<p>SAN JOSE -- This time around, Assembly Member Nicole Parra is leaving nothing to chance.</p> <p>The Hanford Democrat is determined to leave this weekend's state Democratic Party convention with an official party blessing for her re-election bid this coming November against Bakersfield Republican Dean Gardner.</p>

<p>There was Assemblywoman Nicole Parra, getting an autograph from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger at a rally in Bakersfield, where he used his bully pulpit to pressure Parra and other Democrats to support his budget plan.</p> <p>Adding irony to the photo that appeared last week in newspapers around the state: Parra is the Republican Party's No. 1 target in next year's Assembly races, based on her slim 266-vote victory in 2002.</p>

<p>Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is striking an especially concilatory tone with one lawmaker this week.</p> <p>After planning a Bakersfield event initially intended to target Assemblywoman Nicole Parra, D-Hanford, who won her seat by a mere 266 votes last year, the governor invited her to ride to the event with him in his private jet, accompanied by local Sen. Roy Ashburn, a Republican.</p>

It's official: Next year's contest to represent the west side of the valley in the state Assembly will be a rerun of last year's battle. The only two candidates who have filed papers to run in the 30th Assembly District are Democratic incumbent Nicole Parra of Hanford and Republican Dean Gardner of Bakersfield. In a four-stop motor home tour of the southern Valley, Gardner vowed to defeat Democrat Nicole Parra, who won the 2002 election with 265 more votes than Gardner.</p>
