John McCain, the media’s favorite “maverick” – unless he’s actively running for something – has just introduced a bill in congress called the Television Consumer Freedom Act of 2013. Normally, my iron clad rule of thumb is to take any side this guy is against but I have to admit he may have a point here. The bill would allow consumers to buy only the cable channels they want “a la carte” and not have 500 others jammed down their throats. Does anyone recall the original promise of cable TV? More than 30 years ago we asked, “why should we...
  • Sen. McCain huddles with Democrats on new campaign finance reform proposal

Sen. John McCain is talking with Democrats about a joint effort to require outside groups that have spent millions of dollars on this year’s elections to disclose their donors. McCain (R-Ariz.), once Congress’s leading champion of campaign finance reform, has kept a low profile on the issue in recent years. He raised the ire of many Republicans a decade ago for pushing comprehensive reform, and many Republicans still held it against him during his 2008 presidential campaign.

Follow the bouncing ball. Former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum has now bounced to a 12-point lead over Mitt Romney in the race for the Republican presidential nomination. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Likely Republican Primary Voters finds Santorum with 39% support to the former Massachusetts governor’s 27%. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich follows from a distance with 15% of the vote, and Texas Congressman Ron Paul runs last with 10%. Three percent (3%) like some other candidate in the race, and six percent (6%) are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.) Just over a week...

Raytheon Restarts Production of Laser-Guided Maverick for US Air Force, Navy (Source: Raytheon Company; issued February 13, 2012) SINGAPORE --- After more than two decades, Raytheon Company has formally restarted production of the laser-guided Maverick missile, with the first weapon expected to be delivered to the U.S. Air Force in late 2012. Production began following a rigorous U.S. Air Force and Navy Developmental Testing/Operational Testing program that culminated in a production contract in late 2011. "The combat-proven laser Maverick has demonstrated its effectiveness against frigate size ships, small moving boats, tanks, fortified personnel and fast moving maneuvering vehicles in excess...

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT RUSH: While all this is going, folks, we're not gonna ever, ever forget Barack Obama. We are not going to be distracted. Now, Barack Obama is in Ohio as we speak while McCain is endorsing Romney. (laughing) Who's in charge of this? Who thinks this is good? Who thinks this is helpful? I want to know. There it is: "McCain Endorsing Mitt Romney." What am I missing? Obviously somebody thinks this is well-timed and a great idea. I'd like to know who. At any rate, Obama is out in Ohio talking about the economy. Now, this is pathetic....

Cheney writes that in 2008 he was puzzled about GOP presidential nominee John McCain’s decision to suspend his campaign and request a meeting with congressional leaders to discuss the financial crisis at the White House.

“Senator McCain added nothing of substance,” Cheney writes about the now-famous meeting. “It was entirely unclear why he’d returned to Washington and why he’d wanted the congressional leadership called together. I left the Cabinet Room when the meeting was over thinking the Republican presidential ticket was in trouble.”

ISLAMABAD: Former US presidential candidate and senior Republican Senator John McCain is arriving today in the capital as part of ongoing efforts by the US and Pakistan to repair ties damaged by the Abbottabad raid on May 2. McCain, 75, is also a senior member of the US Senate’s Arms Services Committee, which has the power to approve or deny military assistance to Pakistan. He is the most senior US figure to visit Islamabad since Washington withheld $800 million in military assistance to Pakistan last month.

GILBERT - Arizona Sen. John McCain held a town hall in Gilbert this morning and the economy took center stage. The town hall was focused on the nations' economic troubles and McCain said the on-going financial problems would be much greater had Congress not passed a bill to keep the country from defaulting on its debt. McCain said he is very concerned with the recent S&P downgrade of the United States' credit rating and views it as a wake-up call to the nation. "It will cost more to borrow money and it is a very serious situation," McCain said. McCain...

An old friend came back to town last week and it was good to see him again after all these years. Because we really needed him, now more than ever. John McCain -- the old straight-talking, tough truth-telling John McCain -- stood up on the floor of the U.S. Senate and picked up just where he'd left off some four years ago: Telling it like it really is. Never mind that he was ticking off fellow conservative Republicans. Even the ones who knew in their hearts he was right. For months, Republican leaders had allowed themselves to be led by...

