderful Life. Jimmy Stewart made no secret it was his favorite film and favorite role as George Bailey. The poignant slice of Americana is on the Vatican’s film list and No. 5 on the Register’s 100 best films list. No matter how many times we watch it, the story remains fresh and remarkably uplifting. And with strong spiritual implications whose foundations were laid before filming began. Before Stewart became George Bailey, his guardian angel surely watched over him during harrowing combat missions in World...

Remember the scene near the end of It's a Wonderful Life, where Jimmy Stewart, playing the role of George Bailey, breaks down in a pub, crying out to God in utter despair? (Watch the scene here; fast-forward to the 5:30 mark.) Apparently Stewart wasn't really acting; those tears were real. In this 1977 article that Stewart wrote for Guideposts, the actor recalls that George "is unaware that most of the people in town are arduously praying for him. In this scene, at the lowest point in George Bailey's life, Frank Capra was shooting a long shot of me slumped in...

Lots of people love this movie of course. But I’m convinced it’s for the wrong reasons. Because to me “It’s a Wonderful Life” is anything but a cheery holiday tale. Sitting in that dark public high school classroom, I shuddered as the projector whirred and George Bailey’s life unspooled.
