Sasse Statement on Election Lincoln, NE - U.S. Senator Ben Sasse issued the following statement: "On Tuesday, America demanded disruption. My family and I congratulate President-Elect Trump on his decisive victory, and we pray that he will lead wisely and faithfully keep his oath to a Constitution of limited government. Starting today, I will do everything in my power to hold the President to his promises: to fight for an ethics reform package that upends cronyism and enacts term limits; to lead on repealing and replacing ObamaCare; and to nominate judges who reject law-making by unelected courts. Melissa and I...

It was a huge hometown comeuppance for the young Nebraska senator who easily won his first political race in 2014. Though the former official in the George W. Bush Department of Health and Human Services has been popular in his home state until Saturday, the utter rejection of the “Never Trump” efforts he has championed is sure to hurt his credibility with GOP voters in Nebraska. His strongly conservative voting record on all matters except trade, where Trump is strongest, kept people from even speculating about a primary challenge when he runs for re-election in 2020. But now — with...

Hillary Clinton has won the Democratic presidential primary in Nebraska, but it's a victory for the Democratic front-runner that won't get her any closer to clinching her party's nomination. That's because Nebraska allocated all 25 of its delegates to this summer's Democratic National Convention in a caucus held on March 5 that was won by the Vermont senator. He took home 15 delegates from that caucus, while Clinton won 10. Earlier Tuesday, Sanders won the Democratic primary in West Virginia.

Key Senate Republicans voiced optimism Tuesday about Donald Trump’s presidential prospects in November, the clearest signal yet to the GOP rank and file to unite behind the bombastic billionaire and turn their energy against Democrat Hillary Clinton. But it was uncertain whether the doubters could be quieted. Trump added two more primaries to his column, taking West Virginia and Nebraska. Clinton lost West Virginia to Sen. Bernie Sanders, who refuses to bow out as Trump’s GOP foes have, but that hardly dented her huge Democratic delegate lead.

Ted Cruz floated the possibility of restarting his presidential campaign if he wins Nebraska’s GOP primary on Tuesday and avoided saying whether he supports Donald Trump's bid for president. Cruz, who suspended his White House run last week, said he does not expect to win Nebraska's primary but is leaving the door open. "We launched this campaign intending to win. The reason we suspended our campaign was that with the Indiana loss, I felt there was no path to victory," he said Tuesday on conservative host Glenn Beck's radio program. "If that changes, we will certainly respond accordingly." Cruz demurred...

Donald Trump may have thought he delivered the knock-out punch to Ted Cruz -- but the Texas senator apparently doesn't see himself down and counted out of the 2016 Republican presidential race. Not yet, anyway. Cruz, in an interview Tuesday with radio host and supporter Glenn Beck, opened the door just a crack to kick-starting his now-suspended campaign if he somehow starts winning primary contests again. Asked what he’d do if, for instance, Nebraska voters back him in Tuesday’s primary, Cruz said he assumes that won’t happen but added: “Let’s be very clear, if there is a path to victory...

What? You probably didn’t know there was a Republican primary in Nebraska today. Because the race is all over and Donald Trump is going to be the nominee. So it’s academic, right? What difference does it make, right? Not so fast. Maybe Ted Cruz knows something you and I don’t, but he seems to think there’s at least a chance he could somehow come out on top in Nebraska. And if he does? Er . . .

Ted Cruz is leaving the door open to reviving his campaign to challenge Donald Trump for the Republican presidential nomination. “Listen, let’s be very clear: If there is a path to victory, we launched this campaign intending to win,” the Texas senator told conservative radio host Glenn Beck on Tuesday. “The reason we suspended the race last week is with Indiana’s loss I didn’t see a viable path to victory. Some of the Ricketts family in Nebraska spent millions to defeat Donald Trump. Now the most high profile Ricketts is endorsing him. Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts on Friday put his support behind the presumptive Republican presidential nominee while appearing at a rally with him in Omaha, Nebraska. "Politics is run by the people that show up ... By showing up today, you have demonstrated you want to chart a new course for our country," Ricketts told the crowd in his introductory remarks for Trump. He urged them to "get behind our nominee" to prevent likely Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton from...

With Donald Trump now the presumptive Republican nominee, the various #NeverTrump forces are pondering everything Thursday from enlisting first-term Sen. Ben Sasse to avoiding the White House battle altogether. Sasse, a Nebraska Republican, has emerged as a central figure in the movement. He wrote a Facebook post early Thursday arguing for an alternative candidate to Trump and Clinton, which had garnered more than 6,400 likes by late morning. "Why shouldn't America draft an honest leader who will focus on 70% solutions for the next four years? You know ... an adult?" Sasse wrote.

Bing is now projecting that Trump will win the remaining states in which he has primaries by garnering at least 70% of the popular vote. The only exception is Oregon where he is projected to get 65% of the vote. Up until yesterday Trump was projected to lose Nebraska but now he is projected to get 75% of the popular vote.

Nebraska is the next stop on the campaign trail for the GOP candidates. The Nebraska Republican primary will take place May 10 with 36 delegates at stake. The delegates are awarded in winner-take-all fashion with the candidate with the most votes statewide winning all 36 delegates. There have been no early polls taken in Nebraska but this will likely change in the coming days. PredictWise aggregates the betting markets to project primary winners. They give Donald Trump a 71 percent chance of winning the state while Ted Cruz has just a 29 percent chance of pulling off the upset.

Another week gone, another opportunity lost for Donald Trump to pick up Republican National Convention delegates. Nebraska is tailor-made for Ted Cruz, and when the state holds its winner-take-all primary on May 10, party leaders say Trump is an all-but certain loser. Facing those dim prospects, Trump’s best hope in the state may have been to get a few of his supporters on the list of people who will fill those delegate slots — supporters who, in later rounds of voting at a contested convention, would be inclined to abandon Cruz and help Trump. But that’s where the billionaire appears...
