In the upcoming December issue of Vanity Fair, Mary Mapes, the CBS News producer who lost her job after the disputed "60 Minutes II" Bush/National Guard report, writes, "I must answer the bloggers, the babblers and blabbers, and the true believers who have called me everything from 'feminazi' to an 'elitist liberal' to an 'idiot.' "If I was an idiot, it was for believing in a free press that is able to do its job without fear or favor. ...I didn't know that the attack on our story was going to be as effective as a brilliantly run national political...

"They are terrorists, toll collectors, purchasable at mere two taka," Swapan said while speaking at a puja mandap at Agailjhara on Wednesday. "Give them a mass beating if you find them publishing false and fabricated reports. If you fail, please inform me, I will take action against them," said the viprous tongued lawmaker. Credited for making quick money Swapan, a construction contractor, now owns three marine ships....

October 5, 2005 -- THE producer at the center of last year's "Memogate" scandal at CBS News says she was derailed by a vast right-wing conspiracy. The producer, Mary Mapes, is one of four CBS staffers fired last January in the wake of the scandal. She is convinced she was the victim of a group of loosely associated Internet bloggers "with a harsh political bent" who pounced on CBS News minutes after the airing of the now-infamous Texas Air National Guard story on "60 Minutes 2" in September 2004... "Within a few minutes, I was online visiting Websites I had...

After initially putting the first chapter of fired CBS producer Mary Mapes's book, Truth and Duty, on its web site, Amazon.com has apparently pulled the plug on the enterprise. Visitors to the online book retailer can no longer read the excerpt as it no longer shows up in listings for the print or audio versions of the book. Was the excerpt yanked because of the several objectively incorrect assertions it contained, and the subsequent blog firestorm their exposition caused? Only Amazon or Mapes's publisher, St. Martin’s Press knows for sure.

NEW YORK Howard Kurtz of The Washington Post might have a bigger scoop than he thought. In his online column this morning, as a final, almost throwaway item, he quoted from the first chapter of the forthcoming book by former CBS producer Mary Mapes that covers, among other things, her controversial experience with the Dan Rather/Bush/National Guard “60 Minutes” segment. Among the excerpts: "I was incredulous that the mainstream press -- a group I'd been a part of for nearly twenty-five years and thought I knew -- was falling for the blogs' critiques. I was shocked at the ferocity of...

Although a few of Mary Mapes divorced-from-reality quotes appeared in yesterday's EDITION of the DUmmie FUnnies, there was MUCH MORE of her MANY lies over at her book EXCERPT at Amazon.Com. Even though Mapes' book won't be appearing in public until next month, there are more than enough excerpts available on Amazon for her to completely humiliate herself before the public. Therefore this edition of the DUmmie FUnnies is dedicated to DUFUing Mary Mapes who although technically might not be a DUmmie (although I suspect that she might well be a DUmmie with an appropriate screen name like "HateBush")...

Mary Mapes, that is. Scott posted on her new book last night. We'll be deconstructing Ms. Mapes's revisionist history, bit by bit, over the weeks to come. For now, let's just pick out a point or two from her book's first chapter to ridicule. Ms. Mapes writes: Within a few minutes, I was online visiting Web sites I had never heard of before: Free Republic, Little Green Footballs, Power Line. They were hard-core, politically angry, hyperconservative sites loaded with vitriol about Dan Rather and CBS. Really? I did a simple site search, which you can easily reproduce, and found that...
  • Rather: Bush Guard Memo Story "Accurate," Never Proven Not So

In an interview with Marvin Kalb carried live by C-SPAN from the National Press Club on Monday night, Dan Rather made quite clear that he believes in the accuracy of his Bush National Guard story based on what everyone else realizes were fabricated memos. Rather argued that "one supporting pillar of the story, albeit an important one, one supporting pillar was brought into question. To this day no one has proven whether it was what it purported to be or not." Kalb pressed for clarification: "I believe you just said that you think the story is accurate?" Rather affirmed: "The...

hat tip: LGF Still Crazy After All These Years Or at least after one year. And maybe it isn't crazy--just, mentally challenged. Mary Mapes still doesn't get it: Within a few minutes, I was online visiting Web sites I had never heard of before: Free Republic, Little Green Footballs, Power Line. This is the first hint of her cluelessness. The fact that she'd never heard of these sites before shows how insulated she was. Free Republic has been around for many years now, and was instrumental in bringing out many of the Clinton scandals. It's one thing to say (as I'd...

