  • God to Intercessors: Just Stop Saying "Just"

For decades, God has lavished his followers with linguistic grace regarding what could be considered an epidemic in the prayer world – the use of the word "just." Usually found in a pattern similar to "God, please just [insert petition] and just [insert another petition]," the word "just" has made answering prayers a confusing and tedious process for the Almighty. In response, God declared earlier this month that Christians everywhere may no longer use the word "just" during intercessory prayer, effective immediately.

WASHINGTON - Can technology identify someone thinking about committing a terrorist attack? The Department of Homeland Security is exploring that possibility. Last month, it queried researchers about designing a system that would detect deceptive behavior by flagging physiological and behavioral cues such as heartbeat, respiration and facial expression, using thermal imaging, infrared cameras and audio and eye-tracking, among other techniques. A related program, Project Hostile Intent, is exploring the use of involuntary facial and speech signals captured on video to identify people "involved in possible malicious or deceitful acts" - before they ever commit the crime.
  • Rumsfeld: Global Cooperation Critical, Not Just Desirable

SINGAPORE, June 3, 2006 – More nations are freer than ever before, yet freedom is increasingly under assault from violent extremists and rogue nations, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld today told defense ministers of Asian and Pacific nations meeting here this weekend. "In the present security environment, cooperation among free nations is not simply desirable, it is critical," Rumsfeld said in a speech at the International Institute of Strategic Studies' Asia Security Summit, also known as the Shangri-La Dialogue. Rumsfeld said this forum is valuable because it allows countries with like interests to meet and discuss transnational issues. "These gatherings...

5/1/2006 - NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. (AFPN) -- In the wake of the attacks that took place on Sept. 11, 2001, the Department of Defense implemented new initiatives to thwart future attacks on U.S. soil. These measures were called “threat conditions.” It wasn’t until 2004 that the Defense Department revamped threatcon procedures into what are now known as Force Protection Conditions, or FPCONs. The old threat conditions were just not specific enough, said an anti-terrorism official. “We needed these new measures to not only prevent attacks from foreign terrorists, but domestic ones as well. “These might not be the...

Neanderthals were not stupid, just a bit anti-social IAN JOHNSTON SCIENCE CORRESPONDENT "CRUDE, boorish and slow- witted" - even dictionaries give Neanderthals a hard time. But our prehistoric cousins were in reality just as smart as we are and did not die out as a result of a lack of brain power, according to a new archaeological study. Until now, the leading theory of why the Neanderthals disappeared has been that a lack of intelligence meant they were less efficient hunters. But a team of US archaeologists believe they met their evolutionary end because of a failure to maintain social...

The CP interview: Dr. Michael Osterholm of the University of Minnesota's Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy talks about the flu bug that could bring the world to its knees. BY STEVE PERRY3-22-2006 Scare headlines about the possibility of a deadly flu pandemic have been with us for a few years now, ever since the H5N1 bird-flu virus that first appeared in Hong Kong in 1997 resurfaced in the region in 2003. But in the past month the drumbeat of such stories has grown faster and louder: Avian Flu Arrives in Poland. Turkey. Azerbajian. Germany. Denmark. And, just last...

Thoughts at the Korean DMZ. Folks, yesterday I toured the demilitarized zone (DMZ) dividing North and South Korea. In fact, I went 20-30 feet into North Korean territory, inside a United Nations' conference hut that stands exactly on the demarcation line or border between the Koreas. I toured checkpoints and even an infiltration tunnel that the North Koreans built to get their troops into the south in the event they decided to invade. I saw the North Korean flag fluttering in the distance--the largest of its kind atop a pole/assembly also the tallest of its kind. Everywhere I looked there...

/28/2006 - HURLBURT FIELD, Fla. (AFPN) -- Most people in Air Force Special Operations Command think of going to war in Iraq or Afghanistan when they hear the words, “fight and win.” I admit I thought the same thing at first. But after I thought about it a few days, it was like the old cliché of a light going on. Fight and win isn’t just for those who signed the dotted line and joined the military. Fight and win goes deeper than that. What about the families we leave behind for 60-, 90- or 120-day deployments? How do they...

