WASHINGTON -- After a weeklong recount, Friday's vote tally showed that Republican Renee Ellmers did, indeed, win election to the 2nd Congressional District seat that had been held for 14 years by Democrat Bob Etheridge. Etheridge acknowledged Friday afternoon what the numbers had said since Nov. 2, that he was ousted by Ellmers, a tea party darling and political newcomer. A State Board of Elections review Thursday of vote totals in Sampson County left incumbent U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge close enough to challenger Renee Ellmers to seek a recount in the state's 2nd Congressional District race. Ellmers, a Republican from Dunn, led by 2,099 votes Tuesday night, but the next day, Sampson County elections officials discovered they hadn't reported totals from three of the county's four early-voting sites, said Johnnie McLean, deputy director of the State Board of Elections. About 950,000 voters have already cast their ballots in North Carolina, according to state data released Sunday that shows an early Republican surge in voting has been matched by late strength at the polls among registered Democrats. RALEIGH — A Carolina Journal review of 2007-08 expenditures by the office of then-Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue reveals that, in addition to not paying for a number of campaign-related flights, she also made no payments to private aircraft owners for travel related to official state business. A Craven County voter says he had a near miss at the polls on Thursday when an electronic voting machine completed his straight-party ticket for the opposite of what he intended. Sam Laughinghouse of New Bern said he pushed the button to vote Republican in all races, but the voting machine screen displayed a ballot with all Democrats checked. He cleared the screen and tried again with the same result, he said. If you approach a congressman in Washington D.C. and try to ask them what seems to be a pretty simple question and he goes nuts, grabbing at you and demanding to know who you are … don’t answer him. Voters are evenly split when asked to rate U.S. Sen. Richard Burr, according to a new poll by Public Policy Polling. The firm asked 788 likely voters for an opinion on Burr's job performance and 35 percent said they approved while 35 percent disapproved. The remaining 30 percent were undecided.
