Mozilla Web browsers are potentially more vulnerable to attack than Microsoft's Internet Explorer, according to a Symantec report. But the report, released Monday, also found that hackers are still focusing their efforts on IE. As it marked the 75 millionth download of its Firefox Web browser, the Mozilla Foundation said it was expanding in several directions. The foundation's open-source e-mail reader, Thunderbird, is approaching its 10 millionth download. Mozilla has rolled out a security update for its eponymous Internet software suite. Details of the changes in Mozilla 1.7.10 have yet to be given in the release notes, although it is worth noting that this release is the successor to 1.7.9 and not to be confused with 1.7.1. The next version of Firefox has been delayed for a few months, the Mozilla Foundation confirmed Thursday. Earlier Mozilla stated on its Web site that the next major release of Firefox, called version 1.1, would be released in July. But on Wednesday, lead Firefox engineer Ben Goodger updated the group's roadmap to indicate that the next major release would now not be until after August. AOL's Netscape has finally unveiled its long awaited Netscape 8.0 browser in the "gold version" which combines the best of Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer browsers. Its underlying engine is FF but it can automatically switch to an I.E engine when that's necessary on certain websites that are designed to work only with I.E. Its finally here!

A security update for the Firefox open-source browser has been released by the Mozilla Foundation, a move that follows the public disclosure of exploit code for two "extremely critical" vulnerabilities. Firefox seems to be heading Internet Explorer's way with security research company Secunia stating on its website that two vulnerabilities found in the popular browser can be exploited to conduct cross-site scripting attacks and compromise a user's system. The Mozilla Foundation is aware of the two potentially critical Firefox security vulnerabilities. They maintain that there are currently no known active exploits of these vulnerabilities though a "proof of concept" has been reported. Web analytics company OneStat.com reported Tuesday that Mozilla’s Web browsers, including Firefox, comprise 8.69 percent of the global market for Web browsers. Microsoft’s Internet Explorer dominates with 86.63 percent of the market, but Apple’s own Safari Web browser is in third, with 1.26 percent. Netscape makes up about 1.08 percent of the global market, according to OneStat.com, with Opera trailing the pack with about 1.03 percent.
