Early in September, international news was awash with the claim that 87 elephants had been “killed by poachers” in Botswana. The story originated from the NGO Elephants Without Borders, which received massive publicity – and presumably donations – as a result. Even the beleaguered UK Prime Minister tweeted the story, while a petition calling for wildlife guards to be re-armed surpassed 150,000 signatures. I know a little of Botswana. A few years ago, I was declared “public enemy number one”, threatened by a government spokesman on television, and banned from the country. This was because Survival International was instrumental in...

A coalition of lawmakers and civil rights groups has a message for the National Park Service: your uniforms and vehicles are “very threatening” to Latinos. Maite Arce of the Hispanic Access Foundation delivered the “really tough” message during a press conference on Thursday: “It’s such a shame that something as simple as the uniform and it’s similarity to the border patrol’s uniform — in the coloring — could be very threatening to certain segments of the Latino population. So a discussion about that is going to be really tough.” The coalition made multiple recommendations to the Park Service, including: Assess...

700,000 people a day would have been visiting the parks and that the surrounding areas are losing $76 million in visitor spending per day. The park service said it is losing $450,000 per day in revenue from entrance fees and other in-park expenditures, such as campground fees and boat rentals.
  • Have the Park Rangers always been jerks or are they being threatened to be jerks? ~ Vanity

Have the Park Rangers always been jerks or are they being threatened to be jerks or lose their jobs/pensions? I say this because it seems to me that some of them seem to be behaving over the top as if they have been spooked with their jobs/pension or their families have been threatened via NSA collected data. Just a deep feeling that has been building every time I hear a story about the behavior of Park Rangers and a "Feel the Pain Government Shutdown".... Are the Park Rangers acting over the top intentionally as an invitation to media that is...

A semi carrying porta potties pulled up yesterday beside the WW II Memorial in Washington D.C.. The porta potties were donated by private citezens to help out the visiting veterans since the facilities are closed. However, the park rangers turned the truck away and they were not allowed to unload. Michele Tennery witnessed this event and was astonished that the rangers could be so heartless in their treatment of the veterans. Michele added, “The photos show the attempted delivery of Port-A-Johns by Don’s Johns. The NPS Ranger would not allow the Port-A-Johns to be left at the WWII Memorial site...

A few minutes later, the gunman moved several yards from his hiding place and was spotted by Mexican officers, who unleashed a barrage of gunfire from the south side of the border, witnesses said. The gunman died right away, and Eggle died soon after, before an emergency helicopter arrived. American officials said Saturday...
