On May 31, 1889, a massive flood that swept through the valley area hit Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The deluge destroyed hundreds of homes and businesses and left thousands dead. The cause of this particular disaster was that the build up of water in the local reservoir, swollen by a drenching month of rain, finally burst through the weakened dam.
