  • Federal Judge To Wisconsin: You Know 'Traditional' Marriage Was Polygamy, Right?

    Huffington post ^ | 6/6/14 | Ryan J. Reilly
WASHINGTON -- The federal judge who struck down Wisconsin's gay marriage ban thinks state officials have a thing or two to learn about the history of marriage as a social institution. In defending their same-sex marriage ban, state officials claimed that "virtually all cultures through time" have recognized marriage "as the union of an opposite-sex couple." But as U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb wrote in her 88-page ruling on Friday, that's simply not true. "As an initial matter, defendants and amici have overstated their argument. Throughout history, the most 'traditional' form of marriage has not been between one man and...

An attorney for the association that oversees regional transportation projects said in a letter to Barker last month that she must "immediately cease performing cartwheels." Agency spokeswoman Kelly Taft tells The Associated Press that Barker's cartwheels are disruptive and a public safety liability.

Gwyneth Paltrow is causing controversy again with a statement on her lifestyle website Goop about her belief that water might have feelings. The 41-year-old actress, who recently split from her husband Chris Martin, endorsed the work of Japanese doctor Masuru Emoto, who has published several books on the theory that human consciousness can change the structure of water. "I have long had Dr. Emoto's coffee table book on how negativity changes the structure of water," Paltrow wrote on her blog. "How the molecules behave differently depending on the words or music being expressed around it."

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., has served in the U.S. Senate for less than two years, but her message of economic populism and boosting the middle class has catapulted her to stardom with Democrats nationwide. In her new book, "A Fighting Chance," Warren reflects on growing up in a middle-class family in Oklahoma and shares how that upbringing shaped her mission to help struggling middle-class families. “I wrote this book out of gratitude. I am the daughter of someone who ended up as a maintenance man, a woman who worked a minimum-wage job at Sears. And I ended up in the...

November 22, 2013, is the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The true story of JFK's murder has never been officially admitted, although the conclusion that JFK was murdered by a plot involving the Secret Service, the CIA and the Joint Chiefs of Staff has been well established by years of research, such as that provided by James W. Douglass in his book, JFK And The Unspeakable, published by Simon & Schuster in 2008. Ignore Douglass's interest in the Trappist monk Thomas Merton and Merton's prediction and focus on the heavily documented research that Douglass provides....

In an interview with Playboy magazine, Sanders targets coal and oil companies who he says have outsized influence over lawmakers on Capitol Hill. “Big business is willing to destroy the planet for short-term profits,” Sanders said. “And because of their power over the political process, you hear a deafening silence in the U.S. Congress and in other bodies around the world about the severity of the problem. Ann Coulter needs to stop reading the liberal media because she’s becoming more like them every day (h/t: Daily Caller): On the day that Margaret Thatcher passes, Coulter goes after Sarah Palin by saying that Thatcher wanted to teach Palin ‘how to speak proper English’ but Palin refused to meet with her. Then in 2010, she says, when Palin was promoting ‘some reality show or something’ and went to England and wanted to visit Thatcher, that Thatcher snubbed her and refused to meet with Palin. I don’t know about Thatcher wanting to ‘teach’ Palin ‘how to speak proper English’, but...

One such source tells Mediaite, among other things, that Olbermann went through 8 different car services (he doesn’t drive), and complained to the network that some of the drivers “smelled,” and “talked to him,” the latter detail echoing a leak that once dogged then-Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain. TORONTO (Reuters) - Canada's dollar strengthened to one-for-one footing with the U.S. currency on Tuesday for the first time since July 2008, powered by rising commodity prices and an economic rebound investors expect will soon trigger rate hikes. The Canadian dollar climbed as high as C$0.9988 to the U.S. dollar, or US$1.0012, hopping the key psychological level after a string of firmer U.S. economic data helped fuel investor demand for commodity-linked currencies. The currency has risen more than 5 percent against the U.S. dollar so far this year after gaining almost 16 percent in 2009. The currency's rise has been...