It's not just you: yesterday really was depressing By Catriona Davies (Filed: 24/01/2006) If you woke up yesterday feeling gloomy and found that, from then on, things got worse, there may be an explanation. According to one academic's calculations, yesterday was the most depressing day of the year. Cliff Arnall, a psychologist at Cardiff University who devised the formula, blamed a combination of debts, failed New Year's resolutions, the cold, grey weather and the length of time since Christmas. "For most people, there's a realisation by the third week of January that spending on sales items needs to be stopped...

Attractive women are more than just a pretty face By Roger Highfield, Science Editor (Filed: 02/11/2005) The more fertile a woman, the more attractive she is to men, scientists claim today. For many years, scientists believed that when lovers gaze at each other they are merely using facial clues - large eyes, small nose, large lips and so on - to check that their prospective mate has high "fitness" and can efficiently pass their genes to the next generation. War prisoner believes atomic bomb saved his life By DAVID LEVINSKY Burlington County Times Thomas Calderone believes the atomic bomb saved his life. Sixty years ago today, the Pemberton Township man was in a Japanese prisoner of war camp wondering how he would survive a fourth year of daily work and few rations when word was received that Japanese forces had surrendered. Calderone's lasting memory of the day - dubbed V-J Day for "victory over Japan" - was simply the Japanese guards telling the prisoners, "no more work." "We didn't understand why," Calderone said last week. "We didn't understand a...

WILL SUICIDE BOMBERS OBTAIN HEAVEN? Those who seek to terrorize others by killing themselves along with innocent people can never be assured of reaching Heaven. Among those in the Sacred Scriptures who committed suicide is Judas. And through the Word of God we know he lost his soul: “And Satan entered into Judas, who was surnamed Iscariot, one of the twelve” (Luke 22:3). “And he indeed hath possessed a field of the reward of iniquity, and being hanged (Judas hung himself), burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out....So that the field is called....’The field of blood‘”...

Just do nothing, EU officials told (but be sure to fill in form to say you've done it) By Justin Stares in Brussels (Filed: 03/07/2005) "If in doubt, do nothing" might seem like common sense to most people, but in Brussels it has just become official policy. But even doing nothing will entail some paperwork. Conscious of its reputation for unnecessary meddling, the European Commission has issued staff with guidelines advising them that the status quo could be the best option. Under a heading "To regulate or not to regulate, that is the question", commission bureaucrats are told that when...

Kerry cautious on probing `Downing Street Memo' By Noelle Straub Monday, June 20, 2005 - Updated: 10:36 AM EST WASHINGTON - Walking a tightrope on a politically charged issue, Sen. John F. Kerry vowed weeks ago to raise the controversial ``Downing Street Memo'' as an issue in Washington, but has since publicly held his tongue on the matter. Instead, Kerry has been enlisting other senators to sign onto a letter to the Senate Intelligence Committee seeking answers about the memo, aides said. The memo contained minutes of a 2002 meeting in which British officials told Prime Minister Tony Blair they...

I did it!!! For years I have been tying to post an article during normal freeping hours that nobody would comment on for over an hour. It is quite a challenge really. FR has a wide range of interests, and if an article is too weird, then people will comment on its weirdness. Anyway, every few weeks I have been trying to find an article just so totally boring that there would be no reason for anyone to comment on it, and at the same time not be too weird as to merit a comment based on its weirdness. I...

A farewell to Dan Poker by Nathan Carleton March 03, 2005 Just one more week. Just one more week until Dan Rather “retires” from CBS News’s anchor chair and starts filing reports for 60 Minutes. Just one more week until a 24-year run of biased, misleading, politicized TV journalism comes to an end. As Dan’s colleagues give him a hero’s sendoff, remember the rest of the story: 6/17/87: On CBS’s Evening News, Rather says viewers are wrong in believing the Soviet people want freedom. “Despite what many Americans think,” he says, “most Soviets do not yearn for capitalism or Western-style...

Democrats launch counter-Bush road trip By Associated Press Thursday, March 3, 2005 WASHINGTON - The Democrats' battle for the hearts and minds - and wallets - of voters worried about Social Security hits the road Friday, with its first stop at a New York City college. On the same day President Bush visits Westfield, N.J., to tout his plan for personal accounts within Social Security, Senate Democrats will bring their opposing effort to Pace University. The Pace event, featuring former presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry and New York's two senators, Charles Schumer and Hillary Rodham Clinton, kicks off a swing...
