Could Jim Leyland be any different from Colin Kaepernick? Last night, Team USA dominated Puerto Rico 8-0 to win the World Baseball Championship for the first time. Leyland, 72, the Hall of Fame-bound manager and baseball lifer who came out of retirement to manage the U.S. team got emotional in a post-game interview.

A woman who was allegedly part of an internet hate campaign against the family of Madeleine McCann has been found dead in a hotel. Brenda Leyland, from Burton Overy, Leicestershire, was accused of being one of the so-called "trolls" directing abusive messages at the McCanns. Her body was found days after she was confronted outside her home by a Sky News reporter.

If there's anyone who should be familiar with the kind of throwback, old-school baseball Cole Hamels discussed after intentionally hitting Nationals rookie Bryce Harper with a pitch Sunday night, it's Tigers manager Jim Leyland. Leyland, a baseball lifer, has managed in 3,203 games since 1986 -- when Hamels was just 3. But even Leyland's joining the chorus of critics displeased by Hamels' actions. During his regular pregame radio show Monday night, he characterized Hamels' five-game suspension as being "way too light," and, according to MLB.com, suggested 15 games would have been more appropriate.

CLAIRE BERLINSKI Government Motors 1975 America should learn from Britain’s disastrous takeover of its biggest auto company. PETER MARLOW/MAGNUM PHOTOS Striking became a way of life for British Leyland autoworkers during the seventies. After the Second World War, the United Kingdom’s newly elected Labour government resolved to build of Britain a New Jerusalem. It nationalized the commanding heights of the economy and inaugurated the cradle-to-grave welfare state. By the 1970s, the UK faced an economic crisis unrivaled since the Great Depression. Shabby and hopeless, Britain had become, in Henry Kissinger’s words, a “tragedy” of a nation, reduced to “begging, borrowing,...
  • Motown Bailout - Have they thought this through? (yes, vanity)

Please pardon the shameless vanity, I just wanted to raise a minor, technical point with the "big-3" auto bailout proposal. Perhaps some astute Freeper can clarify? If we lend $15-25B to the little-3, does this consitute a subsidy to the companies since it is, by definition, on terms superior to those available in the free market?.If we thus subsidize certain auto manufacturers does this expose these companies and our Govt to all manner of actions under the WTO, GATT etc.? Will the rest of the world's auto companies feel justified in grabbing their subsidy or otherwise "level the playing field"?. Great...

DETROIT -- Ever notice how the media makes head coaches or managers larger than life in the post-season? Anything you read or hear over the next week about Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland is well deserved and then some. You could bring in ESPN's volatile Dick Vitale for a comment. Vitale rants and raves about each coach in an NCAA hoops regional game and does the same in the nightcap of the doubleheader. Well, you could roll the praise for all four of those coaches together and it would be fitting for Leyland, for what he achieved this year. Leyland...
