The next stops for Kasich are the primaries in New England. Vermont and Massachusetts, whose media markets at points overlap with New Hampshire, where Kasich practically lived for the past several months, both hold primaries on March 1. The Maine primary follows on March 5. Those around Kasich believe he can capitalize on his investment in New Hampshire with voters in those surrounding states. Kasich is scheduled to spend the day of the South Carolina primary in Massachusetts ... Still, Kasich’s biggest target other than his native Ohio remains Michigan, which will hold its primary on March 8. Kasich’s advisers...

A virtual restoration of Constitutional carry was introduced to the Michigan legislature in 2015, but to my knowledge, it did not move.  This may have been because a scandal involving an extramarital affair involving the sponsor, Cindy Gamrat. Int 2016, Constitutional carry bills were introduced in the House, numbered 5301 to 5304.  From upnorthlive.com: "These bills simply place into law the Second Amendment rights of Michigan residents to bear arms without asking the government's permission to do so," Rep. Barrett said, sponsor of HB 5302. "The current concealed weapons permit amounts to nothing more than a state tax on...

Another case has surfaced where Detroit police officers are charged with falsely arresting a legally armed black man for carrying a concealed weapon.  The man was openly carrying.  In Detroit open carry is completely legal.   The charge is a five year felony in Michigan, so this is no laughing matter.Having worked with a number of police agencies in the early 1970’s and later, and having talked with people inside the police culture of the time in large urban areas, I can report that racism and discrimination against black people in the 70’s was rampant.  A lot has changed...

Police arrested a congressional staffer to Democratic Rep. Sander Levin Oct. 8 following a bizarre altercation where he attacked a lover with a shovel. According to a police report, Tim Foster assaulted a black man described as his boyfriend with a small red and black shovel, leaving the man so badly injured that he was hospitalized with scrapes and bruises across his neck and torso, Roll Call reported Tuesday. The dispute began at about 12:30 a.m., with the two getting into an argument at a house in Baltimore which soon escalated to physical violence on Foster’s part, according to Roll...

A Michigan man employed at the Hillsdale Bob Evans plant was fired after refusing to remove a Confederate flag from his truck, the Hillsdale Daily News reports. According to the man, his bosses at the plant forced him to remove it after receiving a single anonymous complaint. Angela Payne, a spokeswoman for the restaurant chain, told NBC24 that the flag was “offensive to many… customers and employees.” The employee, Wesley Rogers, was told two weeks ago to remove the flag but refused, resulting in his termination. “They said they were doing their best to follow up on a complaint,” Rogers...

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder, a Republican, is upset about the number of immigrants in his state—in his estimation there are far too few of them. In contrast with Republican politicians who want to rein in president Obama’s executive actions on immigration, the governor asked the Obama Administration early last year to use its executive powers to designate 50,000 extra visas to the Detroit metro area for high-skilled immigrants. Citing population loss and the need to jumpstart the Motor City economically ....Snyder—a former CEO for Gateway Computer and head of a venture capitalist firm—called on his state to “embrace immigration.”

The Pentagon has responded to a globally-released ‘Kill List’, asking law enforcement to give extra protection for military personnel whose personal information was released,News Channel 10 reports. CBS News national security correspondent David Martin reports the Pentagon spent the weekend notifying the soldiers who appeared on the list, and urged city police departments and military police to increase patrol in the neighborhoods where the targeted live. The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) published the list days ago, a report that contained names, photos, and home addresses of U.S. Armed Forces personnel, causing alarm in cities potentially at high-risk....
  • 79-year-old explosive enthusiast's death not likely caused by dynamite on property, police say

Though Elwood Hansen's rural property had both ample amounts of fireworks and dynamite on it, authorities don't think the explosives had anything to do with what blew up his solidly built, 140-year-old stone house while he was inside. The 79-year-old Bridgewater Township man was likely asleep in his bedroom when he was killed in the blast around 3:30 a.m. Saturday morning, said Michigan State Police Sgt. Chuck Bachmeier. At least one of his two dogs also died in the explosion. The other was unaccounted for. No one else was injured, according to Bachmeier. A neighbor told The News Hansen, who...
  • MI: Judge Upholds Open Carry rights against law-breaking School District

Michigan allows people with concealed carry permits to carry guns in schools, with a twist; the guns have to be openly carried in the school.  Michigan preemption law prevents local units of government from enacting a patchwork or local, contradictory laws, many of which violate basic Second Amendment rights.  MCL 123.1101(a) and MCL 123.1102 preempt local units of government from regulating firearms. School Districts are local units of government.  In Michigan, a number of school districts are unwilling to abide by State law, and routinely violate it.  A lawsuit was filed in March.  From Michigan miopencarry.org: As set forth...

One of the limits to the legal use of deadly force was illustrated by a recent incident in Detroit, Michigan.  A disabled veteran caught a robbery suspect, and attempted to hold him for police.  After about five minutes, the suspect ran away.  The vet shot in the air in an attempt to stop the suspect, but it did not work.  From clickondetroit.com(with video): "The criminal hit me with something in the back of my head," the veteran said. He did not want to be named in this story. The robber was trying to steal the man's gold chain. He...

A mouthful of missing teeth. Chronic pain all over the body. Unrelenting weakness in joints and muscles. Even death. Those were some of the claims that Dr. Farid Fata’s victims heaped upon him at his sentencing trial this week for administering at least 2,000 unnecessary chemotherapy treatments. Fata admitted to misdiagnosing and exposing his cancer patients to unneeded and excessive rounds of chemotherapy to collect payments from both them and their insurance companies. He was sentenced on Friday to 45 years in prison by U.S. District Judge Paul Borman — which will most likely cover the rest of the 50-year-old’s...

In March of 2014, Johann Deffert was exercising his second amendment rights by peacefully openly carrying a holstered handgun in Grand Rapids.  As he passed a Church, someone called 911, perhaps to harass the open carrier.  Such harassment has become common, and is advocated by disarmists.  When the police arrived on the scene, Deffert was already well past the Church.  The officer drew his pistol and pointed it at Deffert.  The most threatening activity appears to be something the 911 caller never mentioned, and which the officer characterised as "talking to nobody", certainly an innocuous activity in these days...

A recent carjacking attempt was stopped cold by a black woman.   A black woman armed with a .357 Sig Sauer pistol and training.    Only a few years ago, this would have been a highly unlikely event.  Michigan passed a shall issue concealed carry law in 2001.  Detroit's city government was initially hostile to the idea, but by 2010, five city council members had permits.  After  Detroit declared bankruptcy, emergency manager Kevin Orr appointed Chief Craig in July of 2013, freeing him from dependence on the Mayor and City Council, unlike most large city police chiefs.  Chief Craig has been...

Cindy Gresham paid US$6,000 cash in 2010 for her Tudor-style house on Detroit’s west side for herself and three children. Now she probably will lose the home, which came with a surprise US$8,586 unpaid tax bill that has since tripled. The brick home is among about 52,000 Detroit properties the city may seize for unpaid taxes on March 31, including as many as a fifth of all occupied homes. Gresham was one of 5,000 homeowners at the city’s Cobo Convention Center last month trying to negotiate payment arrangements for tax balances that are eclipsing the area’s depressed property values. “The...
