A record string of daily highs over 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43.3 degrees Celsius) in Phoenix ended Monday as the dangerous heat wave that suffocated the Southwest throughout July receded slightly with cooling monsoon rains. The historic heat began blasting the region in June, stretching from Texas across New Mexico and Arizona and into California’s desert. Phoenix and its suburbs sweltered more and longer than most, with several records including the 31 consecutive days of 110 degrees Fahrenheit-plus (43.4 degrees Celsius) weather. The previous record was 18 straight days, set in 1974. The streak was finally broken Monday, when the high...

The city of Phoenix reached its 31st consecutive day with at least 110-degree heat Sunday, rounding out what many scientists believe will be the Earth’s hottest month on record. Forecasters predict the arrival of thunderstorms late Monday likely will break the record heat on the last day of July; the expected high temperature in the Arizona capital July 31 is 106 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. The previous record for longest 110-degree streak in Phoenix was set in 1974, when it had 18 straight days of heat at or above 110 degrees.

An investigation is underway after a man died while being detained by officers in north Phoenix on Thursday. Around 2 p.m., officers were called out to check on a man at a shopping plaza near 19th Avenue and Union Hills Drive. Police arrived and tried to talk to the man, but he began to walk away from them. Police say that officers continued watching the man and saw him fall into a landscaping wall. Officers detained the man and called Phoenix firefighters for assistance. Phoenix is slated to break its heat record as the city approaches its 19th consecutive day of hitting 110 degrees or hotter in the area. Phoenix also broke its record for the highest overnight low temperature ever on Monday with a low of 95 degrees, which surpassed the 2009 record of 93 degrees. It was the eighth consecutive day of...

The city of Phoenix, Arizona, is being sued by more than a dozen people who live and work near the largest homeless camp in the state over its “failure to address, and its exacerbation of the growing homelessness crisis within the city.” They argued that the city does not offer shelter or resources to those who are homeless and does not enforce “quality of life ordinances” that forbid activities like loitering, intoxicated behavior, and drug use. A Phoenix woman was found dead along a hiking trail — and police believe foul play may have been involved and have released a video of a person of interest spotted running near the scene. Lauren Heike, 29, was found on Saturday at around 10:30 a.m. along the trail on 6500 East Libby Street near her home, nearly 24 hours after she went out, police said. Phoenix officers originally received a call about an injured person spotted on the trail, but it was confirmed to be Heike’s body, which appeared to have suffered “trauma.” Phoenix Homicide Lt. Whether you love or hate football, this is outrageous. ... Nearly 100 million people will watch this year’s Super Bowl in Phoenix, Arizona. But most viewers will never know about a disturbing bit of backstory to this year’s event—how the NFL tried to collude with a local government to attack free speech. A Phoenix city ordinance, likely lobbied for by the league, would have required local property owners to get the NFL’s approval for any advertisement they wanted to put up on properties in the downtown area. According to the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), the city dubbed...

A leak in a fuel pipeline facility in California forced a shutdown of deliveries of gasoline and diesel from the Los Angeles area east to areas including Las Vegas and Phoenix, but officials said Friday they believed supplies would not immediately be affected. Pipeline operator Kinder Morgan told The Associated Press the leak was discovered Thursday afternoon at a company station near Los Angeles and that its CALNEV and SFPP West pipelines were shut down while the Houston-based pipeline operator worked to resolve the issue. It did not say how much fuel leaked or when service would be restored. The...

Among the travelers heading home for the holidays at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport are people escaping violence, poverty and persecution. Now, they're catching a new flight to possibly start a new life. The number of people illegally crossing the southern border into Arizona continues to grow, and many of them are being bused daily to the Phoenix airport, where they are then sent to destinations across the country. Airport officials say they see between 200 and 300 migrants every day, dropped off by the busload from border officials or NGOs from Yuma. One man who traveled from Cuba is hoping...
