They've run off one public defender, been chastised by a new defense attorney and faced a threat of jail time by a judge. But the Friends of Crystal Mangum insist they're on her side, trying to protect her from a corrupt judicial system that they say aims to punish her for accusing three Duke lacrosse players of rape four years ago. Attorney General Roy Cooper concluded there was no rape, and former District Attorney Mike Nifong lost his law license over it, but the Friends believe Mangum's story. Now facing multiple felony charges related to a domestic violence call Feb....

DURHAM -- Crystal Gail Mangum is in police custody under $150,000 bond after court officials accused her of violating a condition of a previous pre-trial release agreement. An arrest warrant issued Wednesday charges Mangum with not complying with visitation hours detailed in her release agreement. Mani Dexter, the attorney representing her, is consulting with the district attorney's office with hopes of scheduling a hearing later today. Mangum, the discredited accuser in the Duke lacrosse case, was in court in July, on the day Duke University demolished the house where the 2006 lacrosse team held its infamous party, asking to be...

Sherrod Story False By Jeffrey Lord It isn't true. Shirley Sherrod's story in her now famous speech about the lynching of a relative is not true. The veracity and credibility of the onetime Agriculture Department bureaucrat at the center of the explosive controversy between the NAACP and conservative media activist Andrew Breitbart is now directly under challenge. By nine Justices of the United States Supreme Court. All of them dead. But first, it's important to say this. After Shirley Sherrod's firing I wrote a column congratulating Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack for removing her -- based on a viewing of the...

Reporters from media outlets around the country scrambled to provide day to-day updates on Crystal Gail Mangum, the accuser, and three Duke Lacrosse players; Reade Seligmann, Collin Finnerty and David Evans, the accused. At the Liestoppers forum, Walt-in-Durham has a detailed rundown of Crystal Mangum’s appearance tonight at UNC. As I have noted previously, it is mindboggling that an academic institution would invite someone who the state AG had, with copious evidence, deemed a false accuser and not allow her to be questioned on the myriad contradictions in her story. It is all the more mindboggling that the only reason for this refusal to allow questions was to prevent the false accuser from saying something that could open her to a lawsuit.I should note, in addition, that Mangum’s p.r. representative had similarly...

A Thousand Words Friday?s Herald-Sun contained an interview with the accuser?s father, Travis Mangum. According to reporter BriAnne Dopart, He still believes wholeheartedly his daughter was brutally raped and assaulted on the night of March 13, 2006?he recalls in vivid detail his daughter?s swollen eyes and cut arms. On several other occasions, Mangum has made such a claim, always mentioning the swollen eyes. Nor is he the only case-related figure to suggest that the accuser had readily detectable physical injuries. On March 16, when Sgt. Mark Gottlieb?s team conducted their first interview with the accuser, Officer R.A. Reid photographed the...

If the Duke Stripper is Crystal Gail Mangum (yes, it sounds like a stirpper name) as indicated by much of the internet, I would like to apologize in advance for revealing her identity - again - only if her story(s) is true. But, there are so many accounts of this incident and they are all contradictory. See a bio, criminal record and pictures of the Duke accuser at http://www.dilby.com/duke-lacrosse-team-accuser.htm.If you have not read the original accusations by the very tipsy Crystal on that fateful night, please, go to http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/0329061duke4.html where she describes and names three men, three invasive inputs, in...

With a motion bracelet strapped to her right ankle, Mangum, 31, held a press conference in front of a Savannah Avenue home this morning - where she is on house arrest - to defend herself against a February domestic violence arrest. Mangum was arrested at her Lincoln Street home after police alleged that during an argument with her ex-boyfriend, she set the apartment on fire and tried to kill her now ex-boyfriend while her three young children and two Durham police officers were in the home. “I don’t feel like I’m going to get the justice that I deserve through...

Wrath of a woman scorned? You betcha! It took Tonya Craft less than two weeks to sue her accusers - all of them - after she was acquitted on all counts of sexual molestation of children in her kindergarten class. Read about it here (The Chattanoogan, 5/24/10). I wrote about the acquittal here. Up until May 19, 2008, Tonya Craft had been a kindergarten teacher for years and with a spotless record. Teaching youngsters was her career, her life, and from all accounts, she was good at it. Not any more. That’s because on May 19, 2008, the accusations started....

A North Carolina judge has ordered three children to attend public schools this fall because the homeschooling their mother has provided over the last four years needs to be "challenged." The children, however, have tested above their grade levels – by as much as two years. The decision is raising eyebrows among homeschooling families, and one friend of the mother has launched a website to publicize the issue. The ruling was made by Judge Ned Mangum of Wake County, who was handling a divorce proceeding for Thomas and Venessa Mills.

In a sane world, Crystal Mangum's forthcoming memoir would contain just two words: "I'm sorry." Last Friday morning, I opened an email that contained a press release for a forthcoming book titled The Last Dance for Grace: The Crystal Mangum Story. Thinking it was an Internet hoax, I googled “Crystal Mangum” and found the story on WRAL.com. Sure enough, the infamous former stripper and prostitute, who falsely accused three Duke University lacrosse players of gang-raping and beating her in a bathroom, was writing her memoirs:....

There will never be justice in the Duke University lacrosse case until somebody slaps cuffs on the accuser, Crystal Gail Mangum. In April, North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper issued a report accompanying dismissal of the charges against each of the three lacrosse players accused - Dave Evans, Collin Finnerty and Reade Seligmann. Cooper didn't pull any punches. His findings went beyond the conventional "not guilty" to proclaim the men "innocent." Duke reached a private settlement with the men to ward off litigation. Too bad it reportedly protected 88 Duke faculty members who signed an ill-conceived petition last spring that...

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said that the Duke rape case fiasco was triggered by global climate change and that more such rapes may be on the horizon, in an article published Saturday. "The Duke rape case began as an ecological crisis, arising at least in part from climate change," Ban said in a Washington Post opinion column. UN statistics showed that rainfall had declined some 40 percent over the past two decades, he said, as a rise in temperatures disrupted the North Carolina rain season. "It is no accident that the rape in Duke erupted during the drought," Ban...
