These gnome houses in hollowed out logs were one of the first along the east end of Fisherman's Trail in Little Buffalo State Park. Park management has evicted the gnomes. As Steve Hoke was leaving Little Buffalo State Park on Monday after removing 38 gnome homes, he met a man and his daughter. The 7-year-old girl had just finished her last chemo treatment. Her dad asked what she wanted to do – she said she wanted to see in person the gnome houses that she had seen on Facebook. Hoke was pulling a garden wagon full of the 38 gnome...

So I was watching a movie with my kids (10 and 13) the other day and was thinking about how different the media is that they consume than from the stuff I was raised on. I would like to get them interested in older movies with positive messages. Which John Wayne and which WWII movies are your favorites and which would think would grab kids' attention? I'm thinking "The Cowboys" would be good, but what else would everyone suggest?

This one is a bit surreal. Footage from a Donald Trump rally has gone massively viral, but not because of yet another bombastic and inflammatory comment from the Republican candidate. This time, the center of attention is a song and dance routine put on by the so-called "USA Freedom Kids" during a rally that's as frightening as it is unintentionally hilarious. A casual look at the lyrics, which are set against a MIDI-quality remix to the jingoistic "Over There" that was employed for recruitment in the early 20th century, show a tin ear for lyrics and a bizarrely confrontational worldview...

It was the most awkward and divisive of questions that I would ask of other parents, usually new acquaintances, but also of old friends. We’d be on the phone, discussing our young children, laughing, and the subject of play dates would come up. The other mom might say, “Can Chloe come over here tomorrow to play with Maddie?†I would ask, “Do you keep guns in your house?†Always it would lead to the most illuminating of answers, whether yes or no. If the response was negative, the parent would answer immediately, following up with something like, “No, never. We...

It all goes downhill after 30 — at least when it comes to happiness. “Adults over 30 are less happy than their predecessors,†concludes a study published online Thursday in the journal Social Psychology and Personality Science, which examined happiness data from more than 50,000 adults, gleaned from the General Social Survey, carried out by NORC at the University of Chicago, a nonpartisan, independent research organization, which has collected information about American adults since 1972. From 2010 to 2014, adults over 30 had an average happiness score of just 2.18, compared with 2.24 a decade ago. That’s significant considering happiness...

A Democratic Hispanic political action committee that is protesting Donald Trump's "Saturday Night Live" appearance Thursday defended a video featuring young Latino children slamming the Republican presidential candidate in profane tirades for his views on illegal immigrants.

Look out Trump! Latino kids born in the USA have got something to say as they hilariously let loose on Trump pounding his anti-Latino racism point-by-point like a piñata. Some will find what they say shocking (F-bombs ahead) but there's no denying the math that you can't win the White House without the brown vote. The first video from DeportRacism.com, an online movement to fight anti-Latino racism in the 2016 election. Get involved and get a "Deport Racism 2016" T-shirt to support the #DeportRacism2016 movement at DeportRacism2016.com

The U.S. Secret Service ordered hundreds of parents and their cancer-stricken children out of Lafayette Square on Saturday night, barricading the park for at least two hours and disrupting the group’s plans for a candlelight vigil to raise awareness of and research funding for childhood cancer, participants said. Some of the parents and children expressed hurt and disappointment that the Secret Service and Park Police, citing security precautions, virtually shut down part of a two-day event called CureFest for Childhood Cancer.

The problem with young people today is that they think they know everything. When I was a lad, young people were ignorant – and we were smart enough to know it. We understood that wisdom came with experience, maturity and age. Knowledge was the purview of the educated, the wealthy and the gainfully employed, not feckless pinheads with an over-inflated sense of self-worth and Wikipedia book marked on their laptops. In my day young people didn’t presume to understand important issues let alone have an opinion on them. If my old dad told me the piano teacher from down the...

It’s “No lemonade for you!” in East Hampton, where a sourpuss neighbor put the squeeze on the drink stand Jerry Seinfeld and his family had set up for charity, resulting in this goofy “arrest.” The roadside business was selling cold drinks on hot days to benefit the group Baby Buggy, before it was shut down for violating a village prohibition on peddling. “Lemonade dreams crushed by local neighbor but not before raising lots of money for @loverecycled. Thanks to all of our customers and big tippers!” Seinfeld’s wife, Jessica, wrote on Instagram. An accompanying photo shows Jerry, son Julian and...

The Batmobile pulled into a gas station Sunday night and, as usual, the children who spotted it gawked. Lenny B. Robinson was used to that. The Maryland man, better known as the Route 29 Batman, had for years dressed as the Caped Crusader and driven his custom-made car to deliver moments of happiness and distraction to hundreds of sick children at area hospitals. His costume stored in the Batmobile but his alter ego never entirely switched off, Robinson gave the kids at the gas station some superhero paraphernalia before driving off. Minutes later, Robinson pulled over with engine trouble on...

Fox held the 17th annual Teen Choice Awards on Sunday, but parts of the show seemed a little too grown up for the teen audience. "I'm glad to meet you. Turn up, girl, blow the speaker yeah, think about it now blow the speaker," Flo Rida rapped at the Teen Choice Awards.
