A phenomenon we all needed came into our view at National Prayer Breakfast 2013, and it couldn’t have come along at a better time. The phenomenon in the person of Dr. Ben Carson didn’t just upstage President Barack Obama when he spoke at Thursday’s National Prayer Breakfast, he restored amazing grace to a loudly-lauded event. How can we take to heart an event touted as “inspirational” and beneficial to federal government officials when they piously break breakfast bread before returning to careers duking it out in House and Senate? How sincere can proclaimed Christianity be in an atmosphere where the...

Justifiably the President always gets the most media attention at the annual National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C. But this year a follow-up lunch featuring Florida Republican Senator Marco Rubio may have been more surprising and interesting. The National Prayer Breakfast is actually a 24 hour event including several meals involving several thousand participants, about 20 percent of whom come from overseas. Attenders and speakers are overwhelmingly Christian, although the event is interfaith and includes Jews and Muslims in the program. Rubio’s lunch remarks today were more like a sermon and focused on Jesus. Rubio preached on 4 lessons from...

Tim Tebow — the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback who will appear in a pro-life ad during the Super Bowl — will attend the National Prayer Breakfast on Thursday, his agent tells POLITICO. Asked if Tebow will speak at the breakfast, his agent, Susan Vanderlinde, said, “Yes, I believe he is.” President Obama and several lawmakers plan to attend the breakfast. Tebow, who just finished his last football season at the University of Florida, has crossed over from sports to politics and religion: He will appear in an ad paid for by the conservative Christian group, Focus on the Family, during the...

Pres. Obama Quotes Hadith February 12, 2009 Prepared remarks of President Barack Obama at the National Prayer Breakfast THE WHITE HOUSE Office of the Press Secretary Remarks of President Barack Obama National Prayer Breakfast As Prepared for Delivery Good morning. I want to thank the Co-Chairs of this breakfast, Representatives Heath Shuler and Vernon Ehlers. (snip) We know too that whatever our differences, there is one law that binds all great religions together. Jesus told us to “love thy neighbor as thyself.” The Torah commands, “That which is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow.” In Islam, there...

Religion's role in U.S. politics was on full display on Thursday as President Barack Obama spoke and prayed at the annual National Prayer Breakfast. Obama, an adult convert to Christianity, used the occasion to announce that he will be establishing a White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. This will replace or be an extension of the Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives established by former President George W. Bush, who was strongly supported by conservative Christians. Some of Obama's remarks about the new office are sure to raise eyebrows in those conservative Christian circles. For example: "The goal...

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama said Thursday he will establish a White House office of faith-based initiatives that will show no favoritism to any religious group and adhere to the strict separation of church and state. Addressing the National Prayer Breakfast, Obama spoke of how faith has often been a divisive tool, responsible for war and prejudice. But, he said, "there is no religion whose central tenet is hate. There is no God who condones taking the life of an innocent human being," and all religions teach people to love and care for one another. That is the common ground...

"Each day our nation fails to act, the problem only grows worse," the president said at the National Hispanic Prayer Breakfast. "I will continue to work closely with members of both parties, to get past our differences, and pass a bill I can sign this year." Bush, at the prayer breakfast, said, "We must meet our moral obligation to treat newcomers with decency and show compassion to the vulnerable and exploited, because we're called to answer both the demands of justice and the call for mercy. "Most Americans agree on these principles," the president said. "And now it's time for...

President Bush has never been shy about talking about his faith, and he has been getting more opportunities with the increasing popularity of prayer breakfasts. Bush doesn't typically lead the worship at these events, but speaks easily of his faith and humbly of his place before God. "Through fellowship and prayer, we acknowledge that all power is temporary, and must ultimately answer to his purposes," Bush said at the National Prayer Breakfast in February. In the past six weeks, Bush has been the main attraction at three prayer events. He hosted the National Day of Prayer at the White House,...

FORT HUACHUCA -God has been wonderful to America, but God requires love in return for favoring the nation, a retired Army lieutenant general said Thursday. Speaking before 400 at the fort's annual National Prayer Breakfast, Alonzo E. Short said noted evangelist Billy Graham recently said America needs to recommit itself to God to ensure the nation stays in God's good graces. "God is looking down on this assembly and there is one thing He wants from each of us," Short said. God, he said, is looking for an answer to a simple question. "What is your relationship with my son,...

President Bush yesterday said that affirming God's supremacy "is particularly appropriate in the heart of a capital built upon the promise of self-government" and called for "opening ourselves to God's priorities" at the National Prayer Breakfast. "Prayer has always been one of the great equalizers in American life," he told thousands of faithful at the Washington Hilton & Towers. "Through fellowship and prayer, we acknowledge that all power is temporary and must ultimately answer to His purposes." Mr. Bush, who regards Abraham Lincoln as America's greatest president, cited the 16th president's reference to God after he was elected to a...
