I’m beginning to think the residents of New York deserve every bit of stupid heaped on them by their drooling nimrod politicians. After all, they do keep electing these monkeys into office! The latest bit of stupid comes from New York state senator Tony Avella, who has decided that New York needs to ban machetes. No, I’m not kidding. Get a load at this tool.

The winter's deep freeze has transformed Niagara Falls into an icy spectacle, encasing the trees around it into crystal shells — a sight that's drawing tourists. The Niagara River keeps flowing below the ice cover, so the falls aren't totally frozen over. But the massive ice buildup near the brink has become a tourist magnet for the second straight year after several relatively mild winters. Former House Majority Leader Eric Cantor is hosting a fundraiser for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie next week. Cantor lost his seat last year in a huge upset to former economics professor Dave Brat, who successfully marked Cantor as an out-of-touch member of the “GOP establishment.” He’ll host a meet-and-greet for Christie with big Virginia donors next Thursday at the Jefferson Hotel in Richmond, Va., reports the Associated Press. Christie is considering a 2016 run, but is not currently considered a top contender following weeks of low approval ratings in his home state and in key states, such as Iowa...

Megyn Kelly really grilled Rudy Giuliani on his comments where he said Obama doesn’t love this country. But Giuliani wouldn’t fold, standing firm, even doubling down on why he believes Obama doesn’t love this country.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A grand jury returned an indictment of Sheldon Silver, the former New York State Assembly speaker, for federal corruption charges on Thursday, federal prosecutors said.

Rudy Giuliani went straight for the jugular Wednesday night during a private group dinner here featuring Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker by openly questioning whether President Barack Obama “loves America.” The former New York mayor, speaking in front of the 2016 Republican presidential contender and about 60 right-leaning business executives and conservative media types, directly challenged Obama’s patriotism, discussing what he called weak foreign policy decisions and questionable public remarks when confronting terrorists. “I do not believe, and I know this is a horrible thing to say, but I do not believe that the president loves America,” Giuliani said during the...

In a new report issued Tuesday, scientists painted a picture that could be even more frightening than the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy. Climate change could hit New York with higher temperatures, dramatically rising sea levels, more rainfall and flooding, they said. Temperatures are expected to jump 4.1 to 5.7 degrees by the 2050s — and by the 2080s, it could be 8.8 degrees hotter than the current average of 54 degrees, according to the study by the New York City Panel on Climate Change, a group of leading scientists assembled by the city. By mid-century, the city could get...

Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito with Cesar Pena at the signing of immigration legislation.Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito today tore into a Texan federal judge’s decision to block President Barack Obama’s executive order to shelter undocumented immigrants, and into the 26 right-leaning states that filed the lawsuit to prevent the program from going forward. Judge Andrew Hanen determined late yesterday that the Obama Administration had acted outside its authority by not having a public comment period on its plan to allow as many as five million undocumented immigrants who have resided in the United States for five years to register to avoid...

A federal judge has ruled that New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) has until Friday to set the date for a special election to replace former Rep. Michael Grimm (R-N.Y.), or the court will do it for him. Judge Jack B. Weinstein of the Federal District Court in Brooklyn ruled on Tuesday in favor of a group that sued Cuomo in an attempt to force him to call for the vote in New York’s 11th District. "The right to representation in government is the central pillar of democracy in this country," Weinstein wrote. "Unjustified delay in filling a vacancy cannot...

Two men saved a little boy and his teen sister from a Brooklyn blaze on Monday, scaling scaffolding at a burning apartment building and catching the children as they were dropped from a window by their mother. Davon Flunory, 20, and his friend Kevin Ravenell, 27, leaped into action after spotting Cipriani Lundy and her kids, 4-year-old Julian and 15-year-old Imani, screaming for help in the window of their smoke-filled third-floor apartment in the Eleanor Roosevelt Houses in Bedford-Stuyvesant. “My first instinct is to call the Fire Department,” recalled Flunory, who was visiting a relative in the building when the...

Give New York City Councilman Carlos Menchaca some credit for honesty. Most amnesty shills aren’t quite so open about seeing themselves as fighting for the other side in a war against law-abiding Americans, with illegal aliens as the invasion force that will finally subdue the hated Middle Class forever. The New York Post finds Menchaca crowing about a self-destruct mechanism in a rule that will thwart efforts by those dratted rule-of-law types to use New York’s lovely new ID database to enforce America’s tottering immigration system: Get the shredders ready — the Tea Party could be coming. The city’s new...

RICHMOND — A state report linking Virginia cigarette smuggling to terrorist organizations has prompted a Republican state senator to push a bill that would require retailers and wholesalers to obtain a state license to sell cigarettes. The bill, from Sen. Bryce E. Reeves (R-Spottsylvania), has cleared the Senate, but odds are against it in the GOP-dominated House because of conservative objections to increased government regulations and taxes. Even in the more moderate Senate, eight conservative Republicans voted against it. They are a group that Reeves, a fiscal and social conservative, often votes with. “I think they are concerned about regulatory...

José was looking for peace and quiet, in addition to work, when he decided to settle in the hinterlands of upstate New York 14 years ago. “A lot of farmland and trees,” he recalled, speaking in Spanish. “It reminded me of my village in Mexico.” But he quickly learned that being poor and undocumented and living far from the well-established immigrant networks found in the nation’s big cities made life especially difficult. Such challenges are a fact of life for the large and growing population of immigrants across the country who have bypassed traditional gateway cities like New York and...

President Obama’s pick to serve as the next attorney general is having a hard time finding Republican supporters. To be confirmed by the Senate, Attorney General nominee Loretta Lynch only needs four Republicans to support her nomination. But it is unclear where those votes will come from. Sen. Orrin Hatch (Utah) is the only Republican so far who has signaled his intention to vote for Lynch, though several others have spoken favorably about her. But many Republicans are expressing concerns about Lynch's stance on immigration and what they suggest is a lack of “independence" from the White House. Lynch’s confirmation...

Michael Bloomberg representatives have asked the Aspen Institute not to distribute footage of his recent appearance in Aspen, where the three-term New York City mayor made pointed comments concerning minorities and gun control. Appearing before nearly 400 people in Aspen on Feb. 5, the billionaire founder of Bloomberg L.P. argued that in order to save lives, police should seize guns from male minorities between ages 15 and 25.

Correction: February 15, 2015 An earlier version of this column incorrectly stated that teacher layoffs in Milwaukee in 2010 happened because Gov. Scott Walker “cut state aid to education.” The layoffs were made by the city’s school system because of a budget shortfall, before Mr. Walker took office in 2011.
