An L.A. triple-murder suspect was tried in China, and his case could open the door for similar prosecutionsWalt Teague had given up hope of making an arrest in the Koreatown triple murder. The suspect, Tai Zhi Cui, had fled Los Angeles for his native China, which has no extradition treaty with the United States. If Chinese police would confirm that Cui was indeed in China, Teague could at least close the almost decade-old case. In a cavernous room off Tiananmen Square, he met with nearly two dozen Chinese police officials. The highest-ranking officer then made an unexpected offer to Teague,...

The presenters were Fr. Chris Ponnet (pictured above), Arthur Fitzmaurice, and Ish Ruiz. Ponnet was ordained in 1983 and serves as "spiritual director" for the Archdiocese's Catholic Ministry with Lesbian and Gay Persons (CMLGP). Los Angeles is not Latin America. Such a statement should be as uncontroversial as a western hemisphere map. But in L.A., conventional wisdom runs the other way.

Los Angeles could join New York City and other California cities in a lawsuit targeting Exxon Mobil for supposedly contributing to global warming and rising sea levels. Two Los Angeles city council members want the city to use the courts to fleece fossil-fuel producers to mitigate the effects of global warming. They are hoping to join the likes of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who announced earlier this month that his city will take Exxon to court.

Under the leadership of the ultraliberal Cardinal Robert Mahoney, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles’ annual Religious Education Congress  – billed as the biggest annual gathering of Catholics in the country – gained a reputation for functioning as a platform for dissidents who seek to undermine Catholic doctrine on life and family issues. When Mahoney left office in 2011 in disgrace following revelations of his protection of priests accused of child sex abuse, he was replaced by Archbishop José Gomez, a former Opus Dei priest perceived as a conservative. Expectations were high that Gomez’s administration would lead to a reversal of...

A special meeting of the Vermilion Parish School Board got a bit heated last night and a concerned educator ended up in handcuffs. Deyshia Hargrave, an English language arts teacher at Rene Rost Middle School in Kaplan, got up to address the board during the public comments portion of the meeting to discuss teacher salaries and pay raises. Her big concern was that while teachers were asked to do more for little to no extra pay, the board was voting to increase the salary of current superintendent Jerome Puyau. However, Hargrave was ruled out of order by board president Anthony...

Thousands of protesters are expected to gather in downtown Los Angeles Saturday for a march against President Donald Trump. But there has yet to be any kind of public demonstration against sexual harassment and sexual assault in Hollywood, several weeks into a scandal that has implicated some of L.A.’s most powerful personalities — many of whom are also among the Democratic Party’s biggest backers. The L.A. demonstrations are organized by a group called Refuse Fascism, which has defended Antifa’s use of violence, calling it self-defense against violence from the far right. And yet nothing is being done to protest on...

California pension worries most often focus on CalPERS and CalSTRS, the state’s two multi-employer behemoths. But the state has many other underfunded plans, and these city and county systems pose significant challenges for governments that contribute to them. The City of Los Angeles faces the largest municipal pension funding gap, measured in absolute dollar terms. According to the city’s 2016 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, Los Angeles’ Net Pension Liability totaled $8.2 billion. Curiously, this number does not appear on the city’s government-wide balance sheet (called a Statement of Net Position). Instead, the $8.2 billion is reported as part of LA’s...

About 70% of Los Angeles high school graduates enroll in two- or four-year colleges, but only 25% graduate within six years. ... it’s hard to assess recent district efforts that could be seen as pushing in different directions. On one hand, the district is touting higher standards: a high school graduation requirement that all students pass the courses necessary for applying to a four-year state college. On the other hand, the district requires a grade of D only in these classes and the colleges require a C or better to apply. The district also offers an array of “credit recovery”...
