Democratic Rep. Bobby Etheridge has conceded to Republican Renee Ellmers, handing the GOP a victory in a race few thought the party would win. When local election officials completed their recount of votes cast in North Carolina’s 2nd District race on Friday, Ellmers led Etheridge by 1,489 votes. “Now, the election recount has concluded, and the numbers confirm that despite the incredible support we had - and neither candidate getting to 50 percent - in the end we came up just a little too short,” Etheridge told supporters at a news conference. With the victory, House Republicans have now picked...

WASHINGTON -- After a weeklong recount, Friday's vote tally showed that Republican Renee Ellmers did, indeed, win election to the 2nd Congressional District seat that had been held for 14 years by Democrat Bob Etheridge. Etheridge acknowledged Friday afternoon what the numbers had said since Nov. 2, that he was ousted by Ellmers, a tea party darling and political newcomer. Despite the ongoing recount, Ellmers has been acting the role of congresswoman-elect. She was on Capitol Hill all week with other House freshmen, attending orientations, hiring staff and searching for a place to bunk in Washington.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Republican Renee Ellmers has unseated veteran Congressman Bob Etheridge, according to unofficial results of a recount in the tight Second District race. "What's done is done," Etheridge said Friday afternoon in conceding defeat. The seven-term Democrat picked up six votes on Ellmers after voting results were tabulated a second time, but it was nowhere near enough to overcome her 1,489-vote lead following the Nov. 2 election. The State Board of Elections still must audit the results and will meet next Tuesday to certify the results of all elections statewide. Etheridge touted his accomplishments during a brief news...

A State Board of Elections review Thursday of vote totals in Sampson County left incumbent U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge close enough to challenger Renee Ellmers to seek a recount in the state's 2nd Congressional District race. Ellmers, a Republican from Dunn, led by 2,099 votes Tuesday night, but the next day, Sampson County elections officials discovered they hadn't reported totals from three of the county's four early-voting sites, said Johnnie McLean, deputy director of the State Board of Elections. The Sampson officials corrected the error Wednesday afternoon without telling the state, and Ellmers' lead slipped to 1,646 votes out of...

About 950,000 voters have already cast their ballots in North Carolina, according to state data released Sunday that shows an early Republican surge in voting has been matched by late strength at the polls among registered Democrats. An Associated Press analysis of the state's voter database shows more than 15 percent of North Carolina's registered voters have made their selections. Early voting in the state ended Saturday, and mail-in absentee ballots continue to arrive ahead of Tuesday's election. About 46 percent of ballots cast have come from registered Democrats, while 36 percent are from registered Republicans. The advantage for Democrats...

RALEIGH — A Carolina Journal review of 2007-08 expenditures by the office of then-Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue reveals that, in addition to not paying for a number of campaign-related flights, she also made no payments to private aircraft owners for travel related to official state business. Records show flights that were a combination of official business and campaign events. Perdue spokeswoman Chrissy Pearson acknowledged the flights and told CJ that travel provided to Perdue when she was conducting official state business was treated by the Office of the Lieutenant Governor as a gift to the state from those providing the...

A Craven County voter says he had a near miss at the polls on Thursday when an electronic voting machine completed his straight-party ticket for the opposite of what he intended. Sam Laughinghouse of New Bern said he pushed the button to vote Republican in all races, but the voting machine screen displayed a ballot with all Democrats checked. He cleared the screen and tried again with the same result, he said. Then he asked for and received help from election staff. “They pushed it twice and the same thing happened,” Laughinghouse said. “That was four times in a row....

If you approach a congressman in Washington D.C. and try to ask them what seems to be a pretty simple question and he goes nuts, grabbing at you and demanding to know who you are … don’t answer him. Why not answer? This guy is showing aggressive behavior and has enough power -- since we gave it to them -- to make your life miserable for years to come. I don’t blame the guy for not answering. Without further comment, I give you Rep. Bob “Who are You” Etheridge (D-N.C.).

Here is shocking video of North Carolina Democrat Rep. Bob Etheridge being asked by some students on a public sidewalk in Washington, D.C. if he supports the “Obama Agenda.” Once he realized the students were asking him that question, he went bonkers. Etheridge hit their camera and then grabbed one of the students by the arm as he repeated over and over “Who are you, Who are you? Tell me who you are?” The students identified themselves as such, but Etheridge persisted. At one point he then grabbed the student whose arm he had been holding onto and pulled himself...

Republican Senator Richard Burr’s support has fallen below 50% for the first time since January in his bid for reelection in North Carolina. The latest Rasmussen Reports statewide telephone survey of Likely Voters shows Burr picking up 48% of the vote against North Carolina Secretary of State Elaine Marshall who earns 40% support. Only three percent (3%) would opt for some other candidate in this race, while nine percent (9%) are undecided. Support for Marshall is up eight points from last month and is at its highest level seen so far in the race. This is Burr’s lowest level of...

BJ Lawson has decided to run again for Congress!!! BJ is the ultimate "anti" candidate. He ran against David Price in 2008, and polled 37% in an Obama Tsunami. This is better than any candidate has done since the district was re-drawn to ensure Price's re-election by the state political hacks. I was introduced to BJ when I was following Ron Paul's presidential run. He has been called the "hybrid candidate" because he attracted so many traditional Democrat voters, due to his strong stance on issues of personal liberty. His website on issues is still not up, but here are...

Voters are evenly split when asked to rate U.S. Sen. Richard Burr, according to a new poll by Public Policy Polling. The firm asked 788 likely voters for an opinion on Burr's job performance and 35 percent said they approved while 35 percent disapproved. The remaining 30 percent were undecided. As you can see on our new Polling Central feature, Burr's approval rating is lower than former Sen. Elizabeth Dole's was at the same point in the election cycle. (Polling Central is interactive. To compare Dole and Burr, just click the boxes for Dole's poll results.) In February 2008, PPP...

For my interview with Will Breazeale, Republican candidate for Congress in North Carolina's Seventh Congressional District, we met at a Wilmington Chick-Fil-A. He picked the place. The restaurants in this successful franchise are owned by Christian businessmen and they serve great chicken. Will is a faithful Christian who likes chicken. Nothing could have worked out better. Will, 41, can be an at-ease guy, and is good company. But he has a spit-and-polish, no-nonsense streak that you might expect in a man who is a highly-decorated military officer, has pulled three tours of combat duty in the Middle East, served in...

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the city of King NC has received approximately six inches of snow over the last seven days. Apparently, that snowfall, coupled with limited power outages, was frightening enough that, last Friday February 5th, 2010, King Mayor Jack Warren declared a local state of emergency pursuant to North Carolina General Statute § 14-288.12. ... With the stroke of a pen, the mayor stripped them of their fundamental right to travel, to peaceably assemble, and to openly bear arms as enumerated in the North Carolina Constitution. In addition to the denial of fundamental and...
