A Stanford University Ph.D. student named Rahinah Ibrahim was prevented from boarding a flight at San Francisco International Airport in 2005, and was handcuffed and detained by the police. Ultimately, she was allowed to fly to Malaysia, her home country, but she has been unable to return to the United States because the State Department revoked her student visa. Summation: The woman's eldest daughter, who was born in the U.S. and is a U.S. citizen, was called as a witness for the trial. Unfortunately, she mysteriously found herself on the no-fly list as well, and wasn't able to board a...

Dry cleaner wins missing pants case By LUBNA TAKRURI, Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON - A judge ruled Monday in favor of a dry cleaner that was sued for $54 million over a missing pair of pants. The owners of Custom Cleaners did not violate the city's consumer protection law by failing to live up to Roy L. Pearson's expectations of the "Satisfaction Guaranteed" sign once displayed in the store window, District of Columbia Superior Court Judge Judith Bartnoff ruled. "A reasonable consumer would not interpret 'Satisfaction Guaranteed' to mean that a merchant is required to satisfy a customer's unreasonable demands"...
  • Lawyer bitten by bed bugs sues leading London hotel

A New York lawyer is suing a leading London hotel after he and his wife were attacked by bed bugs. Sidney Bluming and his wife Cynthia are seeking several million dollars in damages from the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group in the action filed at the US District Court, Manhattan. The couple claim they suffered hundreds of bites that left their skin red, swollen and itchy during a five-day stay at the Hyde Park hotel last May. They also say the bugs infested their luggage, which led to further problems in their apartment when they returned home. Mrs Bluming claims the...

I am writing a college essay for an English Composition class. The assignment is an argument essay with the topic of adult punishment for minors who commit violent crimes. My stance on the subject is, indeed adult time for adult crime. I am looking for a selected group that would be known to be against adult punishment for minors in violent crimes. Does anyone have any suggestions? Also, do you know who is it that determines the case be tried in adult or juvinile court?

Just one day after his installation, the new archbishop of Boston has already started making changes. Newscenter 5's Steve Sbraccia reported that on Thursday, Archbishop Sean P. O'Malley named Boston attorney Thomas Hannigan as lead counsel for the archdiocese. Hannigan will handle the more than 500 sex abuse lawsuits brought by those who claim priests sexually abused them. Hannigan's work is no stranger to O'Malley, who helped him settle cases involving the Rev. James Porter a decade ago, when O'Malley was head of the Fall River Diocese. In a statement released on Thursday, O'Malley praised Hannigan. "It is my hope...

"Divine Revelation" Unlikely to Influence Court BY Stephen Hunt Wednesday March 19, 2003 THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE Brian David Mitchell and Wanda Barzee may believe God ordered them to kidnap Elizabeth Smart, but legal experts say divine revelation will be little help to them in the courtroom. "Being egged on by another is not a defense," said Assistant Utah Attorney General Michael Wims. "It is not a defense that God urged them to do it." Mitchell, 49, and Barzee, 57, were charged Tuesday in 3rd District Court with aggravated kidnapping and five other felonies in connection with the June...
