Bill Clinton still wants to be known as America's "first black president." The former president downplayed President Obama's historic presidency, telling a Memphis crowd Friday everyone has some African ancestry. "Unless your ancestors, every one of you, are 100 percent, 100 percent from sub-Saharan Africa, we are all mixed-race people," he said, according to reports.

Long before Michelle Obama became First Lady, her mother had misgivings about her marrying a young man named Barack Obama — because he was biracial. In a Chicago TV interview that aired during Obama’s 2004 U.S. Senate campaign — and newly resurrected by Michelle Obama biographer Peter Slevin in a book due out next month — Marion Robinson confessed to being “a little bit” wary about her future son-in-law being the product of a white mom and black dad. But it could’ve been worse, according to Robinson. “That didn’t concern me as much as had he been completely white,” Robinson...

The context for this little chestnut of racial nastiness was a heated floor debate in the Illinois legislature over a proposed education reform bill. The fireworks started when Democratic Representative Linda Chapa LaVia, who is Hispanic, delivered a speech criticizing charter schools. Ms. Chapa LaVia was no doubt casting aspersions on behalf of teachers unions — who’ve contributed heavily to her campaigns, are bankrupting the state, and don’t much care for competition. In defense of the status quo — which traps far too many children, especially children of color, in failing public schools — Chapa LaVia appealed to her fellow...

You had to know this was coming. Obama has been flailing around for all of 2013 in what has been called the worst year of his Presidency. As he sinks in the polls, Obama whips out the race card and he is no stranger to this. Ralph Nader accused Obama of that in 2008. "He wants to appeal to white guilt. You appeal to white guilt not by coming on as black is beautiful, black is powerful. Basically, he's coming on as someone who is not going to threaten the white power structure, whether it's corporate or whether it's simply...

Once again we reach that time of the week where we single out an odious person for our Jerk of the Week honors. Some weeks are harder than others, but this week was surprisingly easy. With the holiday week between Christmas and New Years, you would have thought that most people would be on their best behavior or lay low. However, MSNBC is the gift that keeps on giving. This time, it's in the form of Melissa Harris-Perry. Earlier this week, Melissa Harris-Perry had a segment on her MSNBC show where a picture was shown of Mitt Romney and his...

President Obama is a “mulatto faggot” and “the first gay president,” according to Ayo Kimathi, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement acquisitions officer who was revealed to be running a website that “prepares” black people for an “inevitable clash” with white people. In a video from August 2009, found on Kimathi’s YouTube page, the government employee is seen lecturing a crowd about the evils of homosexuality and the president’s efforts to expand the rights of gays. “Miserable, low-life, scum-dwelling product of the Europeans,” he at one point calls Obama while ranting against the president declaring June to be National LGBT Pride Month.After...

Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubry have been at each other’s throats for what seems like an eternity. He’s supposedly acting like a racist pig, and the allegations that he loses it every time their daughter, Nahla, is referred to as "black" aren’t helping any. Halle seems to have had enough and is firing back with some racism of her own, insisting that Nahla be referred to as black -- and even invoking the one-drop theory. The theory states that anyone who has even a single drop of African blood in them is black. It dates back to slavery days, when...

A friend of mine sent me this story of his time in the Marine Corps. Read through to the end, it’s a shocker. What strikes me most is what he said as to where he grew up: Indonesia. He told me he wanted to be President of the US someday. I remember lightly smiling and commenting that maybe by the time he gets to be 40 or so, America will be ready for a Black man to be President and I wished him luck. We spoke of the racial tensions I saw at home while growing up and I asked...

He is also half white. Unless the one-drop rule still applies, our president-elect is not black. We call him that -- he calls himself that -- because we use dated language and logic. After more than 300 years and much difficult history, we hew to the old racist rule: Part-black is all black. Fifty percent equals a hundred. There's no in-between. That was my reaction when I read these words on the front page of this newspaper the day after the election: "Obama Makes History: U.S. Decisively Elects First Black President."
