County leaders are hopeful that the $1 trillion infrastructure investment promised by Republican president-elect Donald Trump will have a big impact on the region. Trump has promised to prioritize infrastructure spending in his first 100 days in office. The move is one that Democrats, now in minority positions in both houses of Congress, have said they're willing to support. The plan, which is not yet fully fleshed out, looks to rely heavily on billions of dollars of infrastructure tax credits to private entities. And while Federal Reserve Board Chair Janet Yellen warned recently that weighing down the national debt with...

Donald Trump managed to flip some traditionally blue counties in other states but lost in Orange County, a historically conservative stronghold that’s turning bluer. Hillary Clinton snagged 401,577 votes countywide (49 percent), compared to Trump’s 361,121 (44 percent), according to results posted Friday morning. Third-party candidates Gary Johnson, Jill Stein and Gloria Estela combined got 43,293 votes (4 percent). Roughly a third of Orange County ballots remain uncounted, and final results likely are weeks away ...

A Republican Party headquarters in North Carolina was firebombed and a nearby building was vandalized on Saturday night and police were hunting for those responsible on Sunday. The inside of the Orange County Republican Party headquarters in Hillsborough was severely damaged and an adjacent building was marked with spray painted graffiti reading “Nazi Republicans get out of town or else,” The Charlotte Observer reported. “The office itself is a total loss,” state GOP Executive Director Dallas Woodhouse said. “The only thing important to us is that nobody was killed, and they very well could have been.” A bottle of flammable...

Over 15,000 Muslims gathered in the parking lot of Angel Stadium on Monday morning to celebrate Eid al-Adha (the “Sacrifice Feast”), the second of two major Islamic holidays that occurs during the time of the annual hajj pilgrimage. Once again, my math shows one Orange County house costs roughly what three median-priced American homes do. Yes, plenty of real estate affordability benchmarks exist. One I track is a personal concoction that paints a simple picture: the ratio of the median selling prices of existing single-family houses in Orange County to the same measure nationwide, according to the National Association of Realtors. In 2016’s second quarter, Orange County median price was a record high $742,200. That’s the third highest among the 178 markets surveyed by the Realtors group. Nationwide, pricing hit $240,700, also a record. This means local homes...

A large police presence was expected to be on hand in hopes of keeping any possible protests outside of Donald Trump's rally in Anaheim under control Wednesday. Orange County (CA) voters: help defeat Andrew Stein, a liberal candidate for Superior Court Judge. From his FB page: "I am a Democrat, raised in a family of working people and union members. I am a liberal, in that I believe that drug addiction and drug addicts need rehabilitation, as opposed to being warehoused in a cell." What Stein does do not mention (and deletes comments about it) is that he defended a animal abuser in 2011. http://www.ocregister.com/articles/dog-312079-stein-nizato.html If you can, please post comments on his FB page: https://www.facebook.com/AndrewMSteinforsuperiorcourt2016/

Laguna Beach's LSD culture in the 1960s, a cranky widower befriended by his chatty neighbors and a man who's dealing with the fallout from his reality show days are all stories that will be told at the Newport Beach Film Festival this year. It's a chance to see things that likely won't appear elsewhere, especially in the United States. The festival starts this Thursday and runs until the following Thursday. ORANGE – Jim Reeves grew up eating burgers at Watson’s. The 57-year-old, who says his family moved to Orange in 1893 “in a covered wagon ... before Watson’s opened,” says his parents also ate at Watson’s. So did his grandparents. Watson’s, which opened in 1899 as the drugstore in downtown Orange, is one of the county’s oldest businesses. It’s where Tom Hanks filmed part of “That Thing You Do!” It’s also where George W. Bush once stopped in for a malt. In Orange, Watson’s is an icon. Now, that icon and the town around it are about to change. A...
