... When it incorporated in 1947, this village, called Lincoln Heights, was the first primarily black self-governing community north of the Mason-Dixon line. (Today, the city has one of the highest concentrations of African American residents in the state of Ohio—according to the Census, 95.5 percent.) Lincoln Heights thrived for a while, producing poet Nikki Giovanni, songwriters the Isley Brothers (who wrote “Twist and Shout”), and scholar Carl Westmoreland, who now helps run the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. Hundreds of residents worked at the nearby Wright Aeronautical Plant, manufacturing the B-29 bomber, and at a chemical plant a few...

Four suspects have been arrested after a bizarre, early-morning home invasion in Lincoln Heights on Saturday that ended with a resident tying up two of the armed men. The suspects, armed with a shotgun and three handguns, allegedly entered a house on the 2600 block of Alta Street in Lincoln Heights, said Officer Norma Eisenman of the Los Angeles Police Department. The resident, who was the only person home at the time, saw the suspects on a home surveillance system and called 911 about 2:40 a.m., she said. As police and SWAT units arrived, one suspect was seen fleeing the...

Organizers of an AIDS memorial are asking the city Human Relations Commission to mediate a meeting of the group and some Lincoln Heights residents who allegedly shouted anti-gay sentiments at a recent meeting and have passed out fliers saying that the park memorial is not the way children should learn about the disease. The mostly publicly funded project, which would cost about $500,000, was approved last month by the Recreation and Parks Commission. The City Council is tentatively scheduled to take up the issue Wednesday. The $344,000 appropriation from the state general fund requires that it be constructed and that...