According to Olbermann's logic, since 45,000 people a year die from a lack of health insurance and Boortz is against the current “reform” of health care,  Boortz therefore approves of the death of 45,000 Americans. While that is flawed logic, let’s use it.

At least John McCain is back to his old self. This assumes, of course, at some point he wasn't.Believe me, he was. (See the entire 2008 campaign). He's back to being the crotchety old Republicrat spitfire, Mac the Mav.That reach-across-the-aisle, strolling-down-the-median joie de vivre he possesses (and can beckon at will) is throttling up for the new administration.Goodie gumdrops.Since the time is just about right for McCain to ride the wave of ascendancy back into the good graces of the media (who, you'll recall, once upon a time, had rockets in their pockets for him when he was still their beloved...

The cameras focused on a tearful Jesse Jackson, and the reporters seemed more interested in talking to Spike Lee, Brad Pitt and Oprah. But at Chicago’s Grant Park, when President-elect Barack Obama declared “Change has come to America,” there was another face in the crowd that Rhode Islanders would have recognized. Former U.S. Sen. Lincoln D. Chafee, the Republican-turned-independent who campaigned for Obama, was about 20 feet from the side of the stage. Chafee and his wife, Stephanie, waved to Obama’s brother-in-law, Craig Robinson, and his wife and two children. The Robinsons, who were on stage with Obama, used to...

Relax, people. McCain did fine. Re: Ayers. If McCain flogs that too enthusiastically he’s screwed. Obama already won a couple of news cycles last week when he painted McCain as unconcerned about the economy and wanting to debate something that happened 40 years ago.

McCain has thrown the election. It is clear now with his choice for Vice President that he has no desire to win in November. Why else would he chose an inexperienced woman, whose only apparent qualification is that she won a beauty pageant in the 1980s? Why else would he refuse to say Barack Hussein Obama’s middle name? Why else would he run an ad praising Obama and congratulating him for winning the nomination? If McCain had chosen Mitt Romney, a man with real leadership ability, real charisma, and real experience, he might have stood a chance. He could have...

Former Democratic candidate Mike Gravel says President George W. Bush should be taken to The Hague for war crimes rather than being impeached. In a Monday video conference with Press TV, the former Alaska senator said President Bush does not 'deserve' to be impeached for invading Afghanistan and Iraq, which has resulted in the loss of 'millions of lives'. "An Impeachment just means you would only take away his (Bush's) presidency. Well, he is almost done (with) his presidency. What really needs to happen is that these people have to be held accountable for the crimes they have committed," the...

Robert Redford has been fighting on behalf of the environment for more than 30 years. From producing documentary films about solar power to lobbying Congress, his work has been both in the field and inside the Beltway. These days, he has a new venue for environmental activism: slam poetry. Sponsored by Redford's Sundance Preserve, in collaboration with Youth Speaks, a nonprofit that presents spoken-word performances, the Academy Award-winning actor is getting his message out in rhyme. Redford spoke with Lauren Whitehead, associate director of Youth Speaks, and Simone Crew, slam poet and participant in "Brave New Voices: Youth Speaks! 11th...

I'd had a neat idea for a bumber sticker or maybe just a nice net graphic for the coming post-convention campaign season. It would be "Obama 2008" and a play on his current bumper sticker. The difference is that the rainbow in the "O" would be replaced with a red circle with the islamic crescent and star. All of the lettering would be red on a white background so it would be inexpensive to produce (red ink on white vinyl). Any graphic artists in the house want to give this a whirl? Also, I'd have posted this in Vanity but...

Kucinich calls for Bush impeachmentUpdated: Jan 23, 2008 03:52 PM CST NATIONAL (NBC) - Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich may get excluded from Democratic presidential debates, but he's voicing his opinion on the House floor. On Wednesday, Kucinich announced he'll be filing articles of impeachment against President Bush on Monday. That's the same day of the president's State of the Union address. The announcement comes as Kucinich railed the President and Vice President for how they have handled the war in Iraq. In his lengthy statement, the Ohio congressman said, "The President and Vice President lied and 4,000 of our soldiers...
