The trio fled when they were seen, and during their escape, ran into a breeding herd of elephants, authorities said.

The Kenya Wildlife Service was called to the reserve after it was reported the giraffes hadn’t been seen in quite a while. Upon finding the bones, wildlife officials estimated they had been there for at least four months. “This is a very sad day for the community of Ijara and Kenya as a whole. We are the only community in the world who are custodians of the white giraffes,” said Mohammed Ahmednoor, manager of the reserve in Garissa County, Kenya, in a news release. The animals got their unique coloring from a condition known as leucism, which is a genetic...

Head of beloved deer was found in defendant's freezer. The man who admitted killing Harris County Precinct 3's beloved tame deer known as “Mr. Buck” was sentenced to 18 months in state jail today. Brandon Eugene Gregory, 24, had pleaded guilty last August to a felony charge of taking a wildlife resource without landowner consent. The November 2008 killing and mutilation of Mr. Buck shocked animal lovers across the Houston area. The 8- to 10-point buck, which lived at Bear Creek Pioneers Park's wildlife sanctuary, was comfortable around people and let park visitors scratch his chin. Gregory told investigators he...

MIAMI (Reuters) - A Florida diver shot a large grouper with a spear gun then apparently drowned when the fish sped into a hole, entangling the man in the line attached to the spear, investigators said on Monday. The 42-year-old man, whose name was withheld, was free-diving in about 25 feet (7.5 metres) of water off the lower Florida Keys on Saturday and speared a Goliath Grouper, Monroe County Sheriff's Detective Mark Coleman said. "It looks like the fish wrapped the line attached to the spear around the victim's wrist. The fish then went into a hole in a coral...

VANCOUVER (CP) - A flash of white feathers lured Julie Bryson-McElwee's dog into the bush. She followed when he didn't come back. A dead bald eagle lay on the forest floor. Lunging to keep her pet away from the carcass, Bryson-McElwee stumbled on Wednesday across a shallow grave, piled with 14 of the protected species. The legs and tail feathers had been cut off, possibly for sale on the black market. "It's just sickening," Bryson-McElwee said in a telephone interview on Thursday. "Whoever did this had a real operation going, there were garbage bags all around the grave and in...
