CHARACTER A wise person once said, "You can easily judge the character of a man by how he treats those who can do nothing to him or for him." (author unknown) Columnist Ann Landers put it this way, "The best index of a person’s character is how he treats people who can do him absolutely no good." In the Christian Scriptures, the Apostle Paul talks about entertaining "angels unawares." (Hebrews 13:1) What these writers are talking about here is more than an act. It’s an attitude - about life, about people, and most importantly, about the...

Jerilynn Robinson feared the worst when she initially saw a note left on her car. However, upon closer inspection, she realized it was actually a note thanking her husband Tom for his service in the armed forces. Georgia teenager James Dorris, 13, had seen the veteran license plate on Robinson’s car and decided to leave a note,WSB-TV reported. “I was surprised,” Tom told WFLA-TV. “This is one of the very first notes I’ve ever gotten left on my vehicle, just thanking me for being a veteran, or for serving. And that did it. It brought joy to me.”

He will endure as long as the sun, as long as the moon, through all generations. He will be like rain falling on a mown field, like showers watering the earth. In his days the righteous will flourish; prosperity will abound till the moon is no more. He will rule from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth. The desert tribes will bow before him and his enemies will lick the dust. The kings of Tarshish and of distant shores will bring tribute to him; the kings of Sheba and Seba will present...

Over the past decade, Sgt. Shane Ortega has served three combat tours: Two in Iraq, one in Afghanistan. Two as a Marine and one in the Army. Two as a woman and one as a man. Ortega is a helicopter crew chief in the Army’s 25th Infantry Division in Hawaii. He was born female and would like to serve the rest of his career as a man. That would require a significant change in Pentagon rules, which require that transgender troops be discharged from military service, usually on medical grounds. Last summer, medical tests showed Ortega had elevated testosterone levels...

A 20-year-old Kansas man plotted to kill American soldiers with a vehicle bomb at the Fort Riley military base, an attack he planned to carry out on behalf of the ISIS terror group, prosecutors announced Friday. John T. Booker, also known as Mohammed Abdullah Hassan, was arrested as part of a lengthy FBI investigation. Federal authorities said he was arrested near the army base in Manhattan, Kansas, as he completed final preparations to detonate the bomb, which had, in fact, been rendered inert while he was under FBI surveillance. “As alleged in the complaint, John Booker attempted to attack U.S....

Today the Fort Hood soldiers who were wounded in the 2009 terrorist attack, the one that the Obama administration insisted on classifying as workplace violence, will finally receive the Purple Hearts that they so deserve. However they won’t be receiving the financial benefits from the pentagon that go along with it and that’s something Ted Cruz calls outrageous and indefensible. Cruz says the Secretary of Defense will be hearing from him and he promises to keep fighting to ensure these wounded veterans get the money they are supposed to receive with the Purple Heart.

Surveys find that men in U.S. special operations forces do not believe women can meet the physical and mental demands of their commando jobs, and they fear the Pentagon will lower standards to integrate women into their elite units, according to interviews and documents obtained by The Associated Press. Studies that surveyed personnel found "major misconceptions" within special operations about whether women should be brought into the male-only jobs. They also revealed concerns that department leaders would "capitulate to political pressure, allowing erosion of training standards," according to one document. Some of those concerns were not limited to men, researchers...

The US military is in danger of losing its technological advantage unless it invests in research and finds ways to build innovative weapons much faster, top officials said Thursday. The Pentagon unveiled an initiative to streamline its bureaucracy and tap into technological breakthroughs in the private sector amid growing anxiety that American forces' longtime hi-tech edge is slipping away. The measures reflected "an overriding concern that our technological superiority is at risk," Frank Kendall, the Pentagon's chief weapons buyer, wrote in a report. "Potential adversaries are challenging the US lead in conventional military capability in ways not seen since the...

In August of 2014, military helicopters flew low over residential neighborhoods of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, engaged in a series of night-time training exercises. The exercises involved the Naval Warfare Development Group - a "special forces" component of the U.S. Navy - and were aimed at enhancing urban combat tactics. Just as they had two years earlier, military personnel had come to the Twin Cities to conduct counter-terrorism training operations in an urban environment. And just as before, those operations commenced with little advance notice to the public.

Conservative firebrand Ted Cruz is used to having plenty of opponents cheer for his demise, and it turns out that he got some practice for that role back when he was a high school drama geek. The Texas senator and presidential aspirant says that he relished playing the villain in his teenage theater productions, which he enjoyed so much that he toyed with dropping out of school to try his luck in Hollywood. "It's one thing to play the good guy in drama," he told CNBC's John Harwood in an interview. "It's a fun thing also to play the bad...

An 18 month trial period allowing female Marines to attend the Marine Corps’ Infantry Officer Course will end without a single female graduate, reported the Marine Corps Times. The opportunity for female volunteers is part of a larger effort to determine the feasibility of allowing female officers to take part in ground combat operations. If anyone had successfully completed the course, they would not have earned the occupational designator or entered the infantry, since the program was only an experiment. The IOC began accepting female officers in September 2012, but by July 2014, only 20 female officers had volunteered, and...

Obama the undergrad Remember this? It’s one of the few papers that Obama wrote while in college or law school that is still available, a 1983 article that appeared in the Columbia campus paper. The article is mostly straight reportage and quotes about the Nuclear Freeze Movement, featuring organizations called “Arms Race Alternatives” (ARA) and “Students Against Militarism” (SAM). But Obama reveals his own attitude in a few comments such as, “Generally, the narrow focus of the Freeze movement as well as academic discussions of first versus second strike capabilities, suit the military-industrial interests, as they continue adding to their...