Arizona Sen. John McCain’s floor speech on Wednesday denouncing the negotiating tactics of some tea party-aligned members of Congress raises the question as to whether the famed maverick is back to his old tricks. (snip) McCain’s comments (and the controversy they caused) raise an intriguing question: Has McCain the straight-talking maverick been reborn?(snip) The “McCain as maverick” meme was cemented as he emerged as one of the few Republicans during the first part of the last decade to speak up in opposition to Bush and his own party in Washington. McCain’s most notable apostasy during that time was his successful...

RUSH: I want to move on to Sarah Palin now. You know the Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour? You know the...? That was actually, ladies and gentlemen, an experimental movie that the Beatles made about a bus tour, and nobody could figure out what the Beatles were up to, either. By the same token nobody knows what Palin's up to. They're all trying to figure it out. The Drive-Bys are trying to figure out what Palin is up to. Now, the interesting thing is that whatever it is she's doing, she is doing it bypassing the media. She's doing an end-around...

Shortly after Osama bin Laden met his demise at the hands of U.S. special forces, Michael Mukasey opined in the pages of the Wall Street Journal that harsh interrogation tactics had been key to identifying a courier, which, in turn, led to locating bin Laden’s compound. Such an assessment, from a highly respected former attorney general, was bound to be influential. Indeed, the CIA’s enhanced-interrogation program, used on a select few high-level al-Qaeda detainees following the 9/11 attacks, had figured prominently in Mukasey’s confirmation hearings. He had, at the behest of Congress, thoroughly reviewed the program upon taking the reins...

The politician who once best exemplified the idea of a "maverick" independent has shifted so far to the right that he is now tied for the title of the Senate's most conservative member, according to National Journal's 2010 vote ratings. According to a comprehensive examination of 96 Senate votes taken in 2010, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., along with seven of his colleagues, voted most often on the conservative side. His 89.7 composite conservative score ties him with stalwarts like Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., and gives him a more conservative score than Sens. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., and Jeff Sessions, R-Ala. (snip)...

Lindsay Graham, whom the headline called the NEW GOP MAVERICK IN THE SENATE. Writes Lizza: Graham told colleagues that McCain had called him and yelled at him, incensed that he was stealing the maverick mantle. “After that Graham story came out, McCain completely stopped talking to me,” Jay Newton-Small, the author of the Time piece, said. With that, McCain’s statement to NEWSWEEK in...

Meghan McCain apparently thinks there will be a "bloodletting" in the GOP in the next election, because the party has no room for controversial socially liberal figures like her. Appearing on CNN's "American Morning" Thursday, McCain criticized the current state of the Republican Party, which she believes is too conservative and narrow-minded... Formed in 1930 as the Egyptian Army Air Force, it became fully independent in 1937. Initially it had close links with the British Royal Air Force and was primarily equipped with British-supplied aircraft. Spitfires gave way to Meteors and Vampires before the 1952 revolution, after which the new president, General Gamal Abdel Nasser, turned to the Soviet...

Again, as far as it goes, I don’t mind a progressive voting with these folks routinely. It’s what I expect; it’s voting his conscience, and what they do. What I do mind is insulting his constituency’s intelligence by posing as some kind of moderate come election time. I only wonder whether his assumption that we are a bunch of rube idiots is more the result of the elite education, or a career in politics. Either way, it isn’t very Wisconsin like.

Lindsey Graham was sitting in a sedan early one morning and contentedly discussing the various fellow S.C. conservatives who dislike him — Tea Partiers, Constitutionalists, immigration hardliners — when Van Cato, his Upstate regional director, lifted a hand from the steering wheel and said: “That’s the leader of them right there. There’s his sign. He’s running for Greenville County Council.” “Harry Kibler,” Graham, South Carolina’s senior U.S. senator, murmured as he read the campaign poster. “He’s the one that has that prop of your legs sticking out of a toilet in the back of his truck,” Cato added helpfully. Senator John McCain's record as a staunch conservative came under fire during his Yuma town hall meeting Friday evening at Booth Machinery, prompting the senator to fire back in his own defense with a level of fiery passion reminiscent of his younger days. “It seems to me that every time you run for election you tack very much to the right…” Steve Replogle, a member of the Colorado River Tea Party, told McCain during the town hall. “I have personal questions in regards to your positions. You have at times advocated cap and trade… amnesty, and the McCain-Feingold Bill made...
