Rapid tests causing grief in state with highest vaccination rate. Emergency rooms in Vermont are being overwhelmed with people who have tested positive for COVID but have no symptoms, bolstering the criticism that mass testing amid a pandemic is counterproductive. Vermont, with about 77% of the population vaccinated, has the nation's highest rate.. Vermonters who take the rapid tests and test positive for COVID-19 are "clogging up emergency rooms." Dr. Rick Hildebrant, medical director of the emergency department at the Rutland Regional Medical Center, said people should go to the ER only if they have a positive test and are...

The judge who ordered Pennsylvania to not certify the results of the 2020 election wrote in an opinion on Friday that the Republicans who filed the related lawsuit will likely win the case. Pennsylvania Commonwealth Judge Patricia McCullough made the assessment as part of an opinion explaining her rationale for blocking Pennsylvania’s election certification. A group of Republican lawmakers and candidates sued the Keystone State earlier this week, arguing that the state legislature’s mail-in voting law—Act 77—violated the commonwealth’s constitution. “Petitioners appear to have established a likelihood to succeed on the merits because petitioners have asserted the Constitution does not...

Mark and Patricia McCloskey, the St. Louis couple who garnered national media attention when they aimed guns at Black Lives Matters protesters in June outside their home, warned during their Monday night speech at the first night of the Republican National Convention that Americans would not be safe in a nation run by the "radical Democrats." "The radicals are not content just marching in the streets," Mark McCloskey said. "They want to walk the halls of Congress. They want power. This is Joe Biden’s party. These are the people who will be in charge." The McCloskeys, both personal injury attorneys,...

Imagine the bond formed between coach and player, from mid-May Organized Team Activities workouts through a playoff run through the following January. Then, you hear that coach is being approached by another team. This is another unnecessary distraction inflicted by losing franchises on teams that should be preparing for the chance at a Super Bowl. This happens repeatedly every season as the teams contacting these coaches aren't affected because they weren't good enough to get past December. Should teams be prohibited from contacting coaches for jobs until after the Super Bowl?

...."We were fortunate as to where it made landfall. It was not a densely populated area," said Dennis Feltgen, a meteorologist and spokesman for the U.S. National Hurricane Center. "You and I would be having a very different conversation if this went over the top of Puerto Vallarta." He said the lack of fatalities was probably the result of the storm's narrow footprint. Category 5 winds extended 15 miles out on either side of the eye, and hurricane-force winds extended for 35 miles from the center of the storm. On Saturday, Patricia's maximum sustained winds had dropped to 30 mph...

MEXICO CITY — Patricia, a storm that once carried the strongest hurricane winds ever recorded in the Western Hemisphere, is weakening rapidly as it slogs inland after strafing a lightly populated stretch of Mexico’s Pacific Coast, where it toppled trees, bashed in roofs and swept away cars. Mexico’s president, Enrique Peña Nieto, struck cautiously optimistic notes in an update from a federal emergency center but warned people to stay in shelters as the storm continued to drop heavy volumes of rain and threatened to cause floods and landslides. “With the information we have, and taking into account that the phenomenon...

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico (AP) - Hurricane Patricia roared onshore in southwestern Mexico on Friday evening, bringing lashing rains, surging seas and cyclonic winds with what forecasters called a potential to cause "catastrophic" damage. The storm's center made landfall near Cuixmala, about 55 miles (85 kilometers) west-northwest of the port city of Manzanillo. Record wind speeds measured earlier in the day had fallen off somewhat to 165 mph (270 kph), the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said, but Patricia was still an extremely dangerous Category 5 storm.

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico (AP) -- Hurricane Patricia barreled toward southwestern Mexico Friday as a monster Category 5 storm, the strongest ever in the Western Hemisphere. Locals and tourists were either hunkering down or trying to make last-minute escapes ahead of what forecasters called a "potentially catastrophic landfall" later in the day. The storm was homing in on a Pacific coastline dotted with both sleepy fishing villages and gleaming resorts, including the popular beach city of Puerto Vallarta and the port of Manzanillo. After hitting land, Patricia's projected path would quickly take it over mountainous terrain that's prone to dangerous flash...

With 200-mph sustained winds and even more powerful gusts, Hurricane Patricia was the strongest hurricane ever recorded by the U.S. National Hurricane Center as it bore down Friday on Mexico's Pacific coast. The Miami-based meteorological center, in its 8 a.m. advisory, warned of a "potentially catastrophic landfall in southwestern Mexico" later Friday. While its strength could fluctuate, "Patricia is expected to remain an extremely dangerous Category 5 hurricane through landfall." Patricia has potential to cause massive death and destruction to a large swath of the Mexican Pacific coast, including the tourist hot spots of Puerto Vallarta and Acapulco. Citing observations...

History is being made tonight in the Northeast Pacific as Hurricane Patricia churns about 200 miles off the coast of Mexico, south-southwest of Manzanillo. With its 11 pm EDT Thursday advisory, the National Hurricane Center upgraded Patricia to Category 5, with top sustained winds of 160 mph and a central pressure of 924 millibars. Hurricane warnings are now in effect for the coast from San Blas to Punta San Telmo, including Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo, with a hurricane watch and tropical storm warning eastward to Lazaro Cardenas. AUBURN, NY--A 56-year-old grandmother spent a weekend in the Cayuga County Jail after a doctor made an error on a drug prescription. Defense attorney Charles Thomas said Auburn police charged Patricia Rigdon with possessing a forged prescription on March 11, but it turned out that the prescription called for too many pills because a doctor had made a mistake. Thomas said the felony charge was dismissed Wednesday because of that mistake. Rigdon said a police officer approached her in Kinney Drugs in Auburn while she waited for the pharmacist to fill a prescription for her husband and accused her of...

SAN FRANCISCO - California’s attorney general announced indictments Wednesday against Hewlett-Packard’s ousted chairwoman Patricia Dunn and former ethics lawyer Kevin Hunsaker for their roles in a snowballing boardroom espionage scandal. “In this misguided effort, people inside and outside HP violated privacy rights and broke state law. Those who cross the legal line must be held accountable,” Attorney General Bill Lockyer told reporters. Three private detectives involved in the US computer equipment giant’s alleged spying operations were also indicted, Lockyer said. Dunn and Hunsaker were indicted along with Ronald DeLia, Matthew Depante and Bryan Wagner, Lockyer said at a press conference...

HARTFORD, Conn. - The wife of Connecticut Gov. John G. Rowland has been subpoenaed by federal authorities investigating alleged corruption in her husband's administration, according to published reports. The subpoena requires Patricia Rowland to produce documents or records, but it does not compel her to appear before a grand jury, The Hartford Courant and the New Haven Register reported Saturday. Patricia Rowland's personal attorney, Robert M. Casale, told the Register the subpoena seeks documents relating to gifts she or the governor may have received. When reached by The Associated Press, the governor's chief counsel, Ross Garber, declined comment. The first...