Mary Mapes, the CBS News producer fired for her role in Memogate, has come out with her new book, Truth and Duty : The Press, the President, and the Privilege of Power. In it she mentions some encouraging words from Dan Rather, offering his support for her in her darkest hour. I knew I could count on Dan. In tough situations, he became “fightin’ Dan,” someone who told us all to “never back up, never back down, never give up, never give in.” I was glad to hear from him and reassured by his reaction to all of it. Dan...

July 7, 2005 -- FORMER CBS producer Mary Mapes, whose mishandling of the National Guard memo story cost Dan Rather his anchor's chair, has turned to her famed former colleague for help on her upcoming tell-all. (snip) Rather, who is still on staff with CBS, is "trying to make sure he comes out all right and is trying to help salvage his name through Mary's book," the outraged insider says. Rather is said to be furious with his new, marginalized position at "60 Minutes." "Dan has got nothing to do," the source elaborates. "No one at '60 Minutes' wants him...

Tracking Liberal Media Bias Since 1996 10:25am EDT, Monday May 23, 2005 (Vol. Ten; No. 91) Interviewed by Tina Brown in a session aired Sunday night on CNBC, Dan Rather praised Mary Mapes, the producer of the 60 Minutes story based on forged memos, as "a very good pro," and insisted that "she's the kind of professional that the audience should want in television." Asked by Brown if "after the flap over the National Guard story, do you feel inhibited?", Rather contended he's never "inhibited when it comes to news and trying to do fair-minded, accurate reporting on important stories."...

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - With thanks to two former colleagues who left CBS in the wake of a scandal, CBS News' Dan Rather accepted broadcast journalism's most prestigious honor on Monday for the "60 Minutes Wednesday" story that exposed the shocking conditions inside Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison. In one of his first public appearances since leaving the network's anchor chair in March, Rather and Mary Mapes received the Peabody Award at a luncheon at the Waldorf Astoria in Midtown Manhattan. Rather took pains to acknowledge Mapes and former CBS News senior vp Betsy West (who also attended the ceremony),...

The Anchoress claims to have gotten hold of excerpts from discredited CBS producer Mary Mapes’ book treatment; in this one Mapes equates “conservative bloggers” (is that supposed to be ... moi?) with a gang of rapists. (Hat tip: Thoughts Online.) “Conservative bloggers are part of the story. They have vilified me, mounted a ”wilding“ attack against me...we were, it seemed the first victims of a new kind of digital McCarthyism, which uses the same techniques as the old McCarthyism—rumors, slurs, false charges and ugly attacks—but now employs the Internet, talk radio and cable TV echo chamber to ricochet information around...

Mary Mapes' book proposal rips CBS News chief Andrew Heyward. Former "60 Minutes" producer Mary Mapes - who was sacked by CBS News over her role in last fall's President Bush-National Guard document flap - is returning the favor in an angry book to be published in November. Mapes received a mid-six-figure advance from St. Martin's Press for "The Other Side of the Story," her memoir of the controversy that knocked Dan Rather out of the anchor chair and ended four other careers at CBS News. According to Mapes' eye-popping book proposal, which I obtained yesterday, she'll rely on extensive...

When the George Foster Peabody Awards for excellence in electronic media were announced yesterday, they cited a program that was later accused of basing a report on fake documents, "60 Minutes II" - and a program that gleefully engages in the production of fake news, "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart." The Peabody given to the Wednesday edition of "60 Minutes" honored an exclusive story, produced by Mary Mapes and reported by Dan Rather, about the abuses at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. Several months after that journalistic coup, Ms. Mapes was fired and Mr. Rather retired as anchor of...
