A military policeman from Rosemount has died in an attack in Afghanistan. The Department of Defense says Spc. Andrew C. Wilfahrt died Sunday when insurgents attacked his unit in Kandahar province using a homemade bomb. The 31-year-old Wilfahrt was assigned to a military police battalion based in Hawaii. He enlisted in the Army in January 2009 and was deployed to Afghanistan last July. Principal John Wollersheim says Wilfahrt graduated from Rosemount High School in 1997.

A 265-pound Queens man was arrested by the ASPCA Friday for fatally beating his 8-pound Chihuahua. The tiny pooch, named Spotye, was so severely injured he had to be euthanized. Jerry Melendez, 33, was charged with felony animal cruelty after ASPCA investigators determined the pup suffered a fractured skull caused by blunt force impact and a hemorrhage in his left eye. A necropsy also showed the dog had blood in his abdominal cavity. Green River Killer Gary Ridgway is facing his 49th murder charge for the death of a woman whose skull was found by teenagers in a ravine, 28 years after she went missing. Ridgway, 61, is already serving 48 consecutive life sentences after being jailed in 2003 for a strangling spree which terrorised Seattle and its northern suburbs in the early 1980s. He once said he killed so many women he could not keep track of them all. ZABUL, Afghanistan (Jan. 21, 2011) — Members of the Afghan National Police and U.S. Navy SEALs killed eight insurgents Jan. 19 in Arghandab district, Zabul province. The Afghan-led force was conducting a routine patrol to address villager’s concerns regarding security in this remote region of the country when they were engaged by an insurgent force.
