Elvis Costello composed “(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes†on a train traveling from London to Liverpool in 1976, before he became a recording artist. Sketched out in the final 10 minutes of the three-hour journey, “Red Shoes†is a surrealist tale about an imagined jilting and the appearance of earthbound angels offering the singer immortality—in exchange for his footwear. Months later, Mr. Costello recorded “Red Shoes†for his first album, “My Aim Is True,†which was released in 1977.

When we played this song at LZ Lambeau, a welcome home event for Vietnam vets and their families held at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wis., in 2010, we were overwhelmed by the response it received, especially by spouses of Vietnam vets. They sang along with tears in their eyes, because they were the ones saying goodbye to the men who were boarding the planes for Vietnam. And it got to soldiers/vets, too. As Jason Sherman, an AFVN DJ during part of his tour in Vietnam, recalled: “Leaving on a Jet Plane brought tears to my eyes.â€

The spy/espionage sub-genre of movies is in no danger of petering out. This year alone brought us big films like The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation and Spectre, the latest James Bond adventure; not to mention news that another big spy franchise (Jason Bourne) will be continuing, as well. With so many spies out there playing cloak and dagger games across the silver screen, it’s not surprising that there could be some creative bleed-over between franchises. Mission: Impossible 5 and James Bond 24 were especially similar: both featured stories where the franchise hero had to uncover a...

You may find previous editions of this weekly post by searching "Asian Movies" in Free Republic. I had planned to recommend a serious and movingly romantic Korean film this week but after the bombs in Paris I sort of feel that this is a week for more light hearted fare. I have been looking for a Lydia Lum film as she is less well known in the West than she should be. The woman was Lucille Ball funny and if you find a way to watch the Singaporean TV Series "Living with Lydia" please do so you will not be...
