My 82 year old mother is buying a new computer. I found a cheap system (179.00) from a reliable retailer (Fryes) It has 1.6gherz Athlon motherboard, 128mb of ram, cd, 56modem and 40gig harddrive, yada, yada, yada--but it comes with Lindows installed. see url. Is there any problem with reformatting and putting XP on the system? That's the question. No discussion of the evils of Microsoft, the Mac, or Lindows, or why I need another whizbang, please.

Microsoft has agreed to pay Linux vendor, Lindows, $US20 million to end a two-and-a-half-year legal battle over the Lindows name, which Microsoft argues is too close to its Windows trademark. As part of the settlement, Lindows agreed to change its legal name to Linspire by September 14 and cease all use of the Lindows name in its products. The company adopted the Linspire name for most of its products sold globally and its website in April after a legal defeat in Europe. Additionally, Lindows will hand over several Internet domain names it registered, including lindows.org and lindowsos.com. However, the...

At the end of the Interview the Lindows President gives a coupon code for a free copy of Lindows. Q. What do you consider do be your biggest challenge? Educating people about the Linux choice for their desktop/laptop. Getting people to try something new takes a lot of work, time and energy. The only hope Microsoft has, is that the monopoly they have had extends to the minds of the consumer. If we can get people to be open minded enough to give Linux a try, we know many will never go back. I didn't know what Linux was a...

You might know Lindows as the company behind an aggressively marketed OS based on Linux and KDE. Indeed, LindowsOS is shipped on certain Wal-Mart PC offerings and the company has won huge contracts for LindowsOS machine deployments. You might also know Lindows as a sponsor of the ever popular KDE-Look.org community site. Well, Lindows was in the Netherlands on Dec 8th to show its support in a situation where a certain large software powerhouse has apparently been attempting to intimidate local LindowsOS resellers. Sure enough, KDE Dot News took the chance to meet Michael Robertson for an interview and chat...

HP-Lindows tussle clouds desktop Linux show By Stephen Shankland Special to ZDNet News January 21, 2003, 4:56 AM PT Hewlett-Packard and other participants have withdrawn from a February conference on the use of Linux on desktop computers, casting a shadow on the show's debut. At the root of the spat are objections to the main sponsor's prominence in the Desktop Linux Summit. News site DesktopLinux.com had been a sponsor, and open-source advocate Bruce Perens was scheduled to deliver the show's opening keynote speech. But both pulled out after the conference's sponsor and organizer Lindows decided its chief executive, Michael...

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. won't cut the price on its Windows operating system to compete with a $199 personal computer that runs rival operating software, the No. 1 software company's CEO said Wednesday. Walmart.com, the online shopping site of the nation's largest retailer Wal-Mart Inc., has been selling a $199 personal computer -- monitor and modem not included -- that runs the Lindows operating system. LindowsOS, from San Diego, California-based Lindows.com, is based on the Linux operating system, which is a free, open-source operating system that is increasingly being used by large corporations for back-end systems....

It's got a get out of jail free card By Arron Rouse: Thursday 18 July 2002, 11:17 THE NEWS that Microsoft intends to ditch backwards compatibility (here), with its Windows XP replacement, Longhorn, has come as a surprise to many. Some industry pundits have expressed serious doubts about the idea. Doubts and surprise are the last thing you need -- this is a textbook Microsoft move. To get a better idea of why Microsoft would consider a course change as bold as this you need to consider the problems it is facing at the moment. There are several major issues...

Wal-Mart's Web Site Sells Computers Without Windows SoftwareBy Caryn Rousseau Associated Press WriterPublished: Jul 16, 2002 LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Saying it wants to offer its customers more options, Wal-Mart's online shopping site has started selling inexpensive computers without the Microsoft Windows operating system. "We're simply offering this to a specific niche looking for this specific operating system," Walmart.com spokeswoman Cynthia Lin said Tuesday. "It's about extending more choices to our customers." Instead of the popular Microsoft Windows software, the Wal-Mart computers come loaded with Lindows, a Linux operating systems company based in San Diego. Lindows says the operating...

Ambitious Lindows tries to put a friendly face on Linux By Kristi Heim July 5, 2002 Mercury News • Tech Test Drive: Lindows makes Windows look good If Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates is Goliath, Michael Robertson wants to be David. He hopes, at least, to knock some chinks in Gates' armor by loosening Microsoft's stranglehold on the market for PC desktop operating systems. This time, as founder and CEO of San Diego start-up Lindows.com, he's aiming at Windows, the...

Remember when every house had just one television? Today, it's not uncommon for families to have multiple televisions. The personal computer is poised to experience the same phenomenon. The tipping point will be when a personal computer is cheaper than the desk it sits on. Then we'll see PCs appearing in every room of every house and employees will have more than one computer on their desk. As prices fall, PCs are moving from one per person (or per family) big-ticket items to common appliances. They're becoming commodities that can be dedicated to a task or a location. Tomorrow's teenager...

Judge rules Lindows can keep its name for now By Kim Peterson STAFF WRITER March 16, 2002 Lindows.com can keep its name for now, but the San Diego company isn't in the clear yet. A federal judge in Seattle has denied a request by software giant Microsoft to stop Lindows from using its name. The issue could move to a trial later this year, however. Microsoft sued Lindows over its name in December. Lindows is capitalizing on the reputation of the Windows brand, the suit said, and its name is confusingly similar to that of the Windows operating system. Lindows,...
