COLUMBUS, Neb. (AP) - Officials say nearly 300 Columbus jobs will be lost with the closing of the Apogee Retail call center. The Columbus Telegram reports (http://bit.ly/1Ikppdx ) that the company announced the closing on Tuesday, after workers were informed. The closing is planned for Oct. 4. U.S. job cuts soared to a nearly four-year high in July as the military announced plans to reduce troop and civilian workforce payrolls, according to outplacement consultancy Challenger, Gray & Christmas. The Russian president signed a decree two weeks ago that reduced the number of full-time employees in the interior ministry of Russia by about 10% — or 110,000 people. Three coal-fired power plants in West Virginia have shut down operations. Media outlets report that Appalachian Power's Kanawha River Power Station at Glasgow, the Kammer Power Station near Moundsville and the Phillip Sporn Power Station at New Haven were closed Sunday.
