Jon Tester (D-Mont.) asked Health and Human Service Secretary Kathleen Sebilius why the United States should get vaccinations ahead of people in other countries, including those in countries that are producing the vaccine for the United States. (CNSNews.com/Penny Starr)When Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) had his turn to question Sebelus, he raised the issue of whether the United States was "entitled" to the vaccine more than other nations. "Why should we be more entitled, the U.S. be more entitled to...

It wasn't Seattle, circa 1999. That's when a meeting of the World Trade Organization, disrupted by massive riots, set the "standard" for anarchists everywhere. But Pittsburgh cheerleaders who welcomed last week's Group of 20 economic summit of world leaders didn't exactly get what they had wished for, either. The rah-rah crowd argued that Pittsburgh would be the beneficiary of wonderful media coverage by hosting the G-20. And, indeed, it received some glowing, chamber of commerce-like coverage in the buildup. It was a testament to the power of the public relations lie; supporters sold what's largely a Potemkin village as a...

The conflict with Iran is entering a new, more dangerous phase. Video of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad holding a meeting with high-level officials on June 13 in Qom has leaked out, giving us insight into how he sees the near future. “A new revolution has begun,” he says, as the Islamic Revolution finds its “true destiny” and enters a more difficult period. He speaks with genuine optimism and enthusiasm, and says it will not be limited to Iran. The tape clearly shows that Ahmadinejad believes that something has just changed that makes this moment in history special and directly related to Iran’s...

Speak out on health careFriday, July 31, 2009 Edition Published: Tuesday, July 28, 2009 3:40 PM CDT It’s generally accepted that some kind of health-care reform is needed. But what kind and when? Some on the right are leery about government mandates and public options and fear the possible cost to taxpayers—and the possibility of expanding the use of tax funds for abortions. Some on the left are concerned that the government is not actively considering a single-payer option but is instead choosing to work primarily through the current private-insurance system. The president, meanwhile, is warning that the current system...

The organized Jewish community's first official meeting with US President Barack Obama late Monday was set to include more liberal organizations than in years past, which groups on both sides saw as indicative of the White House's interest in magnifying their voices. The new J Street lobby and Americans for Peace Now made the final cut of a pared-down list that kept off traditional participants Zionist Organization of America, the Lubavitch movement and the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs, all of which are on the more conservative part of the spectrum. "They're looking to legitimize the more progressive parts...

The meeting this week between Barack Obama and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will speak volumes as to where the United States will officially stand in relation to its long history of support for Israel. Perhaps we are now at a point and place in history where the United States will no longer reach back to the Bible in its understanding the miraculous fulfillment of prophecy that occurred.

The global financial crisis will dominate the agenda at this week's Summit of the Americas in Trinidad, which also serves as U.S. President Barack Obama's coming-out party in the region. After eight years of George W. Bush, there is excitement among the 33 heads of state and government, most of whom are meeting Mr. Obama for the first time, as well as hope for a new era of civility and co-operation. While Latin America hasn't been as badly affected by the recession as Canada, the United States and Europe, the region needs renewed investments and capital loans. “Latin America's financial...

Last Thursday, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama held a private meeting in the living room of Sen. Dianne Feinstein. No one knows what was said. No aides were present. Even Sen. Feinstein didn’t sit in on the meeting. She was upstairs working. Fortunately for the sake of the nation and of posterity, our listening devices were there: Obama: Hillary, it’s really good of you to ask for this meeting. We had a hard-fought and spirited contest, but it wasn’t personal and there are no hard feelings, right? Clinton: Who said I asked for the meeting? It was you.

Representing Michigan, state Democratic Chairman Mark Brewer suggested that Obama get nearly half of the state's delegates -- even though his name wasn't on the ballot. This started the bickering all over again. "This committee cannot use the results of such a flawed primary to assign delegates," said Obama representative David Bonior to a blend of cheers, boos and hisses. "Throwing the insult, if you will, at the Michigan primary that it was flawed," committee member Donald Fowler said, "is not appropriate." Only Sen. Carl Levin of Michigan had an irrefutable point. "We've got a totally irrational system of nominating...

Last week's story about the uncertainties endured by people who live in or near the route of the I-69/Trans-Texas Corridor prompted many messages of support. But I wish there had been room in the story to quote Steve Huber, a University of Houston law professor who spoke at a January meeting in Bellville on the project. Huber opposed the corridor plan without taking the position — adopted, for instance, by U.S. Rep. John Culberson toward rail on Richmond — that the people most directly affected deserve the most consideration when a route is chosen. "My position carefully avoided the sort...

By BILL POOVEY, Associated Press Writer Wed Oct 3, 3:15 AM ET CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - In an unlikely marriage of desire to secede from the United States, two advocacy groups from opposite political traditions — New England and the South — are sitting down to talk. ADVERTISEMENT Tired of foreign wars and what they consider right-wing courts, the Middlebury Institute wants liberal states like Vermont to be able to secede peacefully. Global warming dissenters few at U.S. weather meeting Thu Jan 18, 2007 7:30 PM GMT By Ed Stoddard SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) - Joe D'Aleo was a rare voice of dissent this week at the American Meteorological Society's annual meeting in San Antonio. D'Aleo, executive director of the International Climate and Environmental Change Assessment Project, a group of scientists, doesn't think greenhouse gas emissions are the major cause of global warming and climate change. Russian oil supplies may begin to flow to Europe again, via Belarus. OPEC has already said it would cut 1.7 million barrels a day from production. OPEC leaders rejected calling emergency meetings earlier this year when oil markets declined sharply. The cartel's ministers...
