THAILAND'S attempts to reassure world leaders the country will be safe from terror attacks during this month's APEC meeting have been dashed by reports that police have spent weeks looking for six contraband shoulder-fired missiles. Deputy Prime Minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh said intelligence officials had been "hunting them" for some time. The missiles were reported to have been smuggled into Thailand from Cambodia, where weapons trafficking is booming, about the time regional Jemaah Islamiah leader Hambali was arrested in Ayutthaya, north of Bangkok, in August. "Concerning the SAM (missiles), we have discussed it almost every week in meetings of intelligence agencies...

NEWARK -- A bail hearing for a man facing terrorism charges in an alleged missile-smuggling plot was postponed yesterday so that prosecutors could present a witness to bolster accusations that the defense claimed were vague. Meanwhile, defendant Hemant Lakhani will remain held without bail. The hearing was set to resume next Thursday. U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Christie said yesterday that Lakhani confessed after his arrest and is heard on more than 150 covertly recorded conversations and seen in some videotapes, at one point actually handling a missile he believed was sought by a terrorist group to shoot down a U.S....

TERRORISM experts believe it is only a matter of time until there's another attempt to destroy a commercial jet using shoulder-fired missiles, and warn that little can be done to defend airports. And they are not discounting the possibility of multiple strikes on different continents in an attempt to cripple an already wounded aviation industry. "I think it's been a low-hanging fruit for some time," said John Pike, a former defence analyst with the Federation of American Scientists and now director of US-based GlobalSecurity.org. "You do it on multiple airports on multiple continents and people won't fly." Security forces have...

Qantas is resisting pressure to install new systems to defend its fleet against terrorist missile attacks, throwing the responsibility for protecting its aircraft back onto government. The airline's CEO, Geoff Dixon, rejected suggestions that it deploy expensive decoy systems against surface-to-air missiles, saying these would would cost nearly $700 million to protect the international fleet alone. Mr Dixon also questioned the effectiveness of the systems and said the best way to deal with the missile threat would be for governments in Australia and the region to identify potential launch sites near airports. His comments came after the Prime Minister, John...

Testimony last Thursday at a closed-door hearing before the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee has revealed the growing worry of the threat that commercial planes face to shoulder fired surface to air missiles. According to Gary Burns, a spokesperson for the Committee’s Chairman John Mica (R-FL), the Bush Administration has become increasingly concerned about the threat civilian airliners face from the missiles that are in the hands of terrorists across the world, including al Qaeda. Last November, the Bush Administration convened a working group made up of intelligence, law enforcement and other experts, as well as members of the National...

Think the Unthinkable By Ralph Kinney Bennett 08/14/2003 The impossible can only be overborne by the unprecedented. -- Sir Ian Hamilton, Gallipoli Diary, 1920 The thing was done in a minute. It was September dusk and traffic was relatively light on the Grand Central Parkway as the black Honda Accord pulled over to the berm beside Planeview Park, at the end of LaGuardia Airport. As usual, a jetliner was in its final seconds before touching down on the runway. The whine of its engines could be heard above the rush of passing trucks and taxis. The sunroof on the Honda...

Terrorists trying to take down airliners with portable missiles has been a threat for a long time. Actually, over the last thirty years, it's been a reality. Some 29 commercial aircraft have been shot down by such missiles. However, the downed aircraft have been small, and most of these tragedies have taken place in Africa. The wars in Africa are the worst on the planet, so violent that most journalists avoid them. For three decades, this has kept the use of portable missiles against civilian aircraft off the front page. Larger airliners, like the Airbus's, and 757s, 767s and 747s,...
